The proper order to play the games is 1->2->3.

That's both the chronological release order and story order of the universes. If you play Mother 2 (Earthbound) without playing Mother 1 first, you won't understand Giygas quite as much: his motivations and all that. Of course, Earthbound is cleverly designed to make that not matter, but it really does enhance the story.

>> No.6952742

Basically. He was told by the prophecy machine (apple of enlightenment) that he'd lose in his return invasion to dumb kids again. One of the dumb kids looked exactly like ninten as well
So he kept increasing his power, but he kept getting the same prophecy, so he kept increasing his power and so on. The more power he attained, the less stable he was. At a certain point he was psychically powerful enough to the point of creating his own dark universe, but also physically weak enough that the emotions of love and guilt literally could kill him. It was a self fulfilling prophecy in the end, of course.

>> No.6953150

>>6953023
i always thought the increasing power was due to the trauma.

>> No.6953272

>>6953150
I don't think so. I think the devil's machine was designed to both increase and contain his power: maybe just the latter.

In Mother 1, he's already in a machine of some sort and already his attacks are incomprehensible. I think the "devil's machine" in Mother 2 is just that machine but expanded as the need for containment grew. I can't prove that though, but in Mother 1 he already looked too frail to ever leave the fluid he was in.

The trauma killed him. Or, at least, remembering the guilt of Mother 1 events alongside Maria's love did. No matter how powerful he became, he couldn't escape an emotional vulnerability after all.

>> No.6953476

>>6953272
im not sure about that. in 1 he seemed mostly normal, as he started off OP before the transformation. but by 2 hes on a whole other level and the devil's machine is something entirely different than what we saw in 1. im pretty sure the devils machine wasnt really containing his body, but more of containing what he turned into.

>> No.6953484

>>6953476
The devil's machine has many layers (as can be seen with the machine 'opens' to show his thoughts, which are entirely about Ness). I don't think it's too out there they built atop that core he was in in M1, but I admit there's no proof of it.
I do think his original body was gone either way, I'm not debating that, I'm just saying they built around it rather then made a new thing to stuff him in.

>> No.6953515

>>6953484
perhaps. although, i dont think it was ever stated that he increased his power himself. given what he turned into, im not entirely sure thats even possible. either way, the idea that intense trauma can cause a once powerful psychic to turn into whatever the fuck he was is one of the more grim fates ive seen in video games.

>> No.6953878

>>6953515
I really don't think the GIygas we see in Mother 2 is the same or weaker than in Mother 1. He's more vulnerable to human emotions, his weakness in Mother 1 (guilt making him leave). However, he makes his own dimension of horror in Mother 2.

I guess one thing to consider is what is the nature of Giygas's trauma? Losing Maria, who presumably died or otherwise went into some sort of psychic shock. I believe he was, or at least felt, responsible for it. He remembered her love in Mother 1 with the song the protagonists sang, but it also reminded him of his guilt.
One crucial thing to note is that in Mother 1 he offers to save Ninten, and only Ninten, from the fate he'd inflict on the humans. If Ninten agreed he probably would've felt less guilty. That was his goal.

I don't think he stewed over guilt in Mother 2, at least as a primary motivator. I think it was more likely he felt humiliated to have been 'defeated' by human emotion. That's how I think he saw himself. As such, I think he turned to a self-fulfilling prophecy and grew in power.

>> No.6953898

>>6953878
I didn't mean to imply that he was weaker. Quite the opposite. The way I saw it is that the intensity of the trauma coupled with how much power he already had triggers some kind of growth in power, at the expense of his physical form.

personally, I just played it because it was convenient for me. I already played through Mother 2 on SFC a number of times, so I just played it on M1+2 just for the sake of it being different (even if a downgrade). I know I could emulate it if I wanted to play it on a handheld, but fuck it, I own the cart, might as well use it instead of letting it sit without ever touching it.
Funnily enough, since I could play it on my Micro and carry it everywhere when I was playing it, I actually got a 100% file (or very close to it, at least) on it, I actually went and grinded for every 1/128 equipable item. Spent a lot of hours looking for the magic frypan and the gutsy bat. It was pretty nice to just play in short bursts of 10 or 20 minutes here and there.
There's also some glitches exclusive to this port, like you can actually beat Gyiyg without praying, but I dunno, never tried that.

I think fans overestimate the cut content. The 64DD version was too ambitious and set to have 12 chapters, but by near the end of development when after development refocused to cartridge, the chapter count dropped to 7~9. So the final N64 version was most likely going to look extremely similar to the GBA version's 8 chapters. If I were to speculate, I'd even say the bulk of the trimming was due to streamlining most of the Needle subplot into the long Chapter 7 (note that the middle four can be pulled nonlinearly, which may hint they were drastically condensed from their own dedicated chapters). And ironically, the GBA version most likely resembles how the shortlived SNES version was going to look like.

That's not what's being said there; what's being said is that, the way the game was shaping up on N64 cartridge (as in the state of the N64 game near the end of its development, i.e. had it been released) is extremely similar to the plot of the GBA version. Yes, everyone knows about the evidence of a different endgame/alternate ending involving final boss presentation and possibly Porky's fate, but this ultimately doesn't majorly affect the outline of events.

>> No.6965427

>>6965380
im not talking about that. there was at least one other script that was changed by the time of 3s release due to both changes in development. screenshots of some of the earliest N64 prototypes reflect this. you are thinking of the cut content from the GBA version, whereas what everyone else is referring to is something different entirely.

The N64 cartridge version that would have released in 2000 wouldn't have been terribly different plotstructure-wise is the point - it's everyone else that boils down the early/mid 12-chapter/64DD periods of development as if it's one "EarthBound 64", and even then, the story had the biggest changes during the game's pre-planning stages for SNES, which we know the least about and probably would have visualy resembled the GBA version the most, going full circle. Sure, we don't know how much reported lost 64DD content was actually implemented in the last N64 build, but I suspect that it'd be just as disappointing as Ura Zelda/Ocarina of Time's Master Quest.

What's with the enemies?

Was it PSI crazing people, animals and animating cars, trucks and bathroom signs?

>> No.6974471

it was giygas. he wasn influencing people and things in 1, so id imagine it would get crazier in 2 when hes just an incomprehensibly powerful entity with little control over his actions.

>> No.6974561

>>6974401
In mother 1, I figured that most enemies were
>humans and animals driven crazy by alien psychic resonance.
>inanimate objects brought to life by same psychic force.
>zombies and ghosts brought to life, by again ‐ psychic resonance.
>actual invasion force of aliens and robots
>magicant enemies, all of which are psychic constructs of Mary/Maria's.

I honestly really like how Mother 1 is generally devoid of totally off-the-wall enemies and creatures outside the explicitly not-real Magicant. I think it aids the general atmosphere of the game of kids off in the woods, getting caught up in spooky alien mysteries and 50's pulp scifi adventures.

Mother 1 kind of feels like a Bradbury story. Or Stand By Me intersecting with The Goonies and The X-Files with a dash of heavily toned-down Japanese Weirdness and their perception of America.

>> No.6974885

>>6974561
i have a theory on why the enemies got crazier in 2. since giegue was controlling them in 1, they were fairly sane. his PSI could control objects and people, without overwhelming them. but in 2, since he became a monstrous entity with little control over his power and his PSI was far more powerful, the things he controlled and people he influenced became more corrupted and warped like giygas was.
