Yes, it's a good game and there's not many platformers that play like it. Great level design with lots of interesting secrets too. But Super Mario Bros. 2 is better for the reasons >>6867671 mentioned.

Doki Doki Panic was made for the Famicom Disk System in Japan, and was never released on a cartridge. Also, interesting to point out that Super Mario Bros. 2 Japan (Lost Levels) was also released on the Disk System as well. Doki Doki Panic probably would have been unearthed as some sort of 'lost classic' though emulation. But the game itself would have never been released outside of Japan. Because the characters were mascots for a large Expo event in Japan. The characters would have had to be changed regardless for the west.
