Recently got around to playing this and all my life I have been lied to, this game is actually pretty fun and pretty good.

I remember I got my N64 second-hand back in the day and it came with LoD among other games. It was the first one I tried and honestly I was extremely put off with the controls and general gameplay; were you supposed to have played C64 before to ease you into the game?

What's wrong with the controls honestly? I see others saying that a lot as a major complaint, but I haven't had any problems with them aside from grabbing ledges. A slight nitpick I have is that the running slide is a bit slow. Other than that, I haven't had any issues with the camera either as it always centers when I press the R button or I can easily shift it to where I need it by walking around.

The game isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, but it is guilty of a few flaws that drag it down from being a genuine classic. It's beginning is fairly weak and there could be more to the level design and enemies, but the core gameplay is solid and it does get more enjoyable as the game progresses. I don't necessarily think there's anything wrong with the formula of this game or how it was structured and most of the flaws or gripes I have with the game come from small nitpicks or presentation issues like textures or fog. It's definitely not Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time, but for what the game is I think it was a fairly enjoyable experience even if it wasn't all that challenging.

if it wasnt called castlevania people would probably not have given it so much shit

Even so, I don't think it tarnishes the Castlevania name that badly considering games like Simon's Quest and The Adventure are just as unpolished. And the gameplay is actually an extremely faithful adaptation of 2D Castlevania gameplay made in 3D, structured around somewhat linear levels with platforming and combat challenges. No backtracking, upgrades, stats, etc. I'm being entirely genuine. I had a good time and I wouldn't mind seeing another Castlevania like this or other games with similar attempts. Could just be I'm a sucker for action horror too.

I've been playing through a lot of N64 games and I had actually put this one off for awhile because of how bad it's reputation was.

Pretty much what I thought. It is how Castlevania going into the 3D realm should be. Just that the camera and controls can be rough at times.

Not all critics panned it as well. Game was bound to not live up to its potential due to that generations general control jank for 3D games.

It's the small interactions too, but I enjoyed Reinhardt much more as a character than Alucard despite there being less text and overall character moments than Symphony of the Night. I really wish there could be a DX version or "complete" version of what Castlevania 64 should of been.

It's the only 3Dvania that actually feels like CastleVania in 3D, at least.

You must be joking. Also, Simon's Quest is a good game.

It's a decent game hampered by a shitty camera and that stupid part with the nitro and mandragora but other than that it gets more shit than it deserves. Not the best Castlevania by a long stretch but it feels more like Castlevania than some of the later 3D games.
