The quest for never-ending graphical improvements. Throughout the 5th and 6th gen, FF was at the forefront of graphical advancement, pumping out nicer and nicer looking games every couple years. When the 7th gen happened, it became unsustainable because the standard for AAA graphics, budget, and dev time grew by an order of magnitude.

There are many such cases. It's a micro example of a macro trend that affected the entire industry.

Only after reflecting on the past, which culminated in the creation of IX, were they able to return to the drawing board to craft X.

Good point. IX wasn't even going to be a numbered title but a "Gaiden." X was the logical progression from VIII, and improved on the design philosophy and treading new ground while having the new hardware to explore these possibilities. To me X has many great qualities but is sort of a dud, it feels somewhat unfinished. It's clear they had a lot of scrapped ambitions when you play the final product. It was going to have online features, a lot of compromises were made and it was clearly rushed and streamlined, a great example of a game being an empty shell of what the developers originally envisioned.

This doesn't apply at all to VII, VIII or IX to me: these games seemed to have a more consistent and realized vision from the onset.
