I don't like any consoles other than NES, SNES, and Gameboy. There's some kind of magic that's really missing from everything else.

I like the "spirit" of the ZX Spectrum, and I miss the days when random 14 year olds with tape recorders were genuinely innovating design and technical architecture. I think that was on Twitter, but regarding James, he doesn't really use social media much, I doubt he browses Reddit, or reads Youtube comments, that's all Mike. Though I think the dick pic thing was so infamous James must know about it. Probably Mike himfslef told him about it, apologized and told him that he deleted the pic.
Mike is a very rowdy person, but James likes him and considers him his friend. Again, it's a matter of how much negativity it generates from people. Mike already has a negative reputation within actual cinemassacre fans, but the actual "core" fans (the kind of people that browse the subreddit) are still a minority compared to the millions of people who watch AVGN's videos. So I guess for now it's not an issue. But again, once the potential possibility that Cinemassacre as a company would get tried to get cancelled over loco bandito and Mike's weird stuff, then Ryan himself would probably talk with James about removing Mike from the crew. A lot of Synapse and the early Epyx stuff was designed mainly around the Atari 8-bits and those are usually the best versions. A lot of Datasoft and Broderbund games were designed mainly around the Apple II so those also tend to be the best ones.

IIRC I think the JPC versions made it that you could just select spells from a menu while the Apple II required you to type out their name. The C64 Wizardrys came out years after the Apple originals and are based on the JPC versions, not the Apple ones.

1. The Spectrum was like a game console; it had a fixed, unchanging configuration--PCs had hundreds of configurations. In that time frame you'd often have to support several graphics standards and various generations of x86 CPU.

James is a film nerd, not a gamer. He basically grew out of games shortly after college. The AVGN was an accidental success he produced as a result of his passion for filmmaking, not games. The character isn't even based on him. It's based on Mike, who was the one who pushed him into making it a series. Being in the right place in the right time (at the dawn of online video), he signed a contract with Screwattack and churned out a number classic videos, but at the cost of burning himself out.

James eventually ran out of material from his childhood for the series, and tried to leverage the success of the channel into making a feature-length film that he hoped would serve as a farewell to both the character and the channel, and herald his transformation into a movie director - his actual dream. Unfortunately (and predictably), the film was a critical and commercial failure, and ignored/sneered at by everyone in Hollywood both before and after release.

After coming back to the channel, it was clear he'd lost a lot of his passion for it, seeing it as beneath his talents. The quality and frequency of AVGN nosedived as he phoned it in and he spent more time with his family. The attitude of his wife (who previously criticised the channel as a "caucasian sausage fest") may have also influenced him. Around this time, Bootsy (who'd become more of a presence) and Kyle both left the channel due to ill-feeling over not being paid properly for their contributions, and Monster Madness got cancelled for 'taking too much time' (a theme that would eventually become common). It seemed clearer and clearer James only cared about doing as little as possible for as much money as possible now. It was like he resented having to come back.

They also started doing in-video ads where James enthusiastically declared his love for shitty, exploitative mobile games that the AVGN would have murdered him for.

Soon enough, the entire fat, greasy, uncharismatic Screenwave team became a core part of the channel (who all also have pretty shitty personal histories, and don't seem like good people at all) and like the Soviet Union, we were supposed to pretend this had always been the case, and Bootsy and Kyle never existed. James ramped up production of AVGN again, but farmed out all the writing and production to Screenwave, making it lose its soul. It became a brand, not a punky, rebellious product, where James reads off an autocue lines he didn't write about games chosen with YouTube's algorithm in mind more than personal importance, or comedic potential.

The most memorable takeaway from the panel was the fact that they really painted James as being very minimally involved in a lot of their production. Like, they really try hard to use up as little of him time as possible. Apparently it was a logistical nightmare in reality, but the point is, they are catering to making James spend as little time as possible in the production of AVGN videos.

I know that SMB and LOZ both took a year of work and it was probably similar for Konami games. Ports like the DOS Castlevania were probably made in 2-3 months tops and the team had no time for playtesting or even any resources but an NES and a Castlevania cartridge to study the game with and try to vaguely simulate it.
