Should I do this to my Dreamcast?

Also, Dreamcast general thread I suppose.

Redream runs better on my machine and I don't really like Retroarch. Also, the standalone version of flycast is kind of confusing. Nonetheless, it would be pointless to change now.

Keep your DC untouched as long as the disc drive works. Buy a cheap DC with a fucked disc drive and use that as your GDEmu sled.

That way you don't have to give up playing official games, and can prolong the life of your disc drive instead of wearing it down playing CD-Rs.

There's something to be said for never having to buy old disks that will eventually fail and lasers that will fail far before that. Having a system with no moving parts that will last much longer and doesn't require cases of burned games and dealing with bad rips/compressed DC games that don't like to load correctly.

>> No.6903790

>>6901945
from greatest to least importance:
faster load times
adding more files to an SD card is more convenient than burning discs even if burning discs is trivial
you can find TOSEC rips of pretty much any game or software and it will just werk, if something ultra obscure doesn't have a CDI rip it's no problem
no more downsampled sound or videos, though most downsampled sound is passable over TV speakers
some game rips remove languages and have no rips with them intact, can be torture if you want to use non-english text or voices
web browsers included with games usually get ripped and they're fun to look through if you're autistic

I think every ODE device for the Dreamcast will play most multi disc games without trouble. D2 used to be the only game ODEs struggled with. I'm unsure which ones now work. Setup depends on which device you get. the USB-GDROM and the upcoming MODE are drag-and-drop, while I'm pretty sure the GDEMU requires file name manipulation and the use of a program to get games onto it.

I've got DC with no GDs and a bunch of CD-Rs. First CD-R that I burned was missing music entirely (Sega Rally 2). CD-Rs from a lot were missing some music, too.
For the price of chink GDEmu it really isn't big of a deal, when CDI are lottery.

>> No.6903893

>>6903819
i saw someone speculate D2's only problem was how quickly the GDEMU switched discs, which is configurable, but i never heard back if someone tried it with higher values.
i haven't played D2 because i don't play dub-only games, but when messing with the parameters i saw setting it too low broke disc switching in pop'n music games, but other uses of disc swapping still worked.

>I'm pretty sure the GDEMU requires file name manipulation and the use of a program to get games onto it
it requires name manipulation, but not a specific program, that program just automates the naming and mods the menu software to load faster.

you solder the ide cable direcly on the gd drive or use a pcb for a cleaner job. Once done you install dreamshell on your HDD and boot either with a burned CD launcher or a flashed bios. The compatibility is great with the last gen of ide hard drives (size > 120GB) but as >>6904004 said the biggest drawback are CDDA games. Right now native CDDA features can't be called so an in memory software is used to emulate them. Works for some games but it is far from a stable solution.

>> No.6904653
