its nothing too crazy, but some sprites, including geno's, looks a bit different
other than that, theres a few original assets made for this tape (mostly tutorial stuff) and it's mostly just showing off the game.

I have to rip VHS tapes for work sometimes, I just use a composite to USB adaptor and then a MacOS app called Videoglide
For preservation probably not great but for cable TV its more than good enough
The next step up would be a Blackmagic Intensity capture card, which I think you can run component or composite into with their breakout cable and is a super solid piece of hardware.

Someone found out that the disc is worthless, the trailer's been on Nico Nico since 2008 and was so widely distributed it goes for about $20 on Yahoo Japan auctions because it wasn't a special premiere event disc and was actually just the DVD they sent to stores. yes, well maybe not the card-shaped ones, but these days encoders are cheap, so devices have onboard encoders, and USB is fast, so together you have cheap usb devices which will send the computer alread-encoded video. couldn't be simpler

god i hated those old cards which didn't have encoders and didn't even have onboard sound, so not only did you need to use your computer's cpu to encode the video in real time, which could result in underruns, you also had to deal with trying to keep the audio in sync, since it was coming from another source

OP, can you consider make an interlaced h.264 rip instead of a deinterlaced one?
i doubt the original video was 30fps
h.264 specifically supports interlaced video, which you need to specify when encoding, so it can encode each field separately
if you do decide to, i can use QTGMC to make a high quality 60fps deinterlace of it
posting interlaced video to placed like youtube is pointless, as it doesn't support it, it will encode the frames as if they were progressive, and it causes the fields to be blended into one-another,ruining the picture (it's also very inefficient, since then you're also encoding the comb patterns)
