Been playing this recently. It's okay but the music is driving me mad.

I played the japanese version a few weeks ago to get a grasp of what changed. You basically cant hold a direction and keep walking during screen transitions, but the camera angles arent really bad. The camera became a problem in the english version on the very first enemy

The entire thing is voiced in english minus the text like RE games too, someone really needs to hack this game or translate the JP text.

Interesting. I've been playing the NTSC version so can't comment on the differences. Funny thing is that the two main characters are voiced by Sonic and Eggman's VA's. Wonder if Sega called them to do Sonic after this?
Also fully 3D enviroments and even things like pistol slide locking back on empty and modeled fingers are very impressive for and early 1999 game.

Hell yes, love me some Blue Stinger. I don't recall ever struggling with the US version's camera, but I plan on playing the JP version for future playthroughs.

Also Illbleed, from the same creator is a unique gem worth checking out as well.

ED is trash with nothing even approaching an attempt at balanced gameplay. The fact that you can recover magic, which can then be converted to any other spell or resource in the game, simply by WALKING, makes the entire game a fucking joke.

Oh, also, TLOU is very much like RE. Cope. Are you one of the zoomers that shits on it and calls it a movie game because /v/ told you it was but has never played it?

I remember seeing screenshots of it back in a '98 issue of EGM and remember being blown away by the seemingly photorealistic textures, smooth character models, and awesome special effects/lighting. I was used to only low res jittery PS1 graphics and didn't even have a good enough gaming PC, so this was a revelation to me.

I thought the sanity tricks were cool, but I rarely saw them because of how easy it is to recover sanity once you get the sanity recovery spell. The way everything in the game is tied to a master resource that you get literally by just walking around, is the definition of game breaking. You don't even have to go out of your way to cheese the game. It leads you by the nose to the optimal strategy of pacing around constantly to recover health, magic, and sanity.

i started a comprehensive list of retro RE clones (or basically just fixed camera horror games), let me know if there's anything missing i should add. i was initially including stuff like D2 and Illbleed as well but i wanted to just stick as much as i could to games with fixed camera angles, even adding SH to the list felt a bit of a stretch.

I’m currently playing through this. It’s actually a pretty neat RE clone. You use a sword instead of gun (similar to soul of the samurai) and have magical powers. There’s an lock-on for enemies so the sword play isn’t all that terrible for an early 3D ps1 game. The best part is the environment. It takes place in a neo futuristic gothic castle. Lots of slick gothic architecture mixed with futuristic computers and gizmos. The game also users fixed camera angles, so there’s some real nice details to everything. The music is similar too. It sounds like a futuristic dungeon synth album.
But it is a ps1 game so the fighting enemies can be a pain at times.

In order of preferences:
SH1-4: obviously
Dino Crisis 2: gorgeous screens, super fun gameplay. Pure Capcom quality, but it's also going full action.
Onimusha 1: also more action but gorgeous PS2 pre-rendered, and still keeps a creepy and cohesive RE like atmosphere. Sequels still fun but lack that RE tightness and vibe.
Alone In The Dark 4: it's not Capcom tier but feels like one of the tightest in the genre, nice Lovecraft like vibe but gameplay is a bit clunky, pre-rendered visuals aged pretty well since it got ported to PC and PS2 era
Koudelka: top tier Gothic atmosphere, but combat wise is a boring JRPG, feels half finished.
Dino Crisis 1: below Koudelka even though it's objectively better, because while it's well made I find the switch to 3D environments disappointing and it looks rather sterile. Pale compared to RE, boring compared to DC2.
Parasite Eve 2: some of the most gorgeous pre-rendered backgrounds, but also JRPG stuff and uneven atmosphere. Need to try 1, which might be better but looks like even more of a JRPG.
Deep Fear: I love the Abyss underwater base setting, and it's all around a decent RE knockoff mechanically but also really uninspired with its designs, uninteresting exploration and poorly paced. Some great stuff mixed with some really shitty stuff, can be divisive.
Obscure: no pre-rendered, shallow teen slasher atmosphere, but perfectly average all around. Nothing great but nothing bad either.
Fear Effect: I really love the art style and cyberpunk vibe, but it's pretty tedious to play.
Evil Dead: it's pretty bad even as a fan of the movies...
Martian Gothic: haven't played it but from what I've seen, looks pretty broken...
Also need to try: Vampire Countdown, Nocturne, Galerians, the DC ones... Haunting Ground and Fatal Frames don't look appealing to me (3D, no combat...).
Chase the Express: pretty cool! If you like 90s action and train settings. But not horror.
Also: Scratches, myst-like PC point n click but in a spooky mansion

Not true at all. In Haunting Ground, Hewie is how you usually attack enemies. There’s also small bombs you can make. And In fatal frame you uses the camera obscura as you weapon. RE clones always have some way of “attacking” but it’s not always a gun or conventional weapon.

"Illbleed requires a high degree of intelligence to play, there are many mysteries and horror (old and new). I attempted to mix the early visions of all the famous directors: Cameron, Spielberg, Lucas, Miyazaki, and Kurosawa. It was just an entire mix of entertainment that many people couldn't understand. To me, the negative reviews of the game did not affect me at all. I just looked toward the future and have a vision," Nishigaki said.

The trick to fighting enemies in this game is not to attack first. Let them attack, dodge, then counter.

Overblood being a "RE clone" is a misconception considering they were both developped at the same time and Overblood released only a couple months after.

They're both AitD clones which is quite obvious in Overblood's case with the hand to hand combat for instance.

It is however quite amazing how similar Overblood and RE are down to the story.

>To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them.
