......this game just outright sucks. I'll get it out of the way right here and now if you need a quick, concise review. SUCK. Even for 20 bucks. This is why.

First, I'll get to the gameplay. This is a 2D vertical-view shooter, personally a favorite genre of mine. It's a genre based around skill, reflexes, finding just the right line through a hailstorm of bullets while darting frantically for items that you shouldn't even be risking your life over, but you are anyway. It's entertaining, highly involving, and highly challenging. Giga Wing 2 gives me no such feeling. Instead, I feel like I grabbed a controller, had a strobe light flashed in my face repeatedly, died through no fault of my own about 10 times out of 15, and greeted with ending credits about 20 minutes later.
Firstly, the weapon system is a novel gimmick that wears its welcome and becomes a monotonous, flashy bore for the rest of the game. Your regular weapon is actually quite useless by comparison to your reflector, which absorbs enemy fire and shoots it back at them. The thing is, the screen is nearly always full of enemy fire, and you can't really move around it too often. So you just don't bother, and use the reflector. Now the game turns into you running around the screen actually -grabbing- enemy fire like powerups so that you can launch it back. For a brief interval after using the reflector, you cannot use it again, so you'll have to wait if you want to do it again. In this interval, it's likely that the screen will be filled with enemy fire yet again. This is why the game gives you the standard-issue kill-everything megabomb, so that you don't die when you're vulnerable and can't do anything about it. But what happens when you run out, you ask? You die. Through no fault of your own, more than likely. It becomes obvious that the designers really just didn't know what to do with this game design to prevent automatic deaths.

It's also pretty easy to get the first extend early on by going into the lava level at rank three with a full meter (the rocks are worth tons of points), but desu you shouldn't need to. Stage order doesn't really matter, just figure out which ones you'd prefer playing on the lower ranks.

Gigawing's scoring system and bullet patters dont make sense to me as a shooter. I can see how Capcom was going for something slightly different in scoring and dodging, but good god man.. nobody can dodge those bullets!! Its not even L33T.. its just dumb....making you rely on your Reflect Laser/Barrier. In which case wtf is the point of ever using your Uber 7331 dodging skills that you've honed in on over the course of hundreds of shooters to avoid the barrage of bullets, just to bust out your Reflect Barrier to avoid everything and catch those points!.WTF is the fun in that?.. If you've played it, you'll quickly realize that most of the bullet patters are impossible to dodge, literally impossible. Capcom must have made it this way on purpose, because it makes good use of the Reflect Laser/Barrier giving a hand in the scoring system.

On the flip side of course you are forced to doge enemy bullets just like any other shooter, but the ones that are possible to dodge dont really make it that challanging. To me when you waste all of your skill dodging largely seperated pink bullets and smashing through all of the rest with your Reflect Laser/Barrier, it just seems like a waste!!!! I feel like a Noob in any other Vert shooter using the Super Bombzor when things get too tough.

When i play a shmup, i want to dodge bullets, i want to feel great when i intricately maneuver through a screen full of bullets and not breaking my concentration or losing a life/Credit. Gigawing's premise to me just seems like a big cop out. Your not really dodging anything, and to the onlooker who has never played watching someone play, might think it was a MANIC CRAZY HOLY HELL bullet fest like Pachi or Feveron, but when in reality its just a huge scoring system and a cop out Bomb!.. dam i hate that!!!!!...

None of them, because Touhou is easily one of the dullest franchise in the history of STGs. Each episode following the shrine maiden and her pals from Gensokyo as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. The writing is dreadful; the plot is terrible. As I played, I noticed that every time a character went for a kill, the author wrote instead that the character "exterminates youkai".

ZUN's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that he has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Touhou by the same Square Enix game studio. They wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are playing Touhou at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to play Dragon Quest." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Touhou" you are, in fact, trained to play Dragon Quest.

They get easy when you are going for a 2-ALL. It then become a chore to play through the first loop just to get the the second and then fuck up at the beginning of the second loop and having to redo 25 minutes to get back to the loop again.

You shouldn't be doing full runs if you're dying to 2-1 and 2-2.
If you want a 2-all you should focus mainly on the second loop until you got it down and can clear it consistently, then you do full runs.

if you're just playing for the Achievement trophy then you have to be over prepared, like I said and practice second loop for weeks/months, until you can do it in your sleep. Then you go for the 2-all, and you minimize your resets.

If you actually like the game then replaying the first loop is not a problem, it's part of the fun.

What annoys me is when they won't let you practice bosses. The Mushimesama port on 360 and Steam is absolutely fantastic in so many ways, but as far as I can see training mode won't let me jump straight to the bosses.

wew, almost had me riled up. Yeah the trick in souky is to abuse the items for score, they come out on a timed basis and you make tons of points going over the bomb limit. Bosses also work on a timer so you want to kill them with as little time left as possible so that you can milk the item drops. Great soundtrack, presentation, gameplay, the level where you're descending to the earths surface is really fucking cool, just like the level where you do that in Galactic Attack, another favorite of mine
