And for 2d games my favorite is Neo Drift Out. It doesn't look like it would be playable from a screenshot (and tons of top-down racing games are nigh unplayable indeed) but the upcoming turn signs exactly match the shape of the actual track so you can anticipate what's coming up. Working to shave a second or two off your time to get to the next stage on one credit is really enjoyable. The cars feel great and it looks nice.

Nah. I think the last game that could be legitimately called "Test Drive" was this game (which I've also been playing, incidentally; not a bad game, although the cutscenes are cheeseball as fuck).

This game doesn't seem to work right on my Windows 10 PC (it runs as if I need a turbo button, although the real time elements such as timers still work normally) and I can't even emulate it (it won't go past the first Pong game on PCSX2) so I've had to run it on actual hardware.

Manual just does not matter. The bayonet is the best lizard car, the assoluto machines are only good for the oval so fucking whatever and the abeille is basically the best standard car in the game due to its absurd handling (admittedly not as good as the pegasus) but it has more power so it doesn't get fucked on overpass city or mythical coast reverse. Lakeside gate is Age territory anyway.

For the class 6 cars you only need vanquire (automatic available) and squadlon (again assoluto so manual is irrelevant).

Since you're a Rage chad maybe you can answer this where Google could not for decades. Initiating the drift animation works like RR1 and RRR, but exiting a drift in Rage only works when it feels like it. Even if I finish a turn with my car perfectly aligned straight, the car still likes to keep itself stuck in drift animation and stall itself to 20 kmh or something.

It is a bit finnicky for sure as unlike RR and RRR the point at where the cars grip isn't as clear to the player. However at a fundamental level rage racer's drifting behaves like the previous games you just need to be considerably smoother on the exit - i've not found any secret to it beyond practice with your car of choice.

I still get fucked by the chicane on overpass reverse (i;ve drifted through it exactly once but doing it forwards is easy). It is also why I rate the abeille so highly as its insane grip and good enough power means you will rocket through most corners and can keep up with the lizard cars on the uphill drags. The game is blatantly designed to make the player pick a manufacturer for each course but fuck that noise. I'm also convinced the extra GP until class 6 can be beaten with the starting gnade car and assoluto of choice but i've yet to do it (i've done it for the standard GP with some effort).

The external view is a goddamn noob trap as well.

if they wanna throw real bands into their game instead of paying a music guy to do the music, that's their choice, but I resent having a different (IMO inferior, in the case of GT2) auditory experience just to be able to read the menus in my native language.
translate the text I need to be able to play the game, do whatever licensing bullshit the car companies require of you as a condition of using their cars in the game, maybe give an option for either KM/H or MPH and that's it. otherwise keep everything the same. especially the music.

Old school namco had that wizardry and laser focus in making a game be the best it could. While understandable given it was 25 years ago people forget how massive the original PS1 version of ridge racer was as it was - effectively - the true arcade experience in your home. Nobody believed 3D could look that good (remember this is 1995 and other consoles that tried 3D usually did so very badly) or be so smooth.

With hindsight the perspective changes but at the time ridge racer was viewed as a game the PS1 was built for.

UG2 is overall a boring game
UG1 is a straight up racing game, its tracks and handling is all the focus

in UG2 they completely lost their focus and tried to do a billion things at once and none of it is good
the open world sucks, the handling doesn't suit it, the races are all boring and repetitive, half of it isn't fun at all and you have to spend ages driving between events

it's such a poorly thought out meme game, fondly remembered because people had it when they were kids. Hot Pursuit 2 is better, Underground is better, Most Wanted and Carbon are better

They take a while to do and are pretty boring. There's also a lot less track variety. Others have issues they take place on actual tracks as well and without any variety such as knockout, drag, or anything else. It's one of those things that pops up on replays and can wear at you going through the game. especially when you get to the 3 or 4 race championships that have one guy always rushing out ahead and can rubberband past you.

No, you just don't understand how the game is such a step down from 2 and remains inferior to revenge because you fall into said ADHD retard crowd.

Burnout 3 suffers from absolutely terrible design choices that are obscured by "OMG WE *ARE THE LAZY GENERATION" and DJ stryker. The vehicles all look the same across classes (a problem revenge has as well) meaning the difference between them is virtually non-existant. The tracks are way,. way too wide given the tighter, more technical design of 1 and 2 is lost in favour of just constantly using takedowns as a mechanic (omfg did you see how epic that was bro!?) rather than having the focus on racing first and foremost and takedowns as a tool to aid in that it is the reverse. The is a nothing but takedowns and the racing exists just to increase the challenge of them.

I'm not say it is a bad game - i'm saying it is the worst burnout game by a significant margin.

Most similar games I can think of are recent games, either consciously aping one of the two or trying to distinguish themselves to different degrees of success.
If you mean futuristic racers in general, Extreme G comes to mind as something that might have been pushed aside by F-Zero, there's Tube Slider, which was originally pitched as an F-Zero game, there's Kinetica on the PS2, Grand Chaser could have been competing with Wipeout's Saturn ports.

It seems to be like AG racan was already a small niche and piling on tens if not hundreds of titles was just saturating an already small market. Wipeout was popular but not THAT popular and Fzero was lucky it even got a sequel in GX. I think it's more a mixture of sleeper hits and gaming industry still having the mentality of churning out clones of sleeper hits to try and strike gold.
I don't think you can compare AG racing games and shit like Gran Turismo because one was a tiny niche that appeared for a short time and the other targets a fairly common hobby (carfags)
