Let's have your 10 favorite games of all time /vr/.

>> No.685081

Top ten lists are lazy bullshit. Why not just have a thread where you share your personal experiences with your favorite games? Then you'd have substance and actual content and not just a bunch of arbitrary numbered lists that mean nothing.

It's also a bad sign when the OP doesn't contribute to the thread in the OP.

It's actually better for the OP to provide a topic without inserting his own opinions for a thread like this; otherwise the entire thread will be filled with sporadic "ur opinion is shit" comments.

Oh, so much better. I mean, look how this thread turned out: three real replies, and they're all just lists with zero context and zero effort. And one of them was probably by the OP when he realized his thread was sinking.

Good job on the awesome thread here.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo [Arcade]
>Timeless look, sound and characters. Fast paced, fundamental fighting and is still played to this day.
Super Mario Bros. 3 [NES]
>Varied worlds and levels, great co op fun, looks and sounds awesome and added tons to the mario formula
Blackthorne [SNES]
>Visually impressive, "think before you act" gameplay. Later levels are some of the most ridiculous puzzles in a platformer (in a good way).
Demon's Crest [SNES]
>Godlike OST, amazing graphics, Mega Man style character switching. Tons of secrets, hard but rewarding difficulty.
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask [N64]
>Took Zelda in a completely new direction, original world, fleshed out characters, beautiful and haunting OST. Sacrificed the amount of dungeons for a filled out world. Just getting to a dungeon is like a dungeon in itself.

Only doing 5, it's less of a tedious number. Also mentioned something about why I like them.

>> No.685324

>>685303

Except that this is a discussion board, anon. What exactly is the purpose of a thread where each person posts a random vague list of games for the sake of posting a vague list of games? The most you can get out of people is either

- Agreeing (eg. MAH NIGGA)
- Disagreeing (>'x' game, >not 'y' game)

And then silence. all while pushing off prematurely threads that actually have the potential for discussion.

By choosing NOT to justify your list, or further elaborate on why you like the games on your list, you're pretty much admitting that your post was ultimately worthless and that it was a waste of time making it.

Don't know if I should remove HL and SMW but they were both two of the most defining games I ever played. SMW was a huge part of a my childhood but I appreciate that there have been superior platformers since. Unfortunately I haven't owned a Nintendo console since the N64.

Can't decide what to add to number 10. maybe Max Payne 3.

CS1.6, MK64, Zelda LA, Dark Souls, Brutal Doom II, Blood and Vice City are definitely my favourite games of all time though, bar none.

Descent (original) - grew up playing this online and have countless hours invested in it. This is as close to perfect as it gets for me, and there's nothing like the fusion cannon. D2 was ok, but retarded shit like the gauss ruined it for me. D3 was just awful: homing everything, terrible physics, etc.
Quake (qw, q2, q3a) - grew up playing these games online too and it's too hard to pick a favorite honestly. I still think q2 was great despite the hate for it, and that all the qw/nq guys were wrong about it.
LttP - amazing game, always fun to replay
Guilty Gear - great memories of playing with friends and to me it's the best fighting game series ever. I still play #R on GGPO and AC+ on PSN.
FFVI - not much to say about it other than I love RPGs and this was a great one

Some are non /vr/ games but so be it
>UT2k4
The unreal series is my favourite series of all time, the theme, music and atmosphere it creates as well as the crisp dodging mechanics just shoot it to the top for me.
>Star wars battlefront II
I love the universe, great multiplayer and it was like being in the films for me.
>Tetris on gameboy
All the hours i've thrown into this, its hard to say why but it's just fantastic
>The Warriors
Based on a film i loved, with music i adore and some brutal fighting which stayed just within the limits of realism (and my friends could never beat me at it)
>Gran Turismo 3
I love cars and if not for GT3 i wouldnt have discovered that.
>Road Rash Jaibreak
Great arcade-y racer and punching people off their motorbikes never got old, still play it today.
>Crash Team Racing
Better than Mario Kart, I just wish i got the sequel it deserved, not Crash Nitro Kart
>Wolfenstein 3D
Spent many years trying to beat my mums score but never could, had lots of fun trying and it was my first ever FPS
>Hogs of War
Hard to explain, I love the humour and the weapons but i think it takes the throne from worms because of the ability to use bunkers, pillboxes and parachutes
>Hidden and Dangerous 2
Always been into WWII games and this was a cut above the rest, you choose loadouts, select the members of your squad all with unique stats, you could do missions alone or with a team and had to use a mix of stealth and action to follow through to the end. It was permadeath so if you lost a team member they were dead for good and you'd have to find a way to spread their gear between who is left and at times would have to equip the enemy uniforms to get in unseen.
Theres too much to say about this one, only game on the list other than UT2k4 that i'd give a 10/10 to

