Yo /vr/, I've come across with Dragon Warrior III and Shining Force recently, and I was wondering if there are other RPG games that allow you to customize your own party or allow you to pick characters to make your party.

I know the first FF was like this, but it would be nice to get other recommendations.

The majority of RPGs on the NES let you do this. It was actually rarer for a NES RPG to use set characters.

Dragon Quest 6, 7, and 9 also have class systems.
Final Fantasy 3, 5, and Tactics
Ultima 3 (not sure about the games after it, though)
Bard's Tale (though you'll probably just make a party with one of every class)

Thanks. I'll be sure to check those.

SaGa series in general is big on party customization.

Question on DQ.

Just beat Dragon Quest V and the extra content after such amazing ending is awfully weak (fuck that unlocked rigged to hell T'n'T board) compared to IV. So is it worth it to finish off the Zenithian trilogy with VI or should I cool off on something else?

If you really like building characters you should try some western CRPGs. I'm having a blast with good ol' Exile: Escape from the Pit over in the mac games thread.

it appears to be some sort of weiner

Played the recent remake of the remake of Exile. So bummed out that character building went out the window in favor of flavourless and many fucking useless perks.

Really, they streamlined it that much?

I didn't even like Avernum, the graphics change just sucked all the charm out of it. Navigating the isometric perspective feels clunky and obscured, and it's like I'm far away from my characters viewing at a distance rather than being in the middle of everything. Plus everything is so muted compared to the nice vibrant colors of the original.

Pokemon and Dragon Warrior Monsters are an extreme of this.

I grew up with Avernum and there's so much wrong that I almost not opted not to play when I first found out there is no open/close door function if it wasn't for the Avernum Remix mod on the forums.

Nearly all the perks are "3/5/6% bonus to blahblah" and they are all shit comparable to the +1 stat boosting perks. Perks don't belong in this game unless they give unique character building specialization instead of numbers. For example, summons are now down to single summon maximum per caster and there happens to be a summoning perk that adds strengthen the summons (still worthless) and I believe that the summoning perk should have been able increase the maximum number of summons if someone really opted to play like a character straight from Geneforge, but alas, Jeff's creativity remains dead.

You want WRPGs. Lots and lots of WRPGs.

The Shin Megami Tensei games generally have you construct a party primarily of various demons you recruit throughout the game, although because they don't level up, you have to either release them and recruit new ones, or fuse your current ones to create more powerful ones, so you don't always have the most "choice" in your party makeup in the sense that you can't feasibly tackle the entire game with Pixie in your party. I think the later games get a little more lenient on this though.

FF Tactics and Ogre Battle, as well as their sequels/successors mostly let you create an army of generic dudes, as do most Nippon Ichi tactical RPG games. In fact, most tactical RPGs that aren't Super Robot Wars or Fire Emblem let you custom build a team of generic guys.

Chrono Trigger has you recruit up to 7 party members throughout the adventure, letting you take three along at any given time. Final Fantasy 6 does the same thing on a grander scale, with something like 14 permanent characters by the end to pick a party of 4 from. More restrictively (but fostering greater replay value) Seiken Densetsu 3 has six party members, and at the beginning of each game you pick 3 to compose your party for the whole game.

Which SMT introduced demon leveling? I know that Strange Journey had it, but not the others.

Either 2, If..., or 3. I presume 3, but I can't say for sure.

>> No.695457

Each game in the Suikoden series has you recruit up to 108 Characters for your army, of which about 60-70 are usable in battles. S3 introduced a skill system that also allowed for added customization.
