The Saturn version of Twinkle Star Sprites actually sells over the Dreamcast and PS2 ports for the extra character, anime intro and ending and fan disc filled with goodies.
The Sat version of Gunbird does as well.
You shouldn't even bother with the Arcade version of Game Tengoku as it's missing like half the levels which are Saturn exclusive.
The Saturn version of DoDonpachi has an extra level. The Saturn versions of Psykyo games have way superior arranged soundtracks.

the leading method is to boot games with an action replay cart flashed with pseudo saturn kai. most games can be burned as they were dumped and just werk with this method, a few need patches, but i don't think anything is completely unplayable.
modchips are also available, but they don't defeat the region lock alone, so most people do a region-free BIOS mod to go along with them. this is more expensive and involved for little gain so don't bother unless the softmod gives you inexorable issues.

The only people who play PAL versions of non-PAL developed games are people in PAL countries who only play the games they have since they were kids, no one really goes out of their way to get these versions otherwise except maybe collectors.
Either way, it's more expensive to buy a PAL Saturn than to get a Japanese Saturn and a PicoPSU-based replacement PSU for 220-240v. The same is true for US Saturns I think, and then you don't even have to replace the PSU since it's the exact same one used in the US versions even if the outer case only says 100v.

>> No.6874663

>>6874612
Actually the game in OP's would be a great example as to why you'd want to play the PAL version. It's optimized, has differences compared to the NTSC version, and is the fastest version to speedrun due to reasons.

>> No.6874686

>>6874663
>It's optimized
I highly doubt it performs better than the 60hz version since it wasn't developed in a PAL country. If you're referring to it running at approximately the same speed in 50hz as in 60hz, that's not really an advantage sine the only reason games were ever converted from 60hz to 50hz to begin with was because some poorfags were using ancient TVs that didn't support 60hz even into the 90s. It was done for the same reason that RF adapters were included into the 7th generation pretty much.
Even games developed in PAL countries are not necessarily better in their PAL versions even if they run at the same speed. The Wipeout games for example, they're very high-speed so you get more out of the extra 5 to 10 frames per second than the extra resolution. Only strategy games are consistently better in PAL, but you'd usually want to play the computer versions of those anyway unless it's some oddball console exclusive.
>has differences compared to the NTSC version
What differences are those? Is it something that can be considered pretty much objectively better?
>and is the fastest version to speedrun due to reasons.
But different versions are usually considered to be separate games for speedrunning purposes. The only exception I can think of is Goldeneye where time is usually still counted using the in-game timer and the PAL version somehow runs at the wrong speed even though it was developed in the UK.

>> No.6874868

>>6874686
The aspect ratio is correct, and the speed of everything is correct except for the firing rate of the two hitscan weapons which is a bit slower; but whether or not that's a conversion issue or not remains to be proven considering the PAL is actually an earlier version despite being released later (longer releasing window)

The UK is where the game sold the most and they knew that would be the case before the fact due to the reception and exposition they got from UK magazines, so they put extra care into it compared to the majority of 50hz versions of American/Japanese games

There are item placement differences, you're given a lot less hp/ammo refills

Some level design differences and a couple of glitches only present in that version

PALfag here, this is correct, when i was a kid, i didn't know any better, pal games were what was available, i had nothing to compare them to, so stuttering fmvs (from lazy 30>25fps conversion) and black bars (from lazy 480>576 conversion) were just the norm to me
since getting the internet and learning how to download/burn games, i've only gotten ntsc copies, because why wouldn't i? any pal tv made after the 80's can take an ntsc signal, and most consoles can run or be made to run an ntsc game

ps. i don't think PAL itself is inferior to NTSC, it has its advantages, i'm only concerned about the fact that most games are made for NTSC, and rarely get more than the bare minimum to shove them onto PAL (and they suffer for it)

Zwei's definitely the superior rail shooter, hard to not be considering how barebones 1 was in terms of features. Saga's probably my favorite though--It's just such a strange game for the time. One year after FF7 dropped, Team Andromeda had a fully-voiced JRPG that was designed out of consideration for people who disliked the tedium of JRPGs (like Futatsugi), that almost didn't get released stateside because of Sega's refocusing onto the Dreamcast.

They're all bizarre games with interesting visuals, solid soundtracks, and fun gameplay.

My last job tried to get me do be a team lead. The offer was would you like to stop playing game boy and reading for an additional .50 cents an hour? It was a tantalizing offer but I had to decline. When I had the opportunity to teach the new employee class I did hop on that. I got a room that I controlled the thermostat and I could put on videos and go outside or hide in the bathroom and do whatever. That was awesome but corporate changed the way hiring in worked.

And fortunately enough for me I am exactly autistic enough to drag in a monitor and Sega Saturn. I'm not the only person playing games on a laptop here so it won't be too odd. The real autism was the idea I had to build a mobile GAME STATION in a harbor freight apache case so I can just drag that thing in here and plug in one cord and be ready to go. I believe our internet connection is fast enough I could start streaming on Twitch. Well, for video games 60hz is generally better since most games benefit more from 5 to 10 extra frames than the extra resolution. PAL is definitively better for actual TV transmissions though since films have always been in only 24fps anyway.
>>6877379
I always hated how PAL releases were always delayed so much right into the 7th generation so that German people could pretend they didn't lose WW2. Either way, for most RPGs there are now patches to make the PAL versions run in 60hz while retaining all the languages.

Yes, it's very near perfect. Came out AFTER the Dreamcast port, and the devs spent way longer making it just right. Uses the 4MB RAM expansion so there are no compromises on graphical or audio fidelity.

It gets better in 2, they add a number of cool elements, such as:
- A dialog choice leading up to the battle results in one of two tactical approaches to the battle (the amount this changes things differs per battle, but sometimes even results in a totally different map)
- Receiving assistance from supporting characters, like sabotaging an enemy's equipment, or disabling barriers
- Choosing between four different "battle formations" when controlling Ogami, to receive a boost to speed, damage, or defense (at cost to the other two)

The Game Paradise is an awesome shmup for the system. Played on Original Hardware, but sadly my first Saturn and games are in storage in another state rn. However I’ve got a second Saturn from Japan and a MODE coming in, so I’m excited to play a ton more Saturn Games than I’d ever be able to afford on my JVC TM-H150CG CRT monitor with the RGB input card. Gonna has a fuckin blast.

Burned disc with english hack.
It's also can just freeze while one of the loadings. Freezes become significantly less after I found old writer and reburned disc on 4x instead of 16x (why newer drives only support insane speeds as a minimum I don't understand).

I think, it's because my VA0 model gets very hot and laser's performance diminish.

That could be it, that happens to my white Model 2 as well. When the unit is warm it has more trouble recognizing a burned disc.

It happens with later revisions too? Strange, Sega went cheap.

You're not missing a whole lot from Daisenryaku relative to other turn-based WWII strategy games unless its simplicity is part of the appeal for you. They're decent games; it's just that there's so much better on the PC.

In that case it is worth trying. Try Mednafen; it can be demanding to emulate sometimes but Iron Storm definitely does not push the system very far so it should be playable (but you may want to disable the 3D battle scenes)

This one isn't too obscure but you won't be seeing it on any quick recommendations. Long running series "Far East of Eden" or Tengai Makyou. This is Tengai Makyou IV The Apocalypse. It's a satirical RPG, this one in particular being about Eastern stereotypes of the West. Possibly one of the best manual covers of all time, the actual case cover is a series of rusty crosses against a blood red sky filled with crows.
