The Niggsty4 had some of the most prolific hop'n'scots of ALL TIME. You had. TWO Banjo's. That's twice the bird fuckin bear buckin action all on one N'xty4. TWO Mario 64's. One with rumble, one without, for her pleasure. There was even a Yoshi's Island 64: Mario World 65 - although not a 3D scot'n'bop. Then there was the semi-erect ones such as Jetforcejimini3D, Earthworm Jimini 3D-64, Turok for you true DOOM Muderheads.

Dare I say it, was the N'xty4 THE quadraphonic platform for the 3D jump'n'run game?

Mario 64 is easily the best pure 3D platformer. Outside of that and Sunshine there isn't much worth playing in the genre. All of the common ones people mention (Banjo, Spyro, Jak, Sly, Crash, Rayman 2) usually have minimal platforming, and aren't very good games anyway

What is the real reason 3D Platformers lost their luster? Some like to blame Donkey Kong 64 but I think the numerous amount of 3D Platformers during 6th gen disproves that.

What's the real reason?

1 is by far the best. The only one that's worth playing if you haven't really. 2 is OK but not as good as 1. 3 is just awful in every way. The best move is to play 1 and forget it had any sequels.

3D platformers only really existed to show off the existence of 3D spatial rendering. Unless you're really doing something unique with the physics or gameplay like the 3D Super Marios, 3D platformers get boring quickly.

>> No.6840265

>>6840175
They didn't entirely. When a polished modern 3D platformer comes out like Mario Odyssey / A Hat in Time / the Spyro/Crash remakes comes out they do very well. Psychonauts 2 looks like it's going to be successful as well.

The problem is that there was bubble in the 6th gen where everyone was putting out cash grab 3D platformers and the market became so saturated it crashed. Partially because of >>6840229. People say the genre is dead, but it isn't really DEAD dead. It's just no longer the go-to cash grab genre. And that's honestly probably a good thing. The amount of overall 3D platformers has gone down but the percentage of 3D platformers coming out that are actually good has gone up.

Most game genres that are HUGE now aren't that way because they're super fun, but great at keeping people playing. Some class-based lootbox multiplayer FPS isn't that fun moment to moment but it's amazing at player retention.

I played 2 some months ago after playing through 1. The soundtrack is a massive step down and a lot of the new gadgets aren't real fun to use. They give the monkey's a ton of personality in this one, with different costumes, more unique AI routines: they do a great job of conveying that you're really chasing them in this game though and that's probably it's biggest plus. Not terribly inspired but looks good for the most part, some great colors in the environments and a few nice set pieces. There's been a couple changes that make it feel good like the way the screen tilts as you run with the hoop, and the unique animations for when you've got a guaranteed catch from your net swing. Give it a try sometime, I 100%'d and honestly it's not a bad play, but it's definitely not 1.

Ape Escape 3 > 1 > 2
1 is such a basic bitch game, but that's the charm that allows it to hold up. You can just quickly breeze through it like Banjo Kazooie or Mario 64 and go about your day. It just has the best feel and flow with being able to go from monkey to monkey and stage to stage. 2 tries to evolve the formula with new weapons, more monkey types and villains, and side content. 2 does the best in terms of monkey names and funny unlockable pictures/comics, but that's about it. 1 has all these different locations around the world and across time, 3 has a bunch of levels based off different films and shit, meanwhile 2 just feels like whatever. Not to harp on about theming, but many of the levels don't get more developed than a one word trope, doesn't help a lot of them are dull looking muted open environments for most of the duration. 3 has the best balance in my opinion. Absolutely not upset in the slightest 3 scrapped the gadgets from 2 and stuck with what worked. The original cast of weapons are so fun to use, but the new ones in contrast involve a lot of stopping dead in your tracks and are often situational. The transformations in 3 spice things up more, at least you can get use out of them even if they're underutilized and can only be maintained for like 30 seconds at default. Minigames are all good, but Mesal Gear just puts this set above the rest. Not to mention how much other random stuff you can mess around with in the hub.

That's not true. Lots of games in the 3D Platformer genre hold up well - 2D Platformers are often simplistic from the beginning and are meant to be replayed for that arcade experiences.

I'd agree with this. Scotlectaformers are a great genre, but like everything else they suck when done as a cash grab, like ww2 shooters did. It just so happened that people ended up preferring other genres and that's where the attention shifted. My guess is because other genres like shooters are better suited for multiplayer which gets one type of gamer addicted, and RPGs are better suited for getting a different type of player addicted.

I really enjoy Ratchet and Clank, the first game I mean. I enjoy the rest of the series as well. But the first game is a 3D platformer with weapons as the gimmick while every game from the second onward has been a third person shooter with platforming elements. The first game also has the strongest 50s/60s B scifi movie kind of feel. From the tech design, the enemies (You could pop any of them into an episode of the original Lost in Space and they'd fit right in), to the menus looking like CRTs, the music, the sound effects, etc. Elements of that feel are still in the series today but the first game was when it was at its strongest I think. That said I don't think the games have gotten worse or anything because this element has gotten weaker or anything. Just less appealing to my taste. Also love that if I buy a weapon and don't like how it plays I don't feel obligated to use it because to do otherwise would be a waste of XP or whatever.
