The only reason I love the Metroid series as much as I do is because I figured it out all on my own (the first three games at least, never played any of the Metroid Prime bullshit) and it made for a great time. If you are actually serious here, you are ruling out the best puzzle/exploration game of the sixth generation due to a petty gripe about perspective. Metroid Prime is probably the very best game to come out since the sixth generation, and easily rivals Super Metroid in quality (and surpasses it in several areas, including music).

having played earthbound i would say it's a pretty good rpg, and i understand why so many people like it. sure, there's probably some people bandwagoning (is that how you'd say that?) but i don't think very many of them are here on this board.

As there seems to be some reasonable fellows in here in terms of fans of Prime, I need to get something off my chest:
The exploration in Prime (and really, the whole trilogy) was very mediocre (I'd put it on the same level as Metroid 2's exploration) to the point that it bothers me when someone calls the game(s) a perfect transition of Super (or Metroid in general) to 3D. It was a great transition of the really linear ones (Metroid 2 and Fusion) sure. Now hear me out on this for a second, because I know my shit when it comes to the Trilogy (Prime especially) so bear with me here.

Unless you use glitches (glitches that I will point out are patched out of Trilogy) you cannot sequence break in any possible way during your playthroughs, up until the artifact/temple key/battery hunts at which point there is no sequence besides get macguffins, proceed to last area. Due to this, this means that (aside from the order you get expansions, and the optional missile combos) every single run goes exactly the same. The game(s) tricks you into thinking your exploring worth a damn via the large areas, and the top tier atmosphere. But when you get down to it, there is always only ever one way to go to progress, and you'll get to it the same way every run. The game(s) have no tricks the player can utilize to really explore (The scan dash that makes all the sequence breaks of Prime possible for example, was a glitch.) like IBJing (3 bomb limit) or walljumping (requires Screw Attack and special walls in Echoes and Corruption).

For that reason, I find that the Trilogy falls a bit short the mark on delivering the full Metroid experience in 3D because I feel that being able to explore outside of the intended sequence like you can in the original, Super, and ZM because of your cunning and imagination to be a big part of that.

But fuck, they're still really great games. I'm just saying is all.
