Nintendo were utter failures with the presentation of Mario Kart 64 in my opinion. They took the easy way out with sprite renders when Rare was able to pull off fast-paced kart racing with fully polygonal models effortlessly. I often imagine how much better MK64 would have looked with some effort out into it.

MK64: Bare bones, early game so its understandable. Decent but not very fun to play these days. Broken as all hell. Runs well and looks...not great.
DKR: Adventure focus is neat but does make the game feel dragged out at times, variety in vehicles and powers doesn't do much to elevate the game, track design is very sloppy, runs like shit.
CTR: Flawless performance, great visuals, excellent power ups and weapons, tight drift boosting system that feels satisfying to engage with and unravels a tremendous amount of depth, tracks are all phenomenally designed with tons of secrets, shortcuts, shit tons of replayability that doesn't drag out the experience like in DKR. The king has arrived.

This isn't even debatable. MK64 is a glorified tech demo and CTR is the gold standard. Never played DKR though

DKR is really just OK, you'll get a decent run out of it but it's not really the kind of game I'd ever want to replay. CTR though, I can just throw that on and lose 4 hours before I know it.

I think it boils down to physics. Even if CTR had sprite graphics and worse levels, I'd still enjoy all the drifting and the jumping and the momentum etc. more than anything I would in any other racing game.

DKR is amazing. Lots of variety in vehicles, great tracks and characters, challenging and fun objectives, amazing soundtrack and bosses; and it's got motherfucking wizpig. Also plays like a dream and has an interesting boost system. Best kart racer I'd say. Most replayable one with an actual robust single player, which is more than most other kart racers can boast.

Nintendo should have made a mode similar to the collect-a-thon singleplayer of DKR in MK already, that shit was tight.

Mario Kart 64 came out within 6 months of the console's launch while DKR was a year later

doesn't the game's framerate take a huge hit in anything above single player? Lake.I checked it was virtually unplayable in multiplayer, which is bad for a kart racer.

Alright look: when I posted that I had never played MM B&C. Now that I have, I take that post back. It is superior to neither MK64 nor DKR.

>> No.6820319

Too bad nintendo released the n64 as a poorly engineered piece of shit that required highly optimized programming, compression, and optimization of textures/art assets to have games not all look as blocky and flat-shaded as Mario 64 was.

RARE's raw UK autism was the only reason their games weren't shit, that and taking their time before releasing them.

MK64 controls like shit compared to CTR imo. The physics don't feel predictable at all.

They're predictable once you learn them, but the karts in MK64 always feel more treacherous to drive than the karts in CTR, which is one of the reasons that 64 is a more interesting (and better) game

The sprites in MK64 are practically indistinguishable from polygons, I assumed they were polygons for the longest time. Nintendo made the right decision. Also DKR's presentation looks kiddy while MK64's does not. Besides, the actual gameplay is what really matters in the long-term which people on /vr/ should appreciate, and that's a lot better in MK64.

>> No.6821740

>>6821552
And those sprite were probably pretty damn taxing on the hardware as well. Each character has 64 unique sprite for their vehicle, which gets multiplied by 8 for the amount of characters potentially on screen at once. That's 512 sprites being loaded for each game. Compare that to the PS1 in which they had to scale back the port of Street Fighter Alpha 2 by reducing the amount of sprites used for animations.

>> No.6822081

And mario kart looks better. Infinitely better, with twice as much soul. DKR models aged like everything else and look ugly. Try playing on a crt and not an hdtv retard. I'd take modern sprites over gay models anyday

It's solid on its own, lots of stuff to do and races are just a blast. Then you discover how the drifting works and the physics and the game transcends into greatness.
