In light of the new rules I decided to sit down and make infographics for Serious Shite; one for basic info and the other for modding. Personally I’m still opposed to the rule changes, but since this is the world we're living in now I don’t think adding Sam, Noone Lives Forever, Painkiller, RTCW, Timesplitters etc. would change much in the general. Gonna post ‘em once and let the “community” decide whether to include them or not. Either way mods can still suck a fat one for not making /v2k/ or just not changing this board’s rules.

If you think about it, making Doom maps is kind of like having sex with a woman. It's straight-forward, it's easy, everyone's done it. Whereas Build mapping is more akin to fucking a wild lioness. I like UT'99 Flak design more than original, because original is a grayish boring thing with weaker animation. In '99 it looks like a heavy duty industrial tool, with simpler design to suit the mundane work purpose, and animation looks weightier and more impactful, also shows better difference between primary and secondary fires.
Later iterations began overdesigning it, ading extra hanging plates/wires/tubing that looks weak and ready to break.

Out of OG Unreal I like designs of Dispersion pistol, ASMD (amsd projectile itself looks cooler in UT'99 though) and Minigun. The other guns look better in UT'99.

It may be a step in the right direction from UT3 design, but still has elements of said overdesign - namely the tubing, that has no reason to be exposed other to make design more visually complex, and would've been concealed within the case on an actual gun had it been designed by IRL standards, unless those tubes require regular manipulation from the user.
Extractor bits are nice touch, but they as well does not come in such abundance - usually 1 or 2 tops. I know that they hold the heavy flak charge, but again, 2 would've been enough.
They look like they have been designed under impression from AR-15 bolt locking lugs.
In fact such amount of extractors complicates the ejection process -which is why there's usually only one-two, with a static piece on the slide's end of travel, that tips the case off the extractor, causing it to eject.

Also it looks less bulky in UT4, than UT'99 one, and I like that bulkiness.

I've actually spliced and tweaked Marisa's DoomReal to rebalance the damage, and make U1 minigun, flak and RL to use their UT models, and ASMD to shoot UT style shots.

What cosmetic mods do you guys use to spice up regular Doom? Ever since I picked up Dead Marine (NOT the horrible redux one) I can't play without it.

It pretty much has everything, chunkier gun sounds and visual recoil, new sounds for picking up different items and for monsters, simple gore system, fixed sprites, alternate death animations.. It has a HUD that is too big and clunky and there are blood graffiti on the walls now which don't really look nice. But that can easily be ignored.

I feel flattered, but don't keep your hopes up. I suck at basically everything, so don't expect great maps or nice sprites in the near future.
And yeah, Build would probably be a better fit - I mean, Ion Fury already has pretty much the look I would like going for - but apart from as you already mentioned Doom being immensely better moddable, I also have zero experience with Build anything. I took a whiff of MapEdit because I was interested in the Blood mapping project and decided it's not for me.
If it's any consolation for you, I am currently building a mall map with a bunch of Dook textures. As mentioned in the earlier post, MEG-1 is so wacky that I see no problem in just mixing everything together.

As for the current state of the project: The todo list is growing and growing. I spent the last few days making perps because I don't really see the regular Doom monsters. Lots of street level thugs and such. However, while all enemies are about as weak as Zombiemen, they also hit A LOT harder. Evasion and crowd control shall be a huge thing here.

Well on one side of things they've had to pander to current expectations and the two recent games have suffered from it, a little bit. A lot in some people's minds. On the flipside they've been taking pointers from the more popular community projects. Brutal Doom being the obvious big influence but forum posters, both big and small, also got some licks in here and there. Loose design and idea interpretations here and there. Plenty of devs lurk both the zdoom and doomworld forums it would seem. Might even be some /vr/ nods in there.
So, they make something, have their testers do the thing, get bitched at, change something, release some promo stuff, get bitched at, change something. It's a tricky cycle. But maybe, JUST MAYBE, if the stars align, the testers and online watchers won't be awful this time around. Or, they can implement proper gameplay options. Pander the everybody! Customize and go crazy or play vanilla.
And allow modders to mod the game. Naturally. What a nice dream.

someone mentioned this wad, the japanese community wad, some threads ago, and i'm playing it right now. thank you so much anon, this mapset is really delightful. (note it's from 2016 and played with complevel 2!). quite unusual too. also i'm using the hud and have slowly learned their numeric character set, though there have been some funny moments of "oh shit less health than i realized" and "oh shit that medikit was wasted".

