Objectively speaking, which is the best version to play? The SEGA CD version seems to have a ton of SOUL.

>> No.6880372

The non meme answer is actually Saturn, the Playstation version uses a really bad soundfont.

I'm torn which version of Lunar 2 to play.
I played Saturn's original, but there's no english hack for second one and playing on PSX is just, you know...
And I fear that going back to SCD version will feel like too much of downgrade and will spoil the game.

I play the ps1 versions. They emulate perfectly. Sega CD was my first experience with lunar tho. Like 25-26 years ago...yikes. I haven't played the Sega CD versions in many years. If course the gba and psp versions are weak.

Sega CD hands down.

>>6880372
The remakes for both Saturn and PS are inferior to the originals. Silver Star doesn't suffer as badly but Eternal Blue is night and day.

>>6880412
Sega CD version of Lunar 2 has more animations (doors on Sega CD animate while opening, remake the door sprite just disappears etc) and music tracks, certain sections were completely reworked and so much worse.

Illusion Woods is a great example. Sega CD version it's a forest of huge trees with hidden passages in the trunks that lead to underground tunnels.

In the remake that area is just a lazy hedge maze with some bushes you move out of the way. This example stands out but the whole game is like that. Towns like Raculi late in the game that had their own interesting aesthetics got reworked to just re-use assets from earlier towns.

I still don't know if something happened to GameArts in between versions or if it's because they farmed out part of the development to another studio but the result was an incredible let down.

>> No.6881262

>>6881094
I agree with this for Eternal Blue because the original is excellent and the remake doesn't improve anything (and actually makes some things worse) but the original Silver Star is pretty rough around the edges.

>but the original Silver Star is pretty rough around the edges.
In what sense? I like how it plays actually faster than the 32-bit remake, and also sprite-based cutscenes have more soul than FMV ones. I like the music on Sega CD better, too.

Other than the audio fidelity, what does the PS1 screw up?

>> No.6881292

>>6881267
Some of this is personal preference but in no particular order, Silver Star's color palette puts me off. It's always pushing drab browns and greens like a 1970s furnished basement. It's a stark difference when compared to Eternal Blue. It also suffers from something a lot of the more amateurish RPGs of the day did where you'd run into a boss fight that is impossible if you don't have a certain spell but once you earn that spell it's a joke. The fire spell dog boss fight is an example of this. The game also has weird pacing in the dungeons. You don't really get the sense a boss is coming. You just sort of walk into it and *boom* boss fight. I like the game a lot, it's just the remake brings a lot to the table, which is more than I can say for Eternal Blue's remake.

>> No.6881310

>>6881248
The worst thing about the remake of Eternal Blue in my opinion is how off model the FMVs are. Can't really say much about Silver Star (Story) because the first game's "FMV" barely qualifies as animation but Eternal Blue had very nice looking video by Sega CD standards. Then the remake comes along and everyone's face looks fucked up.

Oh, and also I like how Silver Star Story brought the first game's mechanics in line with Eternal Blue's, which I love. Mechanically it feels tighter and more unique than the way Alex just seemingly arbitrarily was a fire mage in the original.

Not only do the new cinematics look weird in their style, Working Designs didn't re-record most of the dialogue even though the new animation frequently doesn't match up with the original. I don't know of the Japanese version is the same but it's laughably terrible how lazy it is.

I've only played all the ports of Silver Star but play the Sega CD or Saturn depending on the feel you want. Sega CD has random spawning enemies while you can avoid in Saturn. Sega CD has a cool "greenish blue" retro vibe and is way more basic, you can probably beat it way faster. Saturn is basically the game at its peak. GBA port is shitty but I have feels for it cause it was how I first played the game. The PSP port isn't bad if you want a more "advanced" version, but it lacks the pure soul of the CD and Saturn versions. There is no reason to play the PS1 version just a shitty version of the Saturn.

Yeah the GBA port is by UbiSoft but somehow it's even worse. It's like they tried to make it as opposite to the WD version as possible and the result is that it's incredibly bland. It feels like they just ran the text through google translate and had an intern half heartedly fix some syntax. I don't like Ireland's translations.
