I wish this was true for DM2, it was actually my favorite game as a little kid, but it was incredibly short and I've never felt like replaying it ever again.

Anyway, I think that RoA: Shadows over Riva wins this for me. I still have to get around to play Star Trail, I've missed out on that one and it's supposedly even better.

Yeah, true, especially compared to the beast that was the first game. I do like that it's short though, it encourages me to pick it up again. Captive is, well... that game basically doesn't end.

Don't the RoA games have third person turnbased style combat? That always turned me off of them.

The first game wasn't very long either, but DM2 felt like maybe half of that. Couldn't have been more that about 8 hours of gameplay for sure.
>Don't the RoA games have third person turnbased style combat? That always turned me off of them.
Yes they do, and I like them for that, among other things. It just feels so much more interesting and strategical than the standard dungeoncrawler turn-based approach a la World of Xeen.

And speaking of Captive, I'm on the second base right now and I believe I got stuck right near the end, by the cores I'm supposed to blow up. The trouble is, I stepped on some switch that barricaded the way I got in there. I'm playing the PC version; is this one of those "unwinnable" bugs I've been hearing about or have I just plain fucked up somewhere on the way?

They're not mandatory, and you can skip them, or go back when you're high enough level to steamroll everything there.
Wiz 8 might have one "strongest" build per class, but it at least allows you to experiment, which is more than can be said about almost any other RPG really.

Which one do you want to know about, DM or LoG?

DM has a free class system, everybody can be good in everything. There are four classes (Fighter, Ninja, Priest, Wizard) and you can have any number of them at once, each one levels up individually.
LoG has fixed classes per character and you get 4 skill points per level to distribute into ~7 skills, the choice of which again is hardset per class.

Both utilize a spell system based on combining runes, but in LoG you have a single table of 9 runes that you combine, whereas in DM there are four tables, and you only pick one per table for a spell. The spells always have at least two components, but not necessarily more - the first table determines strength of the spell, and the other three the specific spell you want to cast.

Oh, and the alchemy system is different too - in LoG any character can mix potions, and you need ingredients to do this; in DM, potion making is a priest specialty, to make a potion he must cast a potion spell (requires mana, no ingredients) while he has an empty flask in hand.

I think it's because of the engine. Similar stuff happens in Ultima Underworld and Daggerfall. I believe I heard somewhere that it's because the raycast engines they use utilize only 256 degrees/directions instead of 360, to be more power efficent.

Can't you just draw on your smartphone or tablet? Use any painting application and draw lines for corridors, with easy marks for obstacles, like / for a door, \ for a pit or some such: - for a closed door, several lines for ladders etc.
