Video gay here. I got a proposal for when the Blood project is finished and everything is wrapped up.

I'm kicking around the idea of starting a mapping contest, something relatively small, like 100$ in prizes total, first place would get 50 bucks, second and third 30-20 each.
Sounds good enough incentive without super high stakes, honestly I don't have Ikea money like Joel and I wouldn't want to spend a whole year reviewing entries either, so I would like the scope of the contest to remain relatively small if possible well I'm not a bigwig in this space so that would be unlikely anyways but it would be open for anyone to join outside of this thread.

If I go though with this I think it would be neat to have more than one judge, people who know their shit and are reasonably skilled at the game I'm not doing UVfast on Sunlust any time soon, I was thinking of other YT folks off the top of my head, Mtpain27 sounds like a good pick since I enjoy his WAD critiques a lot, maybe Decino or Dwars but assuming they are interested/not busy with their own stuff that might defeat the purpose of a smaller contest, if you guys know some people who would make good judges in forums or somewhere else let me know, I'm not super familiar with the wider community in Doomworld/ZDoom/Doomer Boards, and I only ever interacted directly with a handful of modders in the past, and again, they might be too busy with their own stuff.

Assuming everyhing goes well, I would love to try this with other games in the future, who knows? maybe HUH 2 could be contest, maybe we could foment some love for Thief FMs this way, maybe even a writing contest, again, I'm not a wealthy man, far from it, but I'm passionate about this shit and I think it would be neat to reward people for doing it.

Before I get too carried away, this could be more than I could chew from the organizer standpoint, I want to think I learned from HUH.

Unfortunately there's not much about the singleplayer version of the game, the video is mostly focused on the multiplayer version and the general history of the game's development.
As far as I understand the singleplayer version was scrapped very early. There were two versions of the multiplayer game, one which was linked in the video's description and is almost finished and a newer unfinished version made on Lithtech since the studio lost the rights to use the previous engine. The part about the lost drives you asked about referred to the unfinished Lithtech version being lost. The only information about the singleplayer games are the magazine articles giving a few screens and a brief description of the game which mostly amounts to "it's a new Warhammer 40k game".

I was okay with her death. - HUH2 has been in the air for 2-3 months now. I've done basic preparation, but I'd still feel like I'm cheating. what's to stop someone from submitting a map 5 years in the works?
- HUH and QUMP were full of first timers. the idea of competing in the same weight class as guru mappers might sour the affair. as well as the prospect of being ranked, in general.
- as much as level design is a universal language, just dropping Doom judges into Quake maps may not be the best idea. I assume there are reasons for them preferring Doom after all. could be an entertaining shitshow though.

that's assuming Quake anyway. same thing for Doom could work.
anyway, maybe try contacting the Prey guy. it may just solve all of these in one go (clear niche theme to prevent cheating, prior disinterest from gurus letting others have a go, and possibly a judge packaged in). still, mapping for someone else's idea and judgement instead of your own might tank the motivation.

As long as there aren't copyrighted assets, no. Copyrighted assets in this case includes shit like editing official sprites though, you can't make an imp edit and include that in your wad since the original imp design is owned by the copyright holder. If you just use vanilla assets or assets entirely of your own creation (or both) there's zilch stopping you from selling your wad, since the assets copyrighted from DOOM aren't contained within your PWAD but within the IWAD instead (which is why you can run it with Freedoom and still make it fully playable).
The much bigger hurdle is justifying why anyboy would buy your wad when so many fantastic wads are available for free. Selling wads was commonplace in the mid-'90s, you're not going to find much of an audience now though.

Oh I remember that contest, kinda sucks that it didnt draw much attention, maybe that was a problem of too little marketing? Maybe me actively trying to keep a mapping contest small might end up in it not drawing much attention at all when the subject is niche to begin with.


As for the other concerns for a second HUH, if I do that I'll get some of the Quake people for judges, they are a pretty affable bunch and they were really helpful last year, I'm sure some of the regulars would be happy to participate in that way.
I mean, I doubt Sock would join a 50$ mapping contest anyways, but if he or someone else of his caliber shows interest they could be persuaded to be judges.


As for people using pre baked stuff... there isnt much you can do about it besides having a theme like you said "no more than x number of units/brushes" "the map has to be in ancient egypt" or something on that line, I believe limitation can actually help creativity assuming you play your cads right and let people have enough wiggle room to come up with cool stuff.
I'll try getting a hold of guy tho.

But yeah the first one would be Doom and it would involve only Doom people.
Honestly the biggest drawback I can think of is trying to set up something like a Discord to act as a hub for the event, and the prospect of moderating it all sounds dreadful.

I personally don't even have a big issue with Sam in particular, but the pushback is because of what's happened to the rest of the board; this thread has remained the same despite the change and people are worried about it slipping into the same realm of despair /vr/ as a whole has become. Find a tutorial on voodoo doll scripting. That's used more often in Boom mapping than any feature you'll see in boomedit. That being said, you will stand out if you can use a rarely used Boom feature and use it well, so it is still worth checking out Boomedit. I've never seen wind or currents in a modern Boom WAD for example.

They're cartoonish, but in a grungy, painted style. One look at the textures can tell you that- they're stylized, but extremely high contrast and detailed for the resolution available, whether it's the greebling on Visor's cybernetics or the cellulite on Lucy's ass. Individual pixel-pushing fills out small patterns and details when needed. Tendons and musculature are raised without losing the realistic texture of flesh and bone. The difference is that upscales like >>6940964 give everything a painterly look and lose a lot of the texture the originals had- individual pixels intended to be used as dithering or details are meshed together as a colored gradient and everything is given broad brush strokes regardless of size or importance, then a generic unsharp mask filter is applied on top.

Also, the player skins were largely Kenneth Scott's doing, IIRC (https://www.bluesnews.com/screenshots/q3a/apr26/q3ashots.shtml).). Adrian and Kevin Cloud were primarily in charge of menu and level assets, while Paul Steed was modeling characters and Kenneth gave them their deliciously grody skins. Scott also shows up in the credits for Daikatana under additional art- the menu and HUD are dead giveaways for his style or someone real good at imitating it.

also i went on to pass the original tga sized texture on IEU, and is interesting how many different models treats her back metallic shit and the bloody arms.

the Fatality and Faces model keeps in line with what kenneth would do with modern tools, but the flesh and blood in her arms becomes more gory

Correct. I upscaled it 100% with nearest neighbor (no filtering) because it's miniscule to try to see the details in otherwise.

Also i went on to use fatality for Q2 because looking at what i did using Gigapixel in the past, the textures became less sharp, and less colorful for some monsters, plus the fact that i had to compress them to 2x size after the upscaling to save memory for many people.

i kinda wish there it was a downscaling model that keeps all the detail with no blurry compression or loss of contrast and sharpening