relatedly, like 2048, it's a bunch of small maps. i think i really enjoy these small focused mapsets with many contrasting styles. desu,.sunlust is mostly like that for me too, though there are exceptions in sunlust of course, and the length is still greater.

i like pistol start single segment runs, but am not that good, so 2048 was actually quite perfect for me. even black crest (map 29), my favorite of the set =)

Back in June I tried prying through Quake III Revolution with Dragon Unpacker, because people were posting those unused Doomguy voicelines, and I found out that there were 4 more characters with unused voices inside, but I wasn't able to open or extract them since DU would always get stuck in a loop when opening them. Seems like a map that came straight out of the 90s, with all its flaws and that. Not really a good map. Many misaligned textures, the combat was uninteresting (lone pinkes outside small/cramped areas and without other demons to assist aren't usually a threat, for example), two lone Barons in a relatively big room also aren't a threat or very exciting to fight. No fight was exciting at all desu. Some areas are straight-up ugly (such as the one with the skin texture tiled all over it), and several misaligned textures. The layout isn't a big deal but I can see something good and more polished being done with it. The start of the map gives a completely different idea to what the rest of the map's theme actually is, makes me think that there was a previous level that followed the hellish, lava-filled cave theme. You can definitely do some cool vanilla maps in the future if you invest a bit more in it.

This map is a bunch of very intense battles, and encounter design is good, but what makes my jaw drop is how the level reuses space and transforms for following encounters.

It's also suitably hard for the Map 29 slot, making the player pick up a Megasphere with his VooDoo doll as part of the exit of Map 28 was something I kind of just did for the hell of it, because he might have gotten beaten the fuck up by those Arch-Viles at the end, but I realize that this is incredibly helpful for continuous players as they go into Map 29. Continuous play is what it is, it'll 9 times out of 10 make maps easier as most maps designed around Pistol Start, but I do wonder just how much harder Black Crest would have been without that refreshener.

If that's true, that'd make some .wads straight up unavailable. Some authors involved with classic sets moved on and were never heard from again in the community, some are even dead.

I guess when I saw Map 30 listed as "Very Hard", and I kind of shrugged and thought "But is it really?" it's maybe because I had been playtesting the level a lot and gotten good at it.
A fair bit of time later, actually going into it for my first real run of the set, continuous no less, it actually is pretty hard, like it's mild enough for the most part, but the boss fight actually gave me a pretty damn hard time. I hope I didn't make it too hard.

I disagree. Heretic's bestiary doesn't need much to become high tier, it only suffers for being stuck with what it was. For as good as a lot of doom's monsters were, their usage was just as, if not more, important than what they could do.
Since most of the focus in heretic was "enemies are bullet sponges, and your attacks are designed to push them back," changing a few values and modifying an attack or two can go a long way. Granted, I might be a bit biased.

The Iron Lich and Maulotaur both have complex behavior, but in both cases it was somewhat poorly implemented. Gargoyles would sometimes cancel their own dashes mid dash for no real reason. The entire Ghost mechanic tied to physical immunity is something that oozes potential. If someone with no programming background who sucks at making mods can breathe some life into their AI using mostly vanilla assets, they can definitely be revived to be both worthwhile and memorable.

Heretic has less of a community because it is a less popular game than doom, not necessarily because it's worse. Just like how many mappers and modders have done great things with doom, others have done with heretic as well. Some great doom mods even started as heretic mods, after all.

Its diffiulty specific, but yeah higher difficulties have it disabled. Its actually going to get a scripted version of noinfighting that doesn't prevent damage like the base CVAR does.
In general, the strength of the magic and inventory systems, paired with the speed of most enemies, makes infighting counter intuitive to its design. Between items like the rooster roaster, morph ovum, the torch spell, flechettes using the protection spell to point blank spam explosives, and the good ol tome of power... encounters that relied on infighting just don't need it anymore.
I have considered making it an optional CVAR, then then again, you can always enable it in the console as well. I'll have to see how viable it would be to impliment into the new script.

Make a few vanilla maps first.
In Boom, and especially UDMF formats, the ediitor overwhelms you with massive function and property lists.
Make yourself familiar with vanilla functions by making vanilla map or two, using as many different functions as you can like stair builder for example.
Then transition to Boom format, which expands on old functions with nuanced varieties and introduces a lot of new ones.
Learn to use Voodoo Doll and dummy sectors for scripting.
