So far they've fixed up a ton of the unity ports issues, but they still need to:

Add fullscreen with minimized status bar, pushing ammo and health count to the sides of the screen and getting rid of the keyboard number display. This means we can actually see the bottom portions of the weapon sprites.

Ask Perkistan if they can use his high quality doom sound effects pack. REKKR definitely uses 44.1 khz audio for it's sounds, so their engine supports it, and having crispier sounds in the vanilla game is a very baseline bit of literal remastering.

Fix the Unity main menu sticking around after quickloading from death. You'll end up hearing doomguy UNF in the background while you're just movie around. You can also inadvertently save or start a new game when the menu is in this zombie state.

Fix Switch's HD rumble getting stuck after firing and quick saving/loading.

Add Boom/MDF support for more Vanilla+ modding support. Don't think we can ever get GZDoom stuff to be honest.

Change vanilla behavior such that pressing a button after death loads the last saved game with the current wad loaded, instead of just pistol starting the level.

Add more save slots and have them be more easily differentiated between different WADS. I've got saves going for both Back to Saturn episodes and now REKKR.

That and Make Doom 1 & 2 into a single combined game


Also... Did Terminus Sample one of the Halo games for an enemy attack in REKKR? I swear, one of the attacks sounds like when a Flood infected form does a melee attack. I wonder if Bethesda getting bought out by MS lets them get away with using those samples.

Boom support is really I think the last thing the Unity port needs to support the rest of the vanillaish projects. ZScripting would require far more work and probably be a bad idea as long as they're supporting the Switch.

As an aside, I really hope Fabian's work on Woof eventually leads to Boom support coming to Crispy.

Been on a Build game marathon lately. Currently playing through Shadow Warrior. Some of the levels are pretty gnarly. Level 8 and 10 have secret-tier locations of key objects in order to progress. They were the only two levels I actually had to look up how to complete since I couldn't figure it out.

Anyone else here play the Build games? So far I'd rate them as:

im still surprised seeing how good the old Quake 2 maps are.
Azure mines is short with 2 maps but is good, the enemies doesn't fuck around, the map are simple in modern terms, like speedmaps but they feel good.

Also, playing with these old maps using the hd pack kinda confirms what carmack said once during an early quakecon tech talk, that Quake 2 idtech 2 was made with Higher resolution textures in mind, but hardware by the time when the game was released was still limited.

Okay, so I have this cancerous idea, I'm not going to implement it so I'll throw it here. I mean, ideas are dime a dozen, and I give it away for free, so you still going to turn profit if you take it.

Roguelite maps! So, you make a UDMF map that is a lots of disjointed arenas, each with 4 doorframes (1 in every direction) and a set of randomly picked encounters (you come in, doors are locked, you kill everything, door opens up). Also some rooms with traps, and some with randomly generated power-ups. And lots of corridor pieces. Each time a player enters such a map, it randomly generates a level by connecting rooms with Line_SetPortalTarget into a complete level, based on some algorithm (you can look up how actual roguelites do this). Then you just slap some gameplay mod such as DoomRLA and Colorful Hell on top of it, and bam - the game is now a shit.

Reminds me of the dungeon crawler idea I still havent gotten off my ass to make assets for: Basically you walk/turn/etc with set movement in a grid style system, with a counter for random encounters. when it tops off, you get teleported to an arena with normal physics where you face a random set of enemies tailored to the floor/area you're in. there is also a slowly lowering elevator that works as a "flee" option, but you have to dodge enemies until its low enough. meanwhile, during the "normal" exploration, there are various traps/chests/etc that have scripted encounters, equipment, or inventory items.
Probably shouldn't post it here since I do plan to do it someday, but whatever, I might never get around to it. :)

Being a purist is all well and good, thats how you want to experience the game more power to ya. Just saying the slope isn't as slippery as you might think it is. After all, Strife and the Raven games made some improvements like the inventory system, enemies having multiple attacks to choose from, etc while still still adhering (or only slowly starting to stray from, in hexen's case) to the basic rules.
Personally I'm glad we have so many optional ways to play such an old game.

Yes, but it's a single player game so do what you want. I usually play wads the way they were designed first before turning on the crazy shit. Looking up and down isn't really doom to me, especially in gzdoom where the various control differences make it a very different feeling game. That's fine though, if you're playing a wad that requires those features though.

Classic Doom still had actual upside down crosses and came in the right era to be a game about Hell
New Doom changes those crosses and writes some fantasy/science fiction lore that deviates from the original setting even moreso than 3 ever did, while trying to look like a "saturday morning cartoon" with colorfull 1-ups
But at the same time still using industry standard art styles and some industrial "metal" to make the game seem "brutal" because the 80's low tech and traditional Satanic look of ye old Doom aged badly somehow
It's more like a "marketable" edge than what people thought Doom was in the 90's or the Brutal Doom version of Doom, so it goes to the opposite direction of being edgier
It has the MCU vs comics problem where it tries to be silliar than the source material in some ways, almost to appeal to the whole family but still trie to be cool enough, that certain old elements are treated like a liability or outdated
If anyone describes their own game as "something from a mind of a 12 year old" they're fucking lying because edgy teens could easily make something edgier when they call you a faggot in COD

Hexen/Heretic are harder to bring back because their setting would be seen as just generic fantasy and the new Doom games ended up having a more simplified setting, you could even see the Sentinel stuff fitting Quake 1 better
You'd also have to think of gameplay innovation to make it stand out to the new Doom games, reboot Shadow Warrior and even those retro indie games
Most retro FPS were unique in gameplay because they were all testing new waters for game design and engine tech, so they might as well exist solely for the sake of innovation
At least some have mod support
Sadly, Blood's setting is probably harder to pull off in this day and age and the source code is still unavailable

You look at the textures and sprites and realize the setting is more unique than most people give credit for, while probably telling a more interesting story than what you'd find in 2016/Eternal codexes
Doom mods/wads/etc that aren't about other media or OC's are a good example of how interesting Doom's aesthetic can be, because it's both simple and complex enough to warrant content creation potential like a brush and canvas
If you wanted to "expand" the "Doomverse", just look at the repository in Realm667, people actually tried to embrace Doom's weird look and actually believe in it, instead of rebooting it
Doom was rebooted a few times and changed developers, both in and outside of id itself, while having a "reinterpretable" image that anyone has their own unique view on
