What's the most interesting /vr/ prototype we know of?

Pic related. I'm really bummed we lost the v0.5 bloodlines prototype forever.

How do you define interesting? Earliness, divergence from retail, perceived quality of final product? Amusingness/strangeness of experimentation that didn't carry over to retail? Most of the "interesting" aspects of Sonic 2 prototypes seem to be due to fantasies regarding things like Genocide City instead of anything that's actually been found (which, while interesting, are mostly just development steps toward a finished game which was built on top of the original game without too many wild experiments beyond the scrapped Hidden Palace Zone).

Most fakes are pretty easy to spot, because most forgers don't really know what they're doing. Some people have gone above and beyond to try to scam by making convincing fakes, but even then a little detective work can rule some of them out as BS. A lot of times these things are ultimately purchased based heavily on faith that they aren't fakes. You'd make more money in the long run forging convincing retail games.

You'd need to know company and period accurate parts for the cartridge, then you'd need romhacking talents (from programming to art) and the means to put all that together on your new fake cartridge.

There are much easier ways to scam people with a lot less effort

CD-R protos are certainly easier to fake, though there are definitely a number of factors to take into account when trying to convincingly forge even with those. But yes, even legit ones are typically just regular CD-Rs with some handwriting on them.

Someone WILL eventually upload it, or once the ($$$) problems are sorted (patreon drive?)
iirc the one who published the 0.1 beta strongly implied he has it.

There's a lava screen (4-5) with a heat effect, but it's just for magazine screenshoots. It doesn't even scroll properly, and is so broken the only working part is what you see in that one screenshot. The more interesting things with it are unused rotating platforms, and SMB1-like flames that shoot upwards, probably meant for it.

The game has code for a level select and a sample version timer. One of those cheats was repurposed for something else in the final (573 sound test one) and as is tradition with castlevania prototypes, dracula is still unimplemented but everything else is prepared (stage 6 is completely absent though)

There's some censorship too. The game was meant to release first in the US, so only prototype versions still have this. 0.1 already has the gory death animations, and early boss sprites (they go as far as stage 5), and the green spiked wheel in stage 1 is supposed to be drenched in blood.

tl;dr you're not missing on too much, move on

Which kinds of prototypes intrigue you the most? Prototypes of popular games even if said protos are quite late and with minimal differences, something super early even if the corresponding final game is nothing great, games that were never released at all, or stuff that was ultimately released but differed drastically from the earlier development versions to the point that it was less like a development stage and more like a new variation on the same game (like RE 1.5)?

Those beggars are stupid for expecting everything now for free with zero compromises.
Arcade betas owners are in a bigger conundrum because they don't want to be immediately left out of a collectors circle because they're that one guy who devaluates their rare games, so they have to do it step by step.

Bloodlines' case is more stupid because they sabotaged the attempt to FUND the release, and were abrasive and dismissive of the owner wherever he went. What's their problem with the rare game's owner making some money for himself to offset the loss before publishing the cart? I don't get the thought process. If he has some ritual planned before the ROM release and intends to release it, what's the problem?

Of course there are exceptions, such as Frank Cifaldi (Aladdin Genesis that he advertised, got bought off by Disney to do a shit compilation, and never released much of any of the awesome stuff in the source code, or his SimCity leaks which followed a similar media cycle) who loves the spectacle and uses it to promote himself as THE retro compilations guy to potential publishers, or TCRF and their shitty vanity projects with wack0's pokemon leaks (two years of a media circus and tranny translation projects just for ONE prototype, and low resolution incomplete pics of prototype Gen 1 pokemons, and a weird fantasy tale about a japanese hoarder who died and left these carts. with zero plans to release the rest, ofc.)

Back during E3 2018 some of you might remember photos like this popping up, with the threads being pulled shortly after. The leaker claimed to be part of Nintendo, and said they would come back with more when they could, when Nintendo wasn't watching. They were scared Nintendo would catch them. After a few threads they never posted again. Despite initial shock and confusion, the threads, photos, and topic, eventually fell into obscurity. People forgot all about it, writing it off as a hoax.

Reggie retired shortly after, and there is evidence that it was him trying to leak these out to the public. Unfortunately for him he got sniffed out by the big N before he could expose more of Nintendo's secrets. Who else but upper management could have access to these archived projects? It wasn't the sort of thing a programmer or middle management would be able to find.

Reggie supposedly retired, but I think its obvious that stunt was what made Nintendo force him to quit. they couldn't trust him anymore. He was a threat. Letting Reggie claim he was retiring is just Japanese business talk, professionalism, and politics. Firing Reggie would have made everyone involved look bad. He was their PR man, and everyone loved him. Trusted him. He was the "golden child."

Reggie tried to show us the fucked up experiments Nintendo were up to and how far they were willing to go to stay ahead of their competition. Ethics be damned. Sony and Microsoft has outperformed them for the last few years, and Nintendo's stock holders were threatening to pull out.

I don't know how far up the totem pole it goes, or if Miyamoto himself knew about it or not, but there were clearly powerful and wealthy men involved who were financing these failed amiibo projects. Gene splicing and genetic engineering aren't cheap. And they aren't the sort of thing your average game company can do on their own without outside help.

Reggie tried to warn us. Tried to show us something was wrong underneath the veneer.

Potential thought process experiment:

They want to make money off it, because it would be irresponsible to waste the opportunity in the eyes of the IP holder of this dead property
Then they want to sell it, but the game is buggy and unfinished and wouldn't pass certification for the emulated collection (notice how Rayman 2 is a vertical slice one level demo and not the full game)
Then they want to fix it (Steam is somehow never an option) but the game code is complex to reverse engineer and requires some investment / savvy romhackers
Then they decide it's too complicated and sit on it
Then cartridges rot and hard drives crash and backups get lost and it's truly lost forever, this time for real.
