So I recently got this game in a huge lot of unopened PC games, and it is the only one that looked remotely interesting to me, but I have never played a DnD game other than the table top game.

This looks to be a hybrid somewhat of a traditional JRPG like Etrian Odyssey or SMT, and a top down arpg like Diablo.

What am I in for when I commit to ten straight hours of this tomorrow? I have played a bit of Baldur's Gate, and liked it, but from what I gather, this is quite a bit different. My favorite RPGS are Etrian Odyssey IV and Torchlight 2

Oh, and Baldur's Gate engine games general I suppose.

Has nobody played it? I was under the impression it was somewhat popular. It has gotten good ratings across the board.

I played Icewind Dale II and got about halfway through the game by being lucky as shit. I never understood the levelling system and couldn't even figure out how to use the magic my mage character had.

I know that there must be a way but I was fairly young at the time and couldn't be damned to read the instructions. Take your time, OP. If it's like the second one, character creation is important to look into because you can create hybrid classes that can be useless unless you know what you're doing.

Try and find a copy of the manual online. I have the manual here for the second game, but for some reason I can't find the discs.

It's called the infinity engine. IWD is a straight up dungeon crawler, with a heavy dose of atmosphere. The music is amazing.

Yeah. It is my favorite in the series. This is generally how I go about naming characters in RPGs, I name my party leader, Hyde and make him a grizzled old man, and then the rest of the party is named after characters from my favorite games, comics, and movies.

Nada, unlike Baldur's Gate, there isn't an awful lot of plot and dialog. Icewind Dale puts a lot of emphasis on combat and such.

Also, I'm going to say this; earlygame in AD&D style games, ranged weapons are king. Also, learn to use autopause. It will save your life. And save often, it's not uncommon to get slaughtered a few times on the goblins near the town. In fact, it's to be expected.

Icewind Dale is more heavily combat focused than the other infinity engine games. Since this goes by ADnD rules, there's a few things you should know.

*Trolls can ONLY be killed with fire or acid damage. (So bring lots of fire oil for Dragon's Eye)
*THAC0 means "To hit Armor Class 0." That means that if your THAC0 is 15, then you need to roll 15 to hit an enemy with an AC of 0.
*Low AC is better, try to get it below 0. For every point below 0, add 1 to the THAC0 roll, and for every point above 0, subtract one from the THAC0 roll.
*So if your THAC0 is 10, then you would only need to roll 7 if the enemy's AC is 3. Likewise, you would need to roll 13 if the enemy's AC is -3.
*Wizards are fucking amazing later on, and total shit early. Towards the end of the game you'll probably be opening doors, throwing Cloudkill into a room, then closing the door.
*Thieves that can detect traps and pick locks are very valuable, but not necessarily needed with a decent enough wizard.
*SAVE whenever you try to write a scroll into your wizard's spellbook; the writing can fail and some spells only appear once.

But I see how this game is more "combat oriented" than others already. It has just about no plot. It is more like a typical table top game, where it is a quest for some fuckin loot, instead of your typical video game with apocalyptic consequences. Thats just so far though.

I fucking love that game. You are in for a good time if you liked BG2

Combat is omnipresent but there is a fair bit of story and a few puzzle that can be hard. Dialogues are also fucking fun. Just another heads up, make sure you have different damage type. If you dont have crushing weapon at some points you may regret it, same with slashing.

Anyway, enjoy, keep the music up, it's my go to for snowy day (and i live in northern Canada, so listen to it very very often)

never played baldur's gate op? it's the same thing, but more combat and less story. both are great games.

do a balanced party. warrior, mage, cleric, rogue and any fifth wheel you want. if you know D&D you should be well. but keep in mind that it's AD&D, not 3.x. (but IWD2 is 3.0)

pause like a mother fucker. micromanage. always look closely at your party HP, use your rogue to scout with stealth, look for traps.

You should never use a pure classed thief or mage in the first place.
A multi-classed fighter/thief already starts with 11 hp with 18 con and will always have high enough thief skills.
For the mage start him as a human fighter and dual class to a mage at level 3. He will have 24 hp more and can use bows (with 3 weapon profency points) at the cost of only 4000 exp.

Always make sure you have 18 con with every character that has at least one level as either a fighter, paladin and ranger. Other characters only need 16 con but should never have less.

You *can* do this in Icewind Dale 1, but it is harder than in 2, due to the rule changes between AD&D 2.5 (which Icewind Dale 1 uses, IIRC) and 3rd edition (which ID2 uses).