This so much. I can't tell how long and how many times traveling back to the first day it took me to figure out certain sequences. I could go on and on about this game, it's my favorite zelda without a doubt.
>dem underlying themes
I couldn't fully understand this game as an eleven year-old but it gave me this feel that no other game did before. It makes you focus on the characters that otherwise would be unimportant and makes you feel for them and whats going on even though you should be completely uninvolved. Even though I was the hero and the fucking world was ending I was never really the center of attention. This game was more about helping other people come to terms before their eminent destruction and as a result helped me come to terms with my own. 5 stages of grief etc etc
I know this all sounds gay and touchy feely but I'm drunk and muh video game feels are coming out. Oh well back to r9k

I'd suggest making at least a little descriptions why, because no one wants to read plain lists of games.
Also I'm surprised how hard it is to come up with a list like that.

Here we go:

1. Silent Hill 1

Basically for making me immune to horror games. I think I was 10-12 when I completed it for the first time and yes, that made me one of those annoying guys that call Amnesia walking simulator and laugh at people actually scared by Slenderman. Sorry. :)

2. Silent Hill 2

For being one of the very few games, that made me want to cry like a little girl (my first ending was "In Water")

3. Quake 1

Yes, DN3D and Doom were both great, but there is only one old shooter I replay every year and still love it.

4. Gothic 2 with expansion and Fallout 1&2

They are not the best rpg games out there, they have many bugs that make them really easy, but there is something making them great and fun to replay. The atmosphere, not holding player's hand, no quest compass, freedom.

5.Planescape Torment

For being the second game that made me shed a tear and provoking thinking about really serious things.

6.Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crisis & Resistance

For being first real "open world" tactical game and making your every single fault deadly. Oh and the ending of Reistance was pretty sad.

7. System Shock 2, Deus Ex and Mafia 1

I don't think I have to say anything here

8. Commandos 1

For showing that frustration may feel good.

9.Syberia & The Longest Journey

The best modern adventure games.

10.C&C : TD, TS, RA1, RA2

Because they are my favourite RTS games to this day.

That's pretty much it, I could still make some honorable mentions though, like Splinter Cell CT, Thief, Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, Supaplex and the list could easily go forever, so I'm going to stop here.

Oh and one question - do you guys really think that games like Pokemon or Zelda are this good or it is just nostalgia and wanting to look hardcore/old?

shit, forgot link to the past as well

>>690734
yes, pokemon is really good, it's just that the old faithful formula is old now, and we're all getting a bit tired of it.
as for zelda, i played link to the past a few years ago, and it's one of the best i've ever played, so it can't be nostalgia.

In no particular order:

Dragon Quest V
I liked the story , even if it is cliche, who did care? What matters is how you tell the story and DQV did it in a very touching way

Grandia
Well it was quite a long game when it came out, it also has good mechanics, i remember the game box said something like "Over 1 hour of FMV !" and that was a big feature then

Ninja Gaiden (Turbografx>NES>SNES)
I don't know why but i find myself playing this game often when i don't know what else to play
like a default option , good for playing with a bro

DKC2
Best music and level design of the DKC games

AoE 2
It's a shame o can't put Empire Eart there since it's 2001

Crash Bandicoot 2
Well its crash

Silent Hill
Already explained by >>690734

Final Fantasy Tactics
Still have to find a game with more replay value, the story didn't impress me but the whole end chapter was great, i thought it was just going to end with everyone living happily ever after

Conker's Bad Fur Day
The funniest game i ever played

Perfect Dark
Those weapons are amazing ,and the missions are thrilling, and those perfectly chosen difficulty levels omg, having to take down the hovercopter on datadyne extraction was very exciting,
