honestly there's something special about the exact historical moment of 9/11
in the middle of the internet age - even after the dotcom crash - but before the internet was with us 24/7. the people in the towers got their last messages out by phone calls, not video calls, internet messaging services, etc, and the public response was for the most part very localized - with your family, your friends, etc. the internet wasn't the massive thing it would later become, and even where people did discuss it live (the SomethingAwful thread where they do is archived somewhere) it's not exactly the same as it would be nowadays, where you'd have 10 9/11 threads on 4chan and everyone on Twitter would be talking about it.

Some people died and it took a while to recognize that - there's a page about furries who worked in the WTC and what their status is for example - while in the modern age half the people who died in the towers would've put up a message on their own social media saying that they were there. 9/11 is one of the last major tragedies to impose that kind of distance between the people directly suffering the tragedy and the public who're witnessing it. What it must have been like in the towers is almost unimaginable. Isolated and cut off from the world in the middle of New York City. That wouldn't really happen nowadays: We'd have pictures from the towers, even people risking their lives to get better pictures.
And of course, a few more people could've survived: You wouldn't have the sad stories of the people who went up the only functioning staircase expecting a helicopter rescue when they may have survived if they'd gone down it, for example.
