Nah mother 1 is the one that was a straight DQ clone (at least in terms of battle mechanics), Mother 2 added enemies on the map, being able to sneak behind them, auto-win if you're overleveled, rolling HP meter which adds a sort of real-time element to the menu-based combat.. that's enough differences from DQ.
Anyway, I don't think people considered this game to be "Revolutionary" in terms of changing the genre or anything. In Japan it's a cult game because the people who worked on it were strong figures with the japanese youth of the 70s and 80s, both Shigesato Itoi and Keiichi Suzuki are legends in their respective fields, and have worked together many times, not just on Mother. Japanese people who were familiar with Itoi knew that his games would deliver his usual personal style when it comes to writing and concepts.
If you take out the context of Itoi's relevance in japanese culture, then you still have something quite unique, an RPG that's set in modern times, and which pokes fun at many RPG tropes, making it sort of a parody game (but still strong enough to not just be a total "joke" kusoge, like Takeshi's Challenge is), it's still a quality RPG, but unlike other RPGs in terms of tone, setting, etc.

6892721

>>6892614
yeah
also, to put it in more perspective, here's the PSI list per main protagonist excluding overworld-exclusive PSI.
Lucas was pretty similar to Ninten's but more reliant on greater Recovery PSI like Refresh and counterattack-based Assist PSI, Ness had even more Assist PSI pertaining to debuffing your oppenents but lacks stuff like anyting that enhances your next attack like Offense Up.

All of them didn't have the usual Offense PSI that their companions learned naturally themselves which makes you wonder why its okay in Smash? In the first Mother game, we know that George not only successfully stolen knowledge from an alien race but the fact this is stuff ANYBODY could be taught by the get-go, and its a ongoing tend. This creative advantage on the source material given the director the chances to actually flesh out the MC for the game, since obviously Smash isn't going to slip up and give the more popular protagonist the spotlight over the lead per series/game inclusion. (asides that asspull of any excuse to justify Min Min

Last but not least, in Smash, at least since Brawl, they use their signature PSI for most of their basic attacks. Ness' basics use to look like generic PSI in 64 and Melee, but after Brawl, they had to make it more akin to PK Rockin but when the opponent (see: Ness Nightmare) is using it, hence why its pink. Lucas' basics looks strikingly like PK Love but it was up until Ultimate they had to make it more blue/yellow.

Ninten obviously doesn't have his own signature PSI or PK Flash, which isn't much of a problem anyways.
either they can reflect this by having a moveset more based on Assist PSI that boosts his basic attacks or debuffs oppenents and let his use generic PSI instead of something based on a signature attack.
PK Beam would defnitely be part of his moveset, plus we even seen how it'd be translated into a Smash title. So maybe it'd be a PK Fire but instead of annoying fire, its annoying hitstun.

>I don't get why this game was found to be so revolutionary.
Only the hardcore obsessed fanboys consider it that. The only thing it added to the basic RPG formula is seeing enemies on the screen instead of the standard random encounter(and being able to avoid encounters in some cases), and auto-winning when facing enemies you can probably 1-shot. For all the praise the rolling HP/PP counters get, it's really just an easy-mode feature ensuring that your characters won't need to be revived if they take fatal damage while still having enough HP to give you time to throw a heal their way. Which means once you get deep enough into the game to have an HP buffer, you won't be dying unless everyone gets paralyzed or hit with insta-kill something.

It's an anachronistic vision of 1960s and 1980s Americana as held by a Japanese man based on his knowledge of pop culture icons like The Beatles, Chuck Berry, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones and Steven Spielberg, Stephen King, John Carpenter movies before Stranger Things made it become cool.
You have generational clashes like 70s hippies, baseball, yo-yos, classic jazz and rock references alongside skateboard punks, cellphones, arcade and ATM machines and then you have purely adventure settings going through a snow country, desert country, india, jurassic park, aliens, zombies, basically whatever Itoi thought was cool he'd throw in there.

In an old Mother thread here, some anons were talking about what PK Beam would be like. Some suggested it might be a laser or plasma beam since Lloyd's guns are equivalent to PK Beam alpha and beta and others suggested that it would have been more like a microwave beam because of how mechanical enemies resist it.

I think I like the PSI powers better if they're always represented by trippy, geometric flashes.

A favorite example of mine, is that instead of the game just merely drawing flames over an enemy when you use psi fire. You have an assault of bright red lines and shapes, with sound effects that vaguely sound like a roaring flame. It's actually really creative, IMO and it fits the the more psychedelic style of Earthbound over the more traditional effects other JRPGs would likely use.

I also really love the sound effect for PK Beam in Mother 1. It really makes me think of a large beam whistling down range at a high speed.

Things like psychokinesis or telepathy are things that are actually studied in the real world, so I don't think it's exclusive to Gyiyg's race. It could be, however, the reason why Ninten got such powers himself.
I haven't played Mother 1 in a while, but I don't remember if it specifically refers to George stealing "PSI" from the aliens, or just technology in general (which would explain the creation of EVE, which can fight 1 on 1 against Gyiyg's most powerful robots)
