What did you expect after 6th gen was added? Ps2 brings tons of younger sony fans to /vr/. A lot of them do retroactive console war for 5th gen too.
Yes, 5th gen console war already plagued the old /vr/, but now basically this is a 5th/6th gen console war board, and most people owned sony systems during those years(especially if their families could only afford one system).

>The most overrated game in the West, Mario 64, got a appropriate passing glance by Japanese audiences, who had become accustomed to the stellar library of PSX games by Square, Namco, Capcom, Konami, and countless others
first of all, you were outed as having made the same lie yesterday on another console war thread, but now, you're claiming that the reason why the japanese supposedly didn't like mario 64 was because they were accustomed to the "stellar library of playstation ecks games by square, namco, capcom, konami".
Well, then, Mario 64 was released in 1996, so that means play station ecks users have been "accustomed" to games from square, capcom or konami that year. Then, which are these games? That's the homework.

Nah, Ape Escape is good and an actual 3D action game, unlike Crash. it isn't really that much of a 3D platformer though, the controls in terms of platforming are pretty basic, but it has some inventive ideas with the net and using the right analog stick (I think one of the very few ps1 games that used it in a meaningful way)

It does real 3d math to transform vertexes, but the way it fills in triangles is purely 2d. It's rasterization is only accurate to the pixel a well, which gives you those jittery lines. It's made worse by the fact that it's texture mapping is purely 2d, giving you artifacts that are more obvious the larger your triangles are, so lots of games would split triangles into more triangles, which means more jittery lines and gaps, etc.

Same with saturn, except that system uses quads, so while it had other visual glitches that I could get into, you tended to have less polygons, and a bit less jittering on average.

Most of these issues are somewhat worked around though in the good ps1 and saturn games though, which is pretty impressive.

N64 made it easy to get actual correct, high quality 3d graphics, except that it's texture cache just sucked

>except that it's texture cache just sucked
Understandable, but I think in many games, developers were able to somehow work around these limitations and still deliver some great looking textures.
5th gen really was a time when only the best of the best developers could deliver something good.

>> No.6881314

>>6881295
Yes, there were some tricks n64 devs came up with to get better texture quality. I think you could disable bilinear filtering as well (maybe it was a microcode thing, and blocked off from most devs).

>> No.6881321

>>6881314
Bilinear filtering was never an issue for me, in fact, back then I considered it something good because I was put off by the rough pixelation of textures on PS1 games.

>> No.6881326

Ah, finally someone who understand that Crash isn't a real 3d game. I actually think it's *okay* but it definitely plays like a 2d platformer in 3d. It is actually amazing from a purely technical perspective but the SOOPER COOL GRAFICKS ended up gimping the gameplay. (and it still had the same vertex jiggle problems the PSX had, although the texture warp doesn't look quite as bad as most games, probably due to the fixed camera)

That said, I'll say that there's a good reason why the right analog stick isn't used like that anymore.

>> No.6881345 [DELETED]

>>6881321
It's a good thing, but it's clearly used in many n64 games to mask low quality textures. It kinda puts me off now, even though it was considered an essential feature at the time.

Straight how the average opinion changes like that over time.

>>6881326
crash avoided most of the warping issues by using flat colored polygons on the characters, and by precalculating the visible objects along a fixed path.
that meant they had a higher polygon budget, and could afford smaller polygons with less warping. I don't think there's anything to it other than that, since simply getting closer to an object without even turning will accentuate affine texture warp.
