Good deals today!

Gen1 Pokemon board game for 50 cents, heck yeah.

Games were five bucks each. Breath of Fire and The 7th Saga for SNES, and Strider for Genesis. Strider came with the manual, and Genesis mini-catalog, and even had the original receipt from 1993!

Grey brick GameBoy for $2. Powers on, but needs a good cleaning. Everything had a healthy coat of pollen on it.

Genesis with Sega CD was $20, but I got 'em down to $15 since the CD portion was missing the power cable. Got a bitchin' Light Phaser though. They had a Mk. 1 Genesis too for $10, but no cables, so I passed.

His prices are like eBay *1.5 so I didn't get anything. I then stopped by a Play n Trade and their prices were similar to his. On the way home I saw a sign for more sales, but by this point it was around 12:00 so I figured they would be cleaning up. By chance the yard sale was hosted by someone I knew from highschool and she guilted me into buying a cupcake. It was good, but it wasn't as good as video games. I don't know where you guys are from, but here in Utah we have a lot of very wealthy mormon hipster teenagers that reign chaos in the market.

A year or so ago, they just wrecked everything, and started buying up every retro game in town, no collectors could get anything anymore because these little shits used their parents' money to purchase everything good.

I also know of a growing market for butchering games here. People repurposing carts as wallets, and cellphone cases. Making consoles into lunchboxes and purses and shit. It is pretty popular here. So they buy up all these games and then they take the board out, throw it away, and use the plastic quite literally as an accessory.

Then there is the oil worker.
>(please pull out your maps of Utah now)
He is an aspie that works the oil fields out here, and he is notorious around the valley. He does 5 weeks on, 3 weeks off. On his 3 weeks off, he has a paid lackey that drives him from North Salt Lake
to St. George one day, and then from St. George back up to North Salt Lake the next. For three weeks straight this guy buys every game from every pawn shop, thrift store and yard sale EARLY in the morning. He pays his way to get into thrift stores before opening to buy every game.

I have only seen him once, he is a skinny, pale man with long balding hair. He will sit in a shop, look over every game regardless of system for about an hour, then he buys everything in the shop with his money from working the oil fields. He has no friends or family from what I hear, only games.

Essentially, here in Utah there is a massive dry spell for about 3 weeks every 5 weeks.

Sounds like an urban myth, but this guy is a fucking nightmare.

I can't even pretend to understand. Here in the top end of the Welsh Valleys there's no interest in old games. I was in a pawn shop the other day, the guy told me he just had a bunch of PS1 games in, I looked through them and found the usual Spyros, Crash Bandicoots, MGS, and Resident Evils, plenty of games for 50 pence each, that sell for 5 - 20 on eBay.

That is a strange mind set to have about vidya. Its not like they are just naturally occurring.

Though I find video game traps to be a very interesting subject.

Go out to a remote city in the middle of nowhere, there are a few here in Utah, St. George is one. It is FULL of vidya because they get left behind, and it isn't connected to any major cities, so there are no games moving out. Games have stagnated there.

In one retro shop there, they have a whole aisle of 2600 carts, and separate aisles for n64 and SNES. A wall of in box games, and a whole big case of NES games.

Their prices are pretty ok, but I didn't buy much there.

Look for that in your area... Look for cities, or large towns that are about 100 miles out from the nearest big town or city. Vidya trap.

FAT ps2
Slim ps2 with a bunch of ps2 games
GBA sp with about 15 games
2 supervisions, one has a broken screen though...

I still have an atari 2600 laying around and a NES complete inbox at Goodwill.

Hey guys, I'm really new to this kind of stuff, but I'm extremely interested in giving it a try. I live in Southern New Jersey, and I wanted to know, since you guys seem pretty knowledgeable, how to start out retro game hunting and all that?

Where do you find the yardsales? As in what websites and all that? Any general tips for someone just starting out?

there's a guy on craigslist selling...

1. Tiger Heli (Near mint condition)
2. Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt (some marker on the cartridge (not the sticker), excellent condition otherwise)
3. Xenophobe (Near mint condition)
4. Time Lord (Near mint condition)
5. Dr. Mario (Near mint condition)
6. Dragon Warrior (Near mint condition)
7. Operation Wolf (Near mint condition)
8. Super Mario Bros/ Duck Hunt/ World Class Track Meet (Near mint condition)
9. Iron Tank (Near Mint condition)
10. Legacy of the Wizard (Near mint condition)
11. Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf w/ manual (Excellent condition)

for $35.

i already know it's a good deal, but are any of these games worth actually owning/playing?

Craigslist is a good place to find yard sales. I try to find a few that sounds like they might have video games or electronics and head to those. Most of the time along the way I'll find signs for other garage sales so I'll end up going to twice as many as I planned to.

Pawn shops can be hit or miss, but I've gotten lucky with some. They usually know to overprice the popular stuff like Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, but sometimes they don't know what they have and under price it. This seems to happen more in my area with alternate versions of games or some obscure games.

Nice grab. After I got the Atari 800, had a little bug scare when I spotted a bug and realized the old boxes had been in storage for a while. So I took the Atari 800, diskette reader, and printer out of their boxes and put those in the garage. Going to take Saturday off from yard sales and do a complete cleaning and poisoning of my room and along the outside of the house. Front now on I'll be preforming full cleanings in my garage of new items.

But it isn't all that bad. Trading my duplicate copy of Space Raiders for the Atari 800 for Sonic 2 + Jammit, both for the Genesis. When I go to ship it tomorrow I'm also going to hit Ed McKay's Used Books. Then next week is the convention.

