I always used to steamroll this as Yang. Don't bother making military unless you absolutely have to, just make a former then focus on throwing out colony pods until you hit the cap(512 cities, between all factions).

For terraforming, always make forests on arable squares, mines on mountains. By the time you need more food, you should have made it to hybrid forests. No roads ever, so any invasion has to inch across your territory while you churn out a vast army to repel and then annihilate them.

For fun, construct a pressure dome, an elite empath chopper and an ocean former in every city. Then build factories of every kind and watch the planet flip its shit as sea levels skyrocket and your enemies are drowned or their cities starve as the AI tries to work out what the fuck. Use the choppers to cull mindworms for loot. Remember that you can't extract resources from xenofungus that's below -1000m, so be sure to use the "Sell all facilities of this type" option if things get hairy. I once got about 3000m of sea level rise, built so many ocean formers to try and keep resources where I could get at them that I hit the unit cap(1024).
Dammit, micromanaging a desperate terraforming effort to avert apocalyptic disaster was one of the greatest bits of fun I had with this game. Almost as good as the time I equipped all my hovertanks with chemical weapons and proceeded to rack up ten thousand years of sanctions as I steamrolled Morgan.

>I mean how the fuck can someone screw that up

I guess we're about to find out?

And for all this "original team" stuff that's floating around KS, i don't really buy into it. Don't get me wrong, they might be great at what they do but when you look at what the old gods are doing these days, Sid, Will, Brian etc etc, i'd say that the old guard has rusted together.

They are making money, not trying to please the "old guard" gamers. There are lots of kids who will spend their parents money on the games they are currently developing. I can't imagine anyone today (of our age at the time) who spends days to understand how a game works and try mastering it.

>> No.686378

If they keep losing or takes them more than 10 minutes to understand it, they call it shit and move to the next.

I want to try this game. I've been a huge Civ1 fan and Civ3 a lot later. Is it kinda similar? Is it easy to get into without using guides and stuff. Do i need to use and emulator to play it?

>They are making money

Yeah, that's sort of what i'm saying. That the "original team" is in on it doesn't really mean shit to me these days. I'd rather have a fresh new team straight out of college doing something new.

You'll probably need Dosbox, google it. Really easy to use and the basic set-up should do for almost everyone.

It was made for Win98, there's a WinXP patch, and I'm pretty sure the GOG version should work on even more modern systems.

>Publisher EA are apparently out to reclaim the gaming territory known as Alpha Centauri after reports from various sources that the publisher has applied for the trademark to produce “entertainment services, namely, providing an on-line computer game,” as well as for “computer game software” based on the IP.
>Hopes are high that EA are looking to bring the game back in some way, either as a full-blown 4X sequel, a re-boot, or perhaps as a version for one of those popular social networking websites. (We know which one we’d prefer). Of course it could just be that EA want to mark their territory in case some one else tries to take it from them.

Once the world is flooded and nobody can do shit, you've got carte blanche to do what you want. I'd often murder everyone down to one last, barricade them in with twenty units around their city so they starve down to one pop, crank up happiness and food production, watch my population explode(Cloning Vats, Cloud Academy, Telepath Matrix, Orbital Farms out the arse) until the very last turn I possibly could, then rush the Ascent. Scores of 15000% were not uncommon.

I hated Alien Crossfire. The original game was so perfect, with such amazing worldbuilding and that setting and the original factions were so great

All the added factions were totally pointless, they were either needless retreads of the original factions (gaians but CRAZY! hive but MORESO!) or just didn't jive well. It felt cluttered where the first game felt elegant.

>> No.689647

>>687976
Alien Crossfire features seven new factions (two that are non-human), new technologies, new facilities, new secret projects, new alien life forms, new unit special abilities, new victory conditions (including the new "Progenitor Victory") and several additional concepts and strategies.

They were integrated ok thought. Doesn't feel cluttered here.
