Old games in general were willing to have men and women with more fat tissue, ironically, characters nowadays are skinnier with little to no body fat, compare Aya Brea more voluptuous figure compared to The Third Birthday one. It's sad, you won't find women in videogames with the physique or cute face of Christina Hendricks, but you will find ugly women with average/petite to quasi anorexic bodies, it's sad. Compare Claire in the remake to the original fuller figure.

It's 3d not sprites, overlaid on prerendered backdrops with alpha masks. 4 sides on a cylinder (arms/legs) was about the limit back then. Also bear in mind they had to read at a long distance on some shots so they were modelled chunky probably for that reason

I think the "beginning of the end" for FF and jRPGs in general was when PC became affordable to everyone, and people could play western RPGs and MMOs and suddenly we realized that FF games were on-rails corridor zero-choice cutscene-crap.

The only reason people liked FF7 was lack of competition in the console-based PS1-dominant world of the late-90's.

Alright premise, but a horrible script. Contrary to popular belief, the Englishs cript is a grand improvement over the original, because the translators were infinitely more professional than the writers. Gameplay is an absolute afterthought to the point of insult. Music is great and visual aesthetics are amazing. The world is pretty fresh too.
