Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favorite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games. If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

for me, its Racing Battle: C1 Grand Prix, Juiced (which has the evilest difficulty curve and physics ive seen so far, a good atmosphere and a surprisingly nice licensed soundtrack) and SSX3 (it counts as racing, right?)

wacky wheels, I played it like crazy as a kid because we had knock off nintendo and no mario kart. Loads of fun. I have also been looking for a racing game from my childhood. I know it was on a home computer. Open wheel, very early 3d graphics. Cockpit view and the track might have had loop de loops, not sure, it was definitely similar to a rollercoaster if that makes sense but I was very young. This would have been around 1994-1996

I prefer the real Lotus games over the Top Gear ports. And the original Lotus game at that. On the Amiga as the original platform, of course. Best 2D scaling racer ever made, IMO.

But you're right in that Top Gear is the best racing series on SNES. MK is great fun, but it's not really a racing game.

sorry i didn't even get what you meant by that. i guess you mean to take note of your acceleration rate so you know when it's too low and you need to downshift?
>>6803368
i'm no expert myself, i only play manual when the game requires me too (few sims). so once again i provide my amateur advice in hopes of an expert come and correct me :)
but i know the thing is pretty simple, watch your revs or just listen to the sound of the engine, upshift on the optimal spot, for a casual play that would be the same spot for every gear, and downshift at the same revs too. downshifting happens pretty quick tho so you know the number of gears to go down by intuition i guess. optimal spot is usually the red line but you need to look it up for every particular game, and there are in-depth irl guides which can be useful for sims.
there's one arcade game where i played manual too. test drive 5 on psx, and not all the game but only the masters cup. it's brutal and it requires you to use a new car every race. and muscle cars' automatic transmission in that game is awful, like in real life i guess. it downshifts so early while the optimal spot is on the limiter. so manual is even quicker than using auto jump glitch.

I've been playing Project Gotham Racing 2 and I've honestly been having more fun with it than I did MSR on the Dreamcast. I would categorize this as a sim-ish real life circuit bike game, but yes I have. It's a dream that it's basically a two wheel version of GT4, but I have a huge issue with the arrangement and flow of the game. It feels like to unlock/"buy" bikes, you have to do its associated challenge which is basically a cat and mouse duel challenge which is not only frustrating but also really boring. The meat of the game I don't even remember. The best "feeling" modern bike games I can praise right now goes to PGR4, Burnout Paradise, and Driveclub. Looking for alternatives particularly /vr/ ones, of course. I also love pic related.

What is it with raceway tracks in "unconventional" racing games usually being boring as fuck?

I know it's not the same but the race circuits in the first two Flatout games always felt so much more boring than the other tracks.

I think they went for more of a whole-package feel for the High Stakes tracks. I don't see that as especially a bad thing, most of them flow really well and some still have distinct parts like Dolphin Cove, they're just not as immediately memorable as NFS3's. If I had to hazard a third guess, it'd be that 3's tracks are distinctly split up to both make it easier for the alternative routes (Atlantica/Aquatica, Hometown/Country Woods, etc) to fit in, as well as making the piecemeal cop chatter easier to work with by giving the player regular, immediate landmarks to identify. The words, "He's near the covered bridges, going one hundred plus!" are probably still audible in the mind of most people who played NFS3 to this day.

>> No.6839473

>> No.6839494

Fundamentally the tracks in old school NFS (and other games of that period, but lets focus on NFS for now) are all designed around a style of being exotic and mesmerizing. The sort of thing car manufacturers use when promoting their latest and greatest - the super car at the top of a winding mountain road, the SUV atop the rolling sand dunes, the superbike ready to roar down the rural country road etc etc. All tracks with this design goal need not worry about any concept of reality beyond looking cohesive.

The flipside is once you start bringing serious attempts at realism into your design the limits of reality hamper what you can do. The fact that this hypothetical corner would have to be driven at 50mph with extensive crash barriers each side isn't fun in a game when it is about doing 100mph+ through a snowy mountain. Look at it this way - in old school NFS, midnight club or burnout would Brands Hatch actually be fun to drive? The answer is no.

Well put, anon. Not to say real tracks COULDN'T work on an older game- hell, something like Mount Panorama is ridiculous and scenic enough to fit surprisingly well- but man, I miss the sense of style all those old games oozed from every pore. You see those bridges just before the church and Main Street intersection or that Galaxian Jumbotron with its sodium-yellow tunnel passing underneath or what-have-you from your game of choice and there's really nothing like it that cements itself in your brain for decades.

I think its pretty cheap still if youre buying it, def worth it. One thing I would say is that it controls super twitchy with the analog sticks on a DS2, I have a lot better of a time using the dpad. Also some of the story missions to unlock the full soundtrack (which is extremely based btw) you will need to look up an faq for to know what to do unless you can read japanese.

Also, this game has audio glitches with slim ps2s UNLESS youre using the greatest hits/version 2.00

I dislike forza horizon as it is ultimately a sim physics model that dulls the feel of wheels on tarmac as you enable assists to actually deal with the fact it is meant to be played as a wheel controlled autismo sim. I guess my question to you is how arcade do you want to go - are we talking the likes of ridge racer, destruction racer and the like where it is full throttle, powersliding speed all the time or do you want what is considered simcade like old NFS where a solid racing line and correct braking is required?

Try any of Davilex's racing games. Dutch budget brand which I think did well (for a budget dev) in Germany too. I guess they tried in France.
The thing is, making a really bad racing game is really fucking hard. As long as the cars drive and don't glitch into the ground, you're golden. Boring though, that's more of an issue.

Could you expand on why? The game is held in high regard for a reason so i'm curious to hear your reasoning being your dislike. I initially didn't like it but found out it was entirely down to the steering being way, way too sensitive at default. Lowering that made the game a much better experience as turning became much smoother.

Is there any other game with feeling of progression comparable to gran turismo and at least simcade level of realism? What I mean by this is starting with little money buying some cheap shitbox you can probably afford irl and get by tuning it and winning few easy races before moving on to racing cars, lmp, f1 etc. Forza seems like obvious answer but i tried fm7 and it was just so souless for lack of a better word and every other game that's somewhat comparable like for example nfs most wanted era is either too arcadey, is plagued with bullshit like rubberbanding or they hand you supercars right from the start and ruin that sense of progression. Is gran turismo really the only game like this? How the fuck there aren't more clones like it that capture a similar feeling?

>> No.6871135
