This is so much better than Super Metroid, how will Japs ever recover?

Best Metroid game I've played, even though it's a little hand-holdy.

Westerners were always better at FPS, and japanese were always better at side-scrollers, this isn't a secret.
Also OP, Metroid II on Game Boy is the best, so it doesn't matter if you prefer Prime or Super, neither is the best in the series.

>unnecessary fetch quest at the very end
This reason alone it makes super metroid far better. Plus I found myself backtracking and wondering back and forth a whole lot more than I did in super. Probably the lack of shortcuts or something.

This dumb opinion ("hurr a fucking horrible bad controls bad gameplay console FPS is better than a real fucking action platformer") is exactly why /vr/ should be pre-1995. Retro is a type of game, not a time period. Fuck off to /v/, children.

>Fuck off to /v/, children.
6th gooners aren't children, they're hairy ass adults who aren't old enough to have experienced the golden age, but also not young enough to be zoomers.

Whatever, what I mean is that 6th gooners are a specific demographic of guys in their older 20s, who grew up with 6th gen (and maybe late 5th gen), but not anything prior.
They aren't the same as kids who grew up with 7th gen.

6th gooners, a better childhood? I don't know. They were alive during the best era of the free internet, before Web 2.0 actually took over, but they were too young to make actual good use of it, probably didn't venture outside of newgrounds and stuff.
6th gooners are a weird bunch, they didn't get to experience much of the world pre-9/11, and they also got their late youth cucked by corona. I guess it is worse to get cucked by corona being a teenager though, but at the same time, 6th gooners had to live their teen and early 20s years in the 2010s, the era of political correctness and all that.
I don't know, I don't think 6th gooners had a necessarily better childhood than zoomers.

It's a good game but it isn't better than Super Metroid. It has a weaker atmosphere; in particular the music is bland until you occasionally hear a remixed Super Metroid tune. And the game is forever shoving its overwritten lore in your face, whereas Super Metroid tells you what's happening efficiently through pantomime and never asks you to look away from the normal game graphics or to temporarily abandon the fun game you're playing in favor of some nerd's medium-quality fanfiction.

Also, of course, going 3D here has the same problem as in Ocarina of Time: The uniformly tile-based world of the preceding 2D game could conceivably hide secrets EVERYWHERE, allowing a feeling of mystery and free exploration, and allowing paths to indeed be hidden anywhere. But the relatively clumsy and expensive 3D models of the newer game are non-interactive props by default, and must be expensively hand-altered to support secret paths. It's generally not enough for some map artist to just paint in a clever secret path in the simple, grid-based map editor. Unique machinery often has to be built to support each hidden way. And unique setpieces tend to stand out, so they are often easy to find, and tend not to feel very natural when they are found.

Also, of course, animations naturally tend to become more realistic and less stylized during the transition to 3D, which tends to make them lengthier. A sprite animation might unceremoniously skip a few moments in order to make an in-game character do something boring (like opening a door or a chest or brandishing a weapon or whatever) instantaneously, whereas a 3D animation will tend to try to show every detail. And showing more takes longer. Simultaneously, game developers are tempted to act as movie directors, though they have little skill at that and it clashes with their medium; and sometimes they fall to this temptation to the detriment of their games. FF summons is the best example, but action games exhibit this too.

Why is it so slow? Why was the artifact hunt so poorly handled? Why are the bosses so boring? I wish this game was as good as everyone says it is. Seems like the entire Gamecube library is skippable.

They were completely different games. The original Metroid trilogy felt like digging deep into enemy territory, hostile and claustrophobic, focused on action. Prime trilogy was more like exploring an uncharted planet, spacious and mostly quiet, focused on scanning for lore and solving puzzles.
Either is fine by me personally, it's up to your preference.
