Is the toothpaste laser actually good in Raiden IV bros? I accidentally picked it up ahead of the stage 3 boss when I going for blue and ended up beating him for the first time anyways. Pretty sure it would've gone smoother and quicker with the blue laser, but still.

Sega Saturn for me. So many damn good arcade ports from the Titan V arcade board, basically perfect ports since the hardware is largely the same as the Saturn. The 2D Graphics are just fucking fantastic on the Saturn, unbeaten that gen. A personal favorite of mine being “The Game Paradise.” Very fun and weird.

This is my take - I think we’ll be fine lads. Newer Shmups tend to not show up go often but they don’t bother me when they do. The spirit is retro and that’s enough for me. Zoomers won’t touch us Shmuplords.

people like seeing characters interact with a world, even if the games present a big challenge. But shmups (like racing games) have objects interact with objects interact with objects, and that's not as appealing for some reason.
If you replaced Super Mario, Sonic or Hollow Knight with a generic metallic blocks and made all the enemies metallic blocks people would be less interested as well.

Racing games can get away with it because car enthusiasts exist. But even racing games benefit from character driven worlds, see Mario Kart, Crash and Sonic Racing. There aren't that many Jet enthusiasts to get attracted to shmups based on airplanes and spaceships alone, and if they exist they get into air combat simulators instead.

They're shmup/platformer combos unless they're top down ones, those are pretty much just shmups. They are very fun games but even the best ones pale in comparison to any good shmup. Gravity is a huge limitation but even beyond that they have no scoring depth or terrible systems, have uninspired boss fights,and have overall less challenging, deep and dynamic gameplay. Shmups have legit scoring, rngs don't.
Shmups have much more complex problems to solve due to the freedom of movement your ship has, the bullet patterns and environmental hazards which make you utilize the whole screen, rngs don't. Rngs are easier, their solutions are more obvious and not as varied, you're crouching or jumping or hiding behind an object on a simple 2D platform. This gets boring far sooner than shmups. This also makes boss battles less dynamic and interesting, their bullet patterns very simple and easy to solve. They are still fun because execution can be tricky in some parts but they don't compare to shmup quality and fun.

Besides, the last three Touhou games had pointdevice mode, seasonal sub-weapons/releases, and beast spirits, they're changing plenty between games. If you're mad about shit like powering up and score items being the same between games I don't even know what to tell you.

I'm sorry, I've been a fan of Touhou for about half of my life and while I admit it's a bit repetitive it's still not exactly out of charm. 17 was bad, but it was NOTABLY bad, and I can point out why that is as well as that it's not normal. The game is so far from the norm for the series that it's almost certainly not just feeling worse because I'm noticing things that were always there.

Do you play these games for the background art or something? The bullet patterns and stories change massively between games. Even in a general rhythm-of-the-story sense things have changed. 14 had you fight the mastermind in stage 5 and stage 6 was just an unknowing source of power. 15 had you fighting people who were only fighting to lure you in the direction of the one they needed you to deal with. 16 was essentially a gauntlet of fights until the lieutenants of the antagonists messed up and left open their escape route for you to follow. If things were just the exact same every game we'd have

The entire first stage, the only real threat was the streaming patterns, the bullets fired straight at you. There were also those things that were obviously meant as a "FUCK YOU if you didn't know to be on this side of the screen when I showed up or you'll get fucked by the way I fill the screen". Then the boss finally had a few decent patterns built on spirals and circles.
The second stage was similar with one or two more actual patterns thrown on top, and many of the streaming patterns came from suicide bullets.
I would appreciate a lot of grazing, but this is just a lot of free grazing with bullets fired straight at you.

I said it looks like a lot of bullets are being thrown straight at you with plenty of leeway around it so you can dodge to the left or right. In other words, it may not be easy, but it didn't look like the patterns had much variety in how you handled them.

idk maybe people think you're trolling but anyway besides that you should check out the Shikigami No Shiro series 3 in particular, a great take on grazing and a lot of varied characters with their own special weapons. If you're into all that shrine maiden shit play Tengai and Guwange too, though they'll both give you a hard time compared to CRS and Touhou normal, and Guwange has a steep learning curve because it's unlike anything else.

Jaimers makes everything look easy. He's the world's best shmupper.

Elemental Master is a good time. Like most technosoft games it's pretty easy after you play it a little bit but unlike most Compile games (which are easy and boring), they are almost always easy and exciting. I never played Undeadline. I've been playing based Battle Mania Daiginjo recently. Shits out a million extends at you because your hitbox is the size of Ft. Lauderdale. But that's ok, because the game is cool.
