My brothers Xbox had a dead HDD.

I just built this cable https://www.instructables.com/id/XBox-EEPROM-ReaderWriter/

Dumped the EERPOM off my softmodded Xbox and wrote it to the broken one. Then I cloned the my Xbox's drive using Chimp 261812 and chucked it into the broken one. It worked and also got softmodded in the cloning process.

The DVD drive still doesn't work. But I don't give a fuck. It's not tied to the motherboard anyway so one out of another broken Xbox could eventually replace it.

Also if anyone does this only overwrite the Xbox HDD Key, don't overwrite everything on the EEPROM.

Once you have a custom dashboard you can use an FTP client to connect to your Xbox and copy things to and from it.

People drive home the Dreamcast 2 meme for the following reasons
>handful of Dreamcast ports/sequels/games that meant for Dreamcast (Gun Valkyrie)
>Controller is the DC controller with an extra analog stick and black and white buttons
>being cutting edge in its online capabilities like the Dreamcast was in 1999
>EA refusing to support Xbox Live, similar to how they refused to support the Dreamcast
>both systems had a short life of about 3-4 years
>microsoft actually was going to loan Sega about 5 million dollars to stay afloat before the Dreamcast was going to be cancelled, and even proposed making a GDROM addon drive to play DC games on Xbox
As fan of both systems, it's still pretty far fetched. Outside of Microsoft and Sega supporting each other early on most of the similarities are coincidental. EA for instance refused to work with Xbox Live because they wanted to run their own servers, and the short life spans of the console were for different reasons (Sega being neck deep in debt and had too many Dreamcasts in their warehouses, Microsoft being in a feud with Nvidia that lead to them working with ATI as soon as 360 development began).

one common way to softmod an xbox is with a specially crafted savegame for a couple of specific games
since xbox memory cards are in fact just 8M usb flash drives, and the controller ports (both on the console and on the controllers) are regular usb ports, you can plug a regular usb flash drive into an xbox using an adapter such as the one you mentioned
if you load up such a special savegame onto your flash drive, then load the savegame in the appropriate game, you can then get the xbox to run some homebrew, at that point you can softmod the xbox (or flash a modified bios to do a hardmod)

All the ports, both the controller ports and the memory card ports on controllers, are just funny shaped USBs on the original Xbox. Both my Xbox drives are broken/quit so I don't see the point of collecting for it. I already have ~50 games that are now functionless. I have to redownload them all. I'll never see the point in collecting disc-based games when the drives fail like this.

Saddest thing is I have the first ~55 OXM discs and you can't exactly find all of those online nor would I really want to dedicate ~200gb of HDD space storing them even if I could.

not him, but that's a losing battle, xbox dvd drives haven't been made for 16 years, replacements will continue to become harder to find, more expensive to buy, and last less time
the solution isn't replacing the drive, it's avoiding it in the first place, for a long time now you've been able to run games from the xbox's internal hdd, for which there are new parts for (you can buy off-the-shelf hdd/ssd's as well as adapters to IDE, no need to keep finding original xbox hdds)

It was devastating as I enjoyed the Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast greatly to see Sega unable to continue coupled with financial hardships at the time, quitting videogames was easy. The money situation has not improved much but there does seem to be a lot of great games I missed out on.

Thanks! Found a few more not on the shelf. Having quit videogames, I did miss out on Halo. I heard MCC allows you to switch to the originals, would that be acceptable or is it inauthentic? I got my xbox running xbmc and play games through hard drives. I would love to have the dvd reader working again, though. It was already not working when I bought it.
I have read that finding a replacement is pretty difficult and the easiest way would be just to get another xbox to try and salvage the drive. Are there other options?

>> No.6826338

>>6826301
Fixing it, which depending on what's wrong with it, may be impossible.

Common fixes include disassembly, cleaning and re-lubricating the drive's parts, and sticking a price sticker on the top of the drive in order to fix the "drive won't open" problem where the electromagnet becomes weaker and sticks over time.

You can replace the drive with a flashed version of a PC drive of specific models only that are also old. I'm not going to specify further on that one. Look it up if you care.
