What a good game

Anyone play Jiggies of time? I played to about halfway through castle town and loved it. Works great on real hardware too. I just wish they would have made it so you keep your notes when you leave a level. Note score worked okay in BK because there was no back tracking, but it sucks collecting as many as you can without knowing whether you'll need an other level's move to get the last few.

Not keeping you notes when completely exiting or game over is fine.
But Rare should have made it so you keep them if just dying as long you don't get a game over. That actually would make lives VALUABLE. Then give them less lives to start with and make extra lives more rare - NOW those little statues would actually be special, since they keep you from losing the notes which is the most annoying and frustrating aspect.

Kurko could not do anything about that though since the developers of Banjo's backpack haven't found a way to keep the notes either, the whole workings of the modding is basically to take the structire of BK and change the levels the structures point at, this is also why there can at max be 900 notes. The game cannot keep track of more without code manipulation. Every level in the game was replaced with a new one, there are nine levels and one hub, which Kurko cleverly circumvented by making the Lonlon ranch kind of an own level but to the game it is still the hub.
But the basic mechanics of the game (notes,lives etc) cannot be changed.

Always keep in mind that not too long ago they hadn't even figured out how to access the Jiggy actors, so it was not possible to spawn Jiggies. One of the first BK mods, Banjo-Dreamie, therefore had to resort to using the notes as the big collectible. This shows that if getting THAT - "just" conditionally spawning a collectible - done without the game crashing is already a big deal, actually manipulating the actual inner mechanics of the game (how lives work, notes, maximum number of items etc) will be an even bigger task. It really is much more difficult than we may think..

The issue with it was that it took everything wrong with Tooie and amplified it. Banjo-Kazooie worked because the levels were pretty small, so it was usually clear where you had to go. Except that damn tree level. Only level I couldn't find all the notes on as a kid. Every time I tried, I'd always end up short a couple and couldn't figure out which ones I didn't collect this time.

The tree was pretty brutal. Especially because in BK you had to get all the notes in one life and you spent a lot of that stage in precarious heights where one misstep would kill you.

Anyway, to me Yooka Laylee feels like a middle ground between BT and DK64. It amplifies the problems with BT but thankfully doesn't reach the levels of insanity of DK64. There's still definitely a lot wrong with it. The only really aggravating part of the game is probably the minecart sections, but a lot of it just isn't fun.
