Sup /vr/

So I have two broken Saturns.

The first one, won't read disks. The disk will spin, but the cubes flash and the icons on the screen flash and nothing happens. Other than that, nothing else is wrong.

The second one, will read disks, but when I turn they system on, the entire screen flashes like a strobe light. The disks read, and the games work, but it just flashes like crazy.

Now I tried switching disk drives to the console that doesn't flash, but now it just won't read disks. It will say reading disk, then go blank and nothing happens.

Now I know I have a working disk drive in it, but it just doesn't want to read them. So, saturn 1 must have something wrong with the motherboard.

Anyway, what could be causing Saturn 2 to flash? I'm using an rf cord, and in Saturn 1, it works fine, but Saturn 2 it does not, makes the screen flash.

Any help at all is appreciated. I just want to play my damn Saturn.

wish I could help you, best I can recommend is to wait until we get the retro console hardware wikia going, it's supposed to be for stuff just like this.

reseat the cables, make sure everything is nice and tight.

Is the first Saturn a model 1 or 2 Saturn? Model 1 Saturns are a little notorious for having difficulties nowadays, so either your laser might be dead or there could be a short in the ribbon cable. However, the ribbon cable could've also simply come loose. Happened in mine, but that was also because mine is modded and the cable wasn't pushed back in all the way.

As for the other Saturn, it sounds like your video output might be going out? Not sure, but if the RF adapter works in the other Saturn then it possibly is.

The first Saturn is going to be the easiest to fix. Open it up and check to make sure the ribbon cable is firmly connected on both ends and that nothing is haggard or anything. If that isn't the case, you need to look into getting a replacement laser part and/or cable. You can find both of those things on this site right here and they're not too expensive: http://www.segastyle.com/store/

However, it looks like they're out of ribbon cables at the moment, but it's most likely the laser.

I've opened up many a Saturn and it's a very simple proceedure as long as you have some patience working with delicate parts. You can find a tutorial for the installation also on their website here: http://www.segastyle.com/SaturnJVCLaser.html

Saturn has always been my favorite console, so I hate to see one go to waste. :P

I've jiggled the cords, and messed with them, but still nothing. I've slapped the underside too and still nothing.

I just want to play virtua fighter...

Thanks for the input.

Both are model 2 Saturns. I tried switching just the laser from Saturn 2 over to Saturn 1, and it still won't read. I cleaned the ribbon cables off, and they're both inserted rather snugly. Alas, still nothing though.

Would buying a new AV cable for it work? Or do I need to somehow replace the input jack for the AV cable?

An AV cable would have fucking NOTHING to do with how the system operates.

Lol, just read that. Long day at work and my brain is mush.

Anyway, that is unfortunately a field that I'm not well versed in. I haven't ever seen anywhere that sells any sort of replacement AV port or anything, so your only option might be to either find a broken Saturn for parts and try to put together a frankenstein console or just purchase a new working console altogether. You could try using an AV cable instead of the RF, but I get the feeling that since the RF works in the other Saturn that isn't the issue.

Do you hear any kind of a clicking noise OP? Also, are you trying original or burned games?

>> No.679484

>>679423
Nope, no clicking. And yes, the games are original.

Faulty AV cables CAN cause flashing, newfag

I'd assume he's got either a second AV cable or is hooking them up with the same.

Either way, the AV cable works for one of them, it should be able to work for the other.

I'm going to go to the store and buy an actual RGB cable for it rather than this shit RCA cable. I know it's a long shot that it will work, but fuck it.

If it doesn't work, I'm going to de-solder the rca jack from the one saturn, and swap them. That may fix it. Either way, I'm not really losing any money. Both of them were essentially free. If I fuck it up, then I'll have 2 spare saturns for parts if I ever find one that works...

Pull the other leg. It's got bells on it. The system doesn't take any input from the device being fed the audio and video signals like HDMI and VGA allow for, and is not going to cycle the output on and off, or oscillate the brightness in a repeating waveform. Flashing would require either a fucked-up video encoder that is spitting out the wrong signal or the wrong frequency, or mechanical action repeatedly interrupting an otherwise steady signal.

You know the worst part about having a degree in electronic engineering is having to waste time explaining how your assertions are wrong, only for some other person to start the cycle all over again.
