Hay Spriteguy, you got time for a side project? I have a request or two and if buzzword mod didn't leave too bad a taste in your mouth for vehicles I know this is something you'd be great at:

I'm going to be making one or possibly two monsters based on vehicles. The main one I'm working on right now I'm calling a Demon Tank: it wanders the map picking up monsters for a ride and they are able to fire from it. I'm imagining a simple APC-like armored vehicle, with goofy eye slits and a modifiable face window that I would just have different monster faces popping into for different types of attacks.

The second one is a simpler but scarier project called Doom Bus. It's a giant demonic bus that just acts as a bossbrain, travelling between maps spawning monsters, a wandering superboss you can chase preferably in hub-based megawads.

I dunno, I'm a reborn Doom player and it took Brutal Doom to get me back into it-- i haven't touched BD any more than the first two times I sat down with it but It inspired me to play through get reacquainted with the core campaigns and source ports. Then I moved onto other WADs and such.

BD isn't amazing, but if it gets more people playing Doom then I'm all for it.

Well, there is an infoscreen in the game for it, F1.

But I can give you a basic rundown.

Everyone is on their own at the beginning. After a few moments, a murderer is picked out of random, and the rest of the players are deemed innocents. The murderer's job is, you guessed it, to kill everyone. The murderer immediately gains an arsenal of traps and supplies they can use to hunt everyone down, such as a gas bomb, or traps that shoot people when ran past, or smoke bombs. The gas is the most useful, and is best at breaking up groups of innocents huddled together closely. As the murd, you also gain access to the hidey holes in the walls, which are marked by exclamation points. These are pathways that only the murd can enter, and are used for hiding, laying low, resupplies, and traveling around the map undetected.

The innocents play another game. They have to find out who the murderer is, and take them out. There are three ways to know: the player has a knife in his hands (on the sprites), uses or drops a trap, or enters a hidey hole. There is a variety of weapons laying around the map that can be used, as well as guns and ammo. The murderer can use them too, however. If you attack an innocent and kill them, you are marked as a traitor with a yellow aura. You basically have to make allies and work together to fight the killer.

Could somebody explain in layman's terms how height works in Doom? I understand why there can't be a room on top of a room and why your shots only have to line up horizontally and why monsters can melee you from 300ft above you as long as you're both against the wall/ledge.

But how does it work when a place is reachable only by running off of a ledge because it's too high from the ground? Or when you can't return the way you came because you fell from a ledge? Why is that line passable only from a certain height?

I'm not really sure what you're getting at here. You're asking why actors (players, monsters, objects) interact with the environment the way they do, such as being able to properly interact with stairs, ledges, and all that, versus why you've got things like infinitely tall actor collisions in the original Doom exe? I'd figure something like that just comes down to different physics collision systems between actors and level geometry vs. actors and other actors.

Basically it boils down to this: Certain things are only account for on the X and Y axis, like shooting monsters and melee attacks. Other things actually incorporate the Z axis. As for why there can be no floor over floor, the level map is literally just a 2D map with height values assigned to the sectors. Its sorta perspective drawn onto the screen, instead of using polygons and such.

There aren't a lot of situations where it's worth the effort, even in pre-3D-floor ZDoom making a silent teleport (There's a way to make a player teleport to a line pretty much seamlessly) would be a better choice in most cases.

I tried playing FreeDoom once awhile ago, there were a fair amount of switches you had to shoot in order to progress, which was quite annoying. Those kinds of switches are nice for secrets, quite infuriating when they're mandatory. Overall level design didn't seem to be a winner either, but then again I didn't really stick with the whole thing.

Yeah, it's neat, but like OpenArena (an open-source Quake 3 equivalent with the weirdest character roster in an FPS), you can easily tell they were desperate for practically any asset that's suitable, be it sprites or maps.

Though, I wonder what the game would be like if it had today's Doomers in charge of making sprites and levels for it. But given how Steam is the most popular choice for digital distribution and that piracy is rampant, it's a game that is sadly almost obsolete because everyone would rather play proper Doom for good reasons.

Hmm, looks like if you set CPU cycles to either Auto 100% or setting it to 330000 (or well anywhere in the 300000 so long as it's not near 400000 that's when it starts getting weird sound glitches and such again) will make it run smoothly.
