This, to me, has always been the biggest problem. People love to cite concepts like the social contract, but that concept is completely meaningless if you can't choose to opt out of it. Every square inch of land is owned by some government, and simply living on that land is enough for them to demand you pay them rent (property tax) to stay there. It's completely fucked. Back when philosophers were discussing social contracts and other similar concepts, it was actually possible to just fuck off to some unclaimed land and make your own life outside of the protections or rule of any government, so it made perfect sense that in order to live within a government-protected society you should be expected to uphold certain requirements, because it was a CHOICE. But now it's just totally fucked because no matter where you go you have to pay to exist even if you're just a totally off-the-grid subsistence farmer or some shit. Oh, you're completely self-sufficient living out in the woods with no need of anyone else for the rest of your life?
