I don't know about you people but i love looking at old videogame magazines, seeing all the pictures for the (then) upcoming games, reading about all the rumors and even having a peak at games that ended up getting cancelled...
If you have any scans from any gaming magazine from the good old days, share it here so we can all enjoy remembering the past!

Unfortunately it seems like a lot of the Xbox mags from back in the day never got scanned, and they never show up on eBay for some reason.

That said, does anyone have a scan of Issue 09 of the UK Xbox Magazine? I've been looking for this specific issue for a long time and I've never been able to find anything. Seems like it hasn't been archived anywhere from what I can tell.

I think sixth gen had the best gaming magazines. The first gen with consistent high quality writing, spotless design and there being no kiddy feel to the whole thing. It was at a point in time where technology allowed them produce a gaming magazine cheaply (including screenshots, high quality paper, just overall efficiency) but before people had shifted to online and the market fell apart. It was also when people weren't really sure where the industry was headed, what the future would be like and the writers were genuinely really excited and it showed. An exciting time to be alive.

You could say that about every gen's vidya magazines though. Until the paper market crashed nearly entirely, every year and every gen was better than the last one, that's just because for the longest time, we were in the sharp incline of the S-curve that was videogames. NES to SNES to N64 to GC is like the evolution of man. Every one of those generations were giant leaps in technology and also popularity of the whole gaming environment It's not something you can ever replicate in the post-information age...

Basically, 6th gen was the apex of Magazines because every generation was the apex of their time's in terms of magazines, graphics, stories, and most importantly, FUN games.

Well, the main problem was the development hell that the game went through before it became a Wii U exclusive. First it was an Xbox 360 exclusive, but then Kinect happened. Then it was published by THQ and was developed using Darksiders 2 engine, but, you know, THQ went bankrupt. Then it was published by some Chinese company and only then Nintendo picked it up. By this time it was powered by UE3. But yeah, there were many technical issues.

>Oh, there's a doosy of a story behind that one. I shit you not, but Halverson was high on acid when he wrote the Cybermorph article, along with half the staff. We had just pulled a couple of all-nighters in a row, which was the norm at deadline times. Apparently, when The Enquirer came back to work the next morning, he dropped some acid in the coffee pot, which most of the crew, including Halverson, drank from. I wasn't a coffee drinker at the time so I didn't really notice anything unusual and didn't learn what was going on until George started threatening to murder Cockburn.

One of my proudest moments was getting a fat stack of Nintendo power mags in great condition, for FREE. I'm talking the super Metroid edition, Mario 2, it was I think 20-30, maybe even more. I've been meaning to buy a frame to display them.

Speaking of which, anybody have advice on how to safely store old magazines?

>> No.6822215

>>6808465
Going through these magazines, I first noticed just how many games got cancelled and/or completely forgotten. Tons of small projects disappearing into nothingness, you can't even find some of them on Wikipedia.
These really are amazing time capsules.

>> No.6822224

>>6808526
Nobody subscribed to it.
Everybody that I know of that got a magazine, it was either gamepro or electronic gaming monthly.

>> No.6822232

>>6808601
The original gamepro was great. Reviewers were chosen to review games based on their personal taste. So you wouldn’t have somebody who plays mostly RPGs telling you what they thought of the new FPS or some shit. Like we do now.

>> No.6822246

>>6822232
reviews were more fair back then.
nowadays reviews are a joke especially in the west. tlou2 reviews are some biggest shill craps i have ever seen in gaming journalism.

>>6822246
>reviews were more fair back then
i don't know, i have seen some of those fact hunt videos from Larry Bundy jr and he sometimes brings up the reviews from UK magazines and their scores are nonsese sometimes, same with some reviewers shitting on anything 2D back on 5th gen, it's definetly different from reviewers today tho, no disagreement there

I feel like "fair" isn't the right word. Reviewers were always biased, but it was a different kind of bias. I guess it was a more "honest" bias where you as the reader could get to know the reviewer and what they wanted/disliked in a game. I loved it in Gamefan, even though the magic kinda faded when I found out many of the personalities were written by the same person it was still fun.

>> No.6822893

>>6822856
oh yeah. im not saying there werent bullshit reviews back then. just saying its a lot worse now than before when there were more fair reviews. reviewers didnt sugarcoat and were more critical of flaws.

I think thats a good way to put it. The reviews were more like having a conversation with a buddy. They weren't really trying to be academic. It was a "we play a shit ton of games and here's what we think."

Magazines were pretty much how I cope with being poor and unable to afford the games. Going to the grocers, taking in the air conditioning, reading the magazines, then putting it back on the shelf to imagine how the games were my old days, which I wouldn't call good.

As for scans, most of the ones I got are from retromags.
