If you contend that video games don't age, what do you call it when you can't enjoy something as well as when you didn't know any better?

Surpassed? Outdated? Primitive?

They'd probably say that the games didn't age, they did. In reality, everything ages.

I mean I hate admitting games age too because I've had to argue with people who can't see that I still enjoy a game they claim "aged badly" but it's just an ugly reality from where I sit.

I don't know how serious these people are who are RRRRRRREEEEing about Mario 64 but it does give off a whiff that later games in the genre did what it does better.

So you admit you have the hands and reflexes of an old man and you need modern gaming accommodations like full-360 degree analog camera control and weapon wheels because older games with their simple digital cameras/look modes and pause-based weapon selection no longer feel right to play?

They "see" it, they're just baiting you.
>I don't know how serious these people are who are RRRRRRREEEEing about Mario 64
It's the classic "(popular, well-loved game) = shit" bait, and it works every time.
>but it does give off a whiff that later games in the genre did what it does better
I don't think it does, considering the same people use the same bait with every other popular modern game. The more popular a thing is, the more contrarian shitposters will flock to it to bait (You)s. /vr/ has never been different from /v/ in that regard, it's just that instead of seeing it about Souls games, BoTW, Odyssey, DotA 2, Overwatch, Fortnite; we get it with SM64, FF7, OoT, MGS, Thief, etc.

>>6929534
Sounds like you're just playing shit games, anon. Medal of Honor on the PS1 has a proper "modern" two stick analog control scheme.

I never stopped enjoying games that I liked as a kid.
Maybe I had an above average critical mind when I was a kid, I don't know, but I could always tell when bad games were bad. They were bad back then and they're bad today.
Limitations don't make games bad, bad design do. And bad design is independent of technology or trends or whatever.

>Limitations don't make games bad
They can. As a kid, it was easy to give Goldeneye and Perfect Dark a pass for running at a silky smooth 8-12fps because they looked so impressive, but the gameplay felt like shit and the control scheme was terrible don't give me that shit about the dual controller setup, nobody used that. Play them at 60fps with a mouse and keyboard and suddenly they hold up remarkably well, free of the technical limitations that ruined what is otherwise incredible gameplay.

I've never really had an issue with playing old games for the first time because it lacks some user-friendly features of modern games or anything of that sort. Provided the mechanics of the game were alright to begin with, I recently tried to play some tomb raider game on the Dreamcast and the controls were so shite I dropped it pretty quickly but that's not necessarily due to it being a product of it's time.

That analogy doesn't work. Give some 10 year old a virtual boy and they'll tell you it "feels old and sucks" and then go back to playing their switch. I'm one of those people, OP, and even without calling it aged you're still making the same bad argument anyway. You don't "know better" now, you're just spoiled by modern conveniences. I always use the analogy of film criticism: what film critic in their right mind would hold a black and white movie's lack of color against it? That's not a valid knock against the product, it's just a limitation of when it was made. So it is with early 3d platformers will less than perfect cameras or trends like backtracking and collecting that aren't as in vogue as they were then.

I think Homeworld is better than Homeworld 2 even though mechanically one has certainly "improved" on the original, but its not a huge deal since sometimes older games have mechanics that are so much more suited for them and the levels were designed for them. Think Rayman versus Rayman 2, drastically different games, but they're both still very playable because of their game play. You can argue that Rayman 2 or 3 were the peak of the series, but that's in regards to them being 3D platformers as opposed to the 2D original.

Burnout. I played shit like Banjo so much becuase there was nothing I knew of that scratched the same itch as a kid. Now I've played Banjo too, I've reach Banjo capacity. And I can't get the same thrill out of new or old games like Banjo becuase I already drank so much from the Banjo well there isn't a thrist for it in me anymore. When we say we want more Banjo kinda games, we unfortunately mean we want that first taste of Banjo games again, but we can never get that, we can only get more of what we already had our fill of.

Replace Banjo with anything else peoole claim are only liked becuase of nostalgia.
