There's a little tutorial in the graveyard near the hospital in the hub area, but basically you have to use the horror monitor (which is hidden in a spot where your all of your senses go off the charts) to detect hidden traps in the area. Bring it up in a sport where one or more of your senses is going off, and try to figure what object it could be, like if sight and hearing is going off, it could be a TV with static on the screen, or smell could be a toilet, stuff like that. If you successfully detect the trap, you gain back some adrenaline, which is required to use the horror monitor, but if you set off a trap, your heart rate will go up, and a lot of the time you'll lose some health as well. Standing still will cause your heart rate and bleeding to go down fairly quickly, while walking will regenerate your heart rate slowly. If your heart rate gets too high, you'll die, if your bleeding gets too high, your heart rate will rapidly start to drop, then you'll die unless you read a porno mag to raise your heart rate again.
