Homebrew Atari games=best Atari games. Discuss.

>> No.684916

I wonder what it would take to have homebrew N64 games

>> No.684921

>>684916
I'm sure they're out there, dude. There are even Dreamcast homebrewers out there. I've just never paid much attention to it because I don't play much N64.

You won't be able to do anything elaborate without special tools for designing 3D graphics

>> No.684923

>>684916
more complicated system = more complicated development cycle. eventually someone will program the appropriate tools i'm sure but that won't be for a few years i think.

>> No.684925

>>684923
Atari 2600 has 4k of ROM space and 128 bytes of RAM. Yeah I think there's a difference between that and a 3D console.

>> No.684926

It doesn't change the fact that there ARE N64 homebrews out there. Homebrews in general are hard to find, but I'm absolutely sure it's out there.

But they're probably simplistic 2D games that don't really take advantage of the N64's hardware

Ok, but he was responding to a person talking about the n64. It was slightly on topic because it pertained to homebrew.

Ok fine replace Mario with a 3D model of Applejack

>> No.684947

facepalm.jpg

Do you even understand how 3D games work? The most you could do is reskin Mario with different textures to look like Applejack. Otherwise you'd have to make a totally new character model and put it into the game while praying it doesn't fail checksums or collision detection all so you can satisfy your disgusting clopper fetish.

I own Pepsi Invaders, probably the most bland homebrew ever made..

Yamauchi would be proud.

As for homebrew, why is the NES homebrew scene so fucking bland and crappy? Atari (all platforms) and ColecoVision games are far more impressive than most NES stuff, especially considering their limitations.

The only decent NES homebrew games that I'm aware of are Battle Kid 1 and 2 and the NES port of the flash game STREEMERZ. The latter was made by the Swedish NES prodigy TheFox. That guy is a fucking wizard when it comes to the NES.

I've noticed that, too. I have no idea why there aren't more out there. There's just so much potential, and it really bums me out that there aren't more people out there tapping into it.

>> No.684984

>>684980
Probably because most people would like to make games like "Kill your fucking friends". That's a real game, and it's a 4 player "fighting" game.

Alternatively, Russian programmer Shiru has made a whole slew of simplistic yet well designed NES games. They include Ego Trip and Zooming Secretary, among others.

>> No.684991

>>684984
Does he sell them on carts, or do we have to emulate? Can you link me a site?

I just have this huge dream in my head. There's this flash game in atari style called "Don't Look Back," and it's deep and artsy and minimalistic as shit. I just wish there was someone out there using the NES like that, and making compelling stuff. That's what I want to see.

He doesn't sell them himself, but TheNESDump has his games. Alternatively you can snag them here.

http://shiru.untergrund.net/software.shtml#nes

He made games for a variety of platforms, including old Soviet computers.

Simplistic as they are, they're probably the best homebrew games available.

Also, Japanese homebrew game Blade Buster is quite impressive. Pic related.

Anyways, what are your opinions on Atari homebrews? I fucking worship Skeleton+.

From what little I've seen so far, I'm amazed by how polished they are for such a primitive machine. Especially the 7800 ones. NES games, on the other hand, aren't quite there yet.

And he still makes games, too. He was contracted to make the first 16-bit Christmas game for RetroZone, for 2011.

Retrozone fucked me so hard when I tried to buy Mr. Gimmick from them. I hate those fuckers. Sent me a beautiful, heartbreaking green brick of empty promises and never e-mailed me back.

>> No.685032

>>685025
So you got a bricked unit, it seems? Poor bastard. However, there are new Gimmick repros, one which is the USA Prototype and one which is the Japanese version. The latter has the sound expansion chip, and can only hear those sounds on a modded NES. They want quite a pretty penny for these, but these are complete in box games. $68 for the normal version and $80 for the enhanced version.

They're going to reprint them for $59 per game. It feels a bit expensive, that's why I wanted opinion before ordering one.

Also, they're printing the game for Dreamcast too.

The only differences are regional packaging and labeling, but it also comes with the soundtrack instead of having to burn it yourself. Also, my name is in the manual for being an early supporter. At the time, it was 50 dollars, so yeah I say definitely worth it for me.

Neat, considering the price for the regular reprint and the fact that the OST comes for its own high price too now...
