Here's a port of Super Mario Bros on the Super Cassette Vision, a short-lived Famicom competitor.

I thought this was some kind of rare companion to SMB Special that I somehow never knew about, so I was surprised to see that it has accurate physics and scrolling. This is impressive.

It's such a close port (even with Warp Zone!) that if it wasn't for the parts where he can backtrack (which I don't think the NES version could) I would've thought it was a straight up recompilation

I tried an Atari 2600 Super Mario Bros before and just walked through glitching enemies.

Maybe it was the emulator or a bad rom, as I've seen some Atari roms that worked better than others.

Looked neat though.

I have never seen a Westerner with a Super Cassette Vision. I have seen a guy who owned a PC-FX, a Casio PV-1000, and loads of Japanese computers, but never SCV.

the SCV is such a unique, interesting case, barely anyone knows it even existed, yet it has many of the first anime games ever made

>> No.6927686

It wasn't a success because like the Atari 7800 it was only really good at single screen games with lots of sprites. Also it had a mere 128 bytes of RAM and an OC donut steal NEC CPU.

yeah i managed to find a working bios and it works
now i only have to hope someone will make a versiob that runs on the switch, or i will actually have to figure out how to boot mess games through the mame core.

maybe i should pester m4xw about porting it to libretro on the switch. after all the "dolphin wen" and "citra wen" he gets on a daily basis, i bet he does not expect a "super cassette vision wen".

it doesn't hurt to ask. apparently everything is in here
https://github.com/tautologico/common-src-project
but it's set up like an archive for multiple emulators. I also don't believe the owner of the repo is the same as the author for the emulator.

I'm honestly still not that impressed with it. There's absolutely no sign of any kind of Enemy AI. He's just showing he can move sprites around the screen fast, but he's yet to throw anything that might be taxing on the CPU at it such as unique enemy AI, homing weapons, etc.

If you pay attention, all his bosses just mindlessly move back and forth firing attacks in the same directions. All the normal enemies just walk in the same direction doing the exact same animation frame in sync with each other. They don't do anything unique or any kind of interesting AI. I'd be more impressed if I saw it starting to implement that.

But he's been working on it for the better part of a decade now. It still seems to be in the same state it was years ago when it started as an attempt to recreate Gunstar Heroes. All that's happened is he's swapped the graphics out.
