I've got to say you got an interesting style of using vanilla textures, you mix seemingly unfitting textures together and it somehow works out great. The difficulty was just right, maybe you could make it a bit harder. Maybe add an Archvile to the last fight since you get so much ammo for it. I like the Cyberdemon fight setup, but I think you could do more with it. Perhaps make the holes in the arena not do damage, but instead lower low enough you can't get out for a while. This might be either a good or a terrible idea though. I didn't realize the map concept at first, but I was impressed once I've noticed it.

>> No.6874350

>>6874336
I'm comitted to using Doom 2 format for this project so I can't do any complex voodoo scripting. Also trapping player like this next to a cyberdemon is not very nice. The last fight yeah, probably could use an arch-vile. I removed a few monsters originally because it was too crowded, but didn't think about adding a vile.

Is there a setting that lets me use the 5.8.0 and earlier colors? It's not a huge enough deal that I'd go back to an outdated version but I was used to it and the new colors, even if they are closer to vanilla, feel weird now. I liked the softer-on-the-eyes walls of pic

Very nice map, I'd say right away I loved the concept of the same map having two verisons - base and hell - and switching between them. Nice midi choice, it suited the action well
There was a little bit too much ammo around the whole map(I used rockets frequently with little regard for stock, but maybe that was the intention), and the cyberdemon fight was a bit undynamic, since there was not much space and cover to fight him - he forced me into the map corner(pic related) so I had to play peakaboo with him
The final fight was cool too, if a bit too tight spacewise, I somehow retreated and could snipe the last enemies from pic related.
Also loved archvile placement through the map, no monster inspires as much fright as that lanky motherfucker. It really added challenge and emotion to the map to have him pop up once in a while near a large pile of resurrectable bodies
Final verdict: solid map, needs work only on ammo placement and cyberdemon encounter maybe? Good work anon.

Pickup Flashes is the one thing in old fps game I hate the most

picking up an item then flashes on the screen, imagine picking up a ton of item and have the flashes go out like this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ggi7dL4qMw

is there a way to turn off pick up flashes in quakespasm as well as Eduke 32

Glad GZDoom can turn off pick up flashes, but you have to do that via console

Pickup Flash Intensity (0.0—1.0, by 0.05 increments)
pickup_fade_scalar
Controls the intensity of the screen flash effect upon picking up items. Higher values increases the intensity while lower values decreases it. Setting this to 0, disables the effect.

When you get the railgun I think. There's also power armor that uses BFG ammo which also makes you unstoppable. Weirdly you have to actually equip it manually. The game doesn't mention it.

Can't lie about the overall meh feeling of Quake II single player and it's dumb AI, but trying to play it speed run style going really fast helps make things a lot more interesting.

Overall though it was an era where multiplayer online gaming was just starting to become available to many, so you can't really talk about the Quake series without leaning heavily on the multiplayer experience.

Thing about Quake was, when it was released it was so innovative that there was no proper infrastructure for modders, like 3D modelling software and such. By the time such infrastructure was developed, modders just moved onto more modern 3D games (both TF and CS started out as Quake modes, for example). People working with 2D sprites, on other hand, had nowhere to go - Build was much less mod-friendly at start, and then ZDoom came and blew it out the water. Mapping-wise, 2.5D mapping has lower entry barrier and Doom has great map editors, which leads to more people trying to dabble at Doom mapping.

eh i'm not the sperg shitposting about difficulty, so thanks for the reply. It's something I am interested in discussing and not shitposting or being elitist about.
>rather than keep track whether they died from it or not
But why would you want to keep track? To maybe save 1 rocket? Isn't part of the fun of a shooting/action game the unpredictable nature of combat? Surely the difference between you visually noticing something or the fight being so frantic that you miss something is part of the fun and attributes to the chaos and adrenaline of combat.
Seems unnecessary to rape the immersion in pursuit of efficiency.
Maybe i'm wrong but all of this information that action games freely hand out is a result of nearly all modern vidya into a skinnerbox. It's like all this "stealth" vidya that lets you just see enemies through walls. Looking at your screenshot, you've even got every enemy on a radar, which is practically the same thing. You're robbed of any surprise or anything unpredictable that could arise from the game naturally.
If I was to speculate, i'd say you play modern AAA games and you're addicted to Operant conditioning and as a result you're trying to import it into other games.