All resellers are trash in my eyes. I don't know why they have to lie and shit. I had some old Game Boys that I frankly didn't care much for anymore since they were admittedly in poor condition so I put them up on a local listings site for very cheap ($10 for a GB, GBP and GBC). I got a million replies, I answered all of them but people took anywhere from days to a week to respond. One guy mails me, he says "he wants to buy this for his kids so they have something to play with since they're sorta poor and the price is right". His email is "greatestgaragesaleintheworld" or something like that, so obviously he's a fucking lying reseller.

He asked me if it comes with any games, I said no, he asked if I could part with any cause his kids need something to play, so I say $40 for Pokemon Blue if he wants it, knowing full well he's a reseller (I didn't want to sell that game anyway). His response is "I can only get maybe $15 for it, 20 at most so I can give you like $10 for it otherwise it's not worth it for me to buy from you". I asked him "I thought this was for your kids" and his answer was "Well I meant that I can get it for $20 so I don't want to pay $40 for it, my kids are poor come on man" I promptly stopped responding to him and found a nice guy who actually wanted to play those things for himself or take them apart, whatever.

Like I really fucking hate resellers. Everything has got to be a straight up lie with them. This has happened several times with different ones. I don't sell to them anymore after the fucking hoops they try to make you jump through so you can give them good shit for next to nothing

Neighborhood yard sale didn't have practically anything. Did find a PSOne with a few games and two controllers for $10, though. Disc tray is fairly sticky but that can be fixed.

Figured I'd post it here since I don't see a battle station thread. I just picked the bottom one up today for 10 dollars at a yard sale. Much better than what I had before as you can see. Don't mind all the weird lines you see, that's something only the camera seems to pick up.

>Says yeah sure, goes to car brings out a big tub and a bag
>Pick out Viewtiful Joe, LoZ OoT, MM, and Golden Eye, ask if $12 is okay
>Says I can take all of it for $15
So that's
>Gamecube, all wires, one fucked up controller that I can probably fix up
>Nintendo 64, all wires, one controller in great condition, and expansion pak
>Viewtiful Joe, Luigi's Mansion, Crazy Taxi, Tom Clancy something, Sonic Adventure 2
>Donkey Kong 64, Banjo Kazooie, Tooie, Goldeneye, Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time, a couple other irrelevant sports games
>Some chinese bootleg "2000 game in one!" console with a bunch of NES games in it.

Another one I went to had a NES and a stack of good games for $20
>NES, all wires, 2 controllers, red blinking light/pin connector issue, easily fixable
>Kid Icarus, Super Mario Bros 1 - 3, some other obscure Nintendo titles, Elevator Adventure(?), California games

I doubt it. I just have 2 "stations" and figured I'd put the 64 over with the SNES. Pic related is my 2 stations. It's more out of laziness and wanting to avoid tangled mess of wires. I think it also just looks cool to have multiple televisions in my cave.

Also I have a question. For some reason there is a small black "dip" where it's supposed to be pciture but it gets warped down or something. It doesn't look bad, but the peculiar thing is it only happens on SSB. Harvest Moon doesn't do it, neither does Paper Mario, and a few other games. Anyone heard of something like this?

It's funny because the TV I picked up today is clearly larger than my "main" television now.

The same yard sale that had Contra also had Golden Sun, Golden Sun: The Lost Age, ALttP with Four Swords, Sword of Mana, and Tetris Worlds (complete with boxes and manuals), as well as Fire Emblem and Gunstar Super Heroes (cart only), all for $1 each. Here's what I picked up today for $20. A few keepers but nothing to get too excited about. The guy I bought them from said he and his brother had a big collection of old games (Nes, Snes, N64, ect) but really didn't want to sell any. I talked him into bringing some out that he didn't play all that much or ones he had more than one copy of, and this is what I got. Tried to get him to bring out his Zelda games, but he wouldn't budge. Oh well, the hunt continues...

Also, not retro, but I suppose deserves an honorable mention. I was looking through a box of toys at one sale yesterday, and there was a small CD case full of original Xbox games for $10. I don't own an original Xbox, but I guess some work on my 360. Gonna need some more jewel cases.

Zac's Videogames in Colchester is going out of business. 40% off all games. XBOX/PS2s/SNES/N64/GC/Genesis/Dreamcast systems are $10 each without cords.
admittedly they didn't have shit left for Nintendo systems but they had a lot of XBox/PS2/PS1 I didn't bother to check probably some good stuff there.
did grab a mint SNES console for $10 tho that was nice. if you're in the area check it out.

So I went over to my local game store today to trade some old stuff in, and there's this guy with like six boxes of stuff. He said I was free to make him an offer on any of it as long as it was higher than what the store would give. I offered him $10 a piece for all of this, which is double what the store offered, and he accepted.

He was a nice guy. I actually only had $57 on me so he let me get Xenogears for $7. He seemed really into games, one whole box of his was dedicated to imports and all of his consoles were modded.

Yes. Scandinavia is the perfect place to pick up Mr Gimmick, it's the only place where it got released except in Japan and it's one of the rarest (and best) NES game

Duck Tales 2 is another game that is rather common to find in yard sales and which for some reasons is a bit expensive on ebay (but then again maybe that's because i live in france and the DT2 was more popular over here)

Nipped down to the pawn shop a few minutes ago to see if they still had that copy of FFIX I passed up a few days ago that had an FF Tactics disc mixed in with it.

They didn't.

So I just bought a copy of Mario Tennis on the N64 instead. They wanted $10 (even though the N64 games are clearly marked $5 each... fucking Mario Tax), but I managed to talk the juggalo working the counter down to $6 with ease. He said that he knows his superiors are overcharging, and to come by on Sundays for the best deals. Cool guy.

G'day /vr/,
Some of you might remember me as the guy that got a Panasonic Q for free.