IIRC there is Chocolate Heretic, Chocolate Hexen, Chocolate Strife, Crispy Heretic, Crispy Hexen, and Crispy Strife. Heretic and Hexen used to be playable from Chocolate Doom and Crispy Doom the same way that GZDoom can play all the IWADs. I don't know why they were branched out into their own source ports. Chocolate Heretic is its own source port, but to use Crispy Heretic, you need Crispy Doom; you place the crispy-heretic executable inside the Crispy Doom folder.

One great thing about Chocolate/Crispy is that it can play the SC-55 music packs:
You need to unzip the files into a folder such as "C:\Games\Doom\Music-Packs" then edit the .cfg files of each source port to look for the music packs in that folder. You will also need to download and place the music pack's configuration files inside that folder as well. The download link for that is on the right-hand side of the page linked above. For your convenience, this is the download page for the music pack configuration files - https://github.com/chocolate-doom/music-packs . Click on the green box that says "Code" and select "Download as ZIP" and extract the contents into the folder. Everything should look like pic related when done.

Here is a how-to guide on setting it up if you need more help: https://www.chocolate-doom.org/wiki/index.php/Digital_music_packs

>> No.6880835

>>6880650
>only ways
You're forgetting DOSBox. You need the original executables in order to run the game through DOSBox, however. Here is a download link with dozens of games:
The download is over 1 gig and most of the games you will not play but this download is still handy because it contains the original DOS executables for Heretic, Hexen, and Duke 3D. It also has the original executables for Quake, Blood, and Doom, but for those games, it's better to get the GOG versions; the GOG Quake DOS download comes with the original music, unlike this download, and the GOG Blood download comes with the movies, unlike this download, and you can configure DOS Blood to play the MIDIs instead of the CD music.

If you go the DOS route, I recommend you copy-paste the folder from this download into a new folder, such as C:\DOSGames\Duke3D , and run the game through a fork of DOSBox called "DOSBox pixel-perfect" because this fork contains integer scaling, which looks great. Hopefully you can figure out how to run the game through the DOSBox fork by analyzing how the DOSpack is configured. Basically, just copy-paste the configuration file from the DOS Anon pack into your DOSBox pixel-perfect folder, and learn how to launch the game through DOSBox. You can have DOSBox automatically mount the appropriate drive by typing the commands at the end of the DOSBox configuration file. To learn more about how to launch games through DOSBox watch videos on youtube. These are the commands at the very end of my config file:
>mount D: D:\
>D:
And from there I type
>cd duke3d
>duke3d
Or whichever game I want to play

I'm going to try to use sprites for enemies/objects, so they can use two palettes of their own (each 8x8 tile would be restricted to one palette though, so I think using 2 palettes, and each object/enemy restricted to one of those two palettes, or maybe reusing the HUD palette, would be best).

Chocolate Doom comes with aspect ratio correction; DOSBox does not.

The original Doom was designed in 320x200 but was meant to be vertically stretched 20% in a CRT monitor. Nowadays, if you play Doom, your modern source port will correct the aspect ratio and stretch everything vertically by 20% for you. If you play in DOSBox everything will be horizontally stretched, pic related.

I believe the Chaingun sprite was based on the Tootsie Toy American West Gatling Gun and not the "Ol' Painless" gatling gun model which is commonly claimed. The barrel design is closer to the first-person sprite and the body might have been inspiration for the odd boxy shape of the pickup sprite.

I'm no expert, but I think that when doing room over room this way, it's important that the 'underground' sectors don't share any vertices with 'aboveground' ones in places where there aren't any stairs/passages between them. A single point on the 2D map can only be occupied by a single vertex, so I think some vertices of your upper and lower sector snapped to each other when you moved them in place, resulting in impossible geometry
