This is good advice some of you might want.

Pick one or two shmup(s) with good replay value (scoring).
Play one or two hour(s) a day.
If ports or emulation aren't accurate consider buying a PCB.
Consider your monitor setup, is it optimal?
Never EVER join a shmup forum, discord or community. [I found them to be a waste of time].
Save replays of your progress and best runs.
Save replays of top players in your chosen shmup(s) for research.
Practice consciously with specific targets in mind. Ask yourself: "what did I learn or figure out in my last session?". Think about your route, "can I repeat this sequence consistently or is it too risky?". Think about the patterns you're seeing: are they aimed, static, rng, can you manipulate them? tl;dr play thoughtfully.

Do this for a few years and you'll be in the top 1% of shmup players, you'll have a rewarding experience that keeps on giving. You'll have big skills, big scores, and you'll be owning the shmup(s) instead of THEM owning you. You won't become a shut in loser, you won't become a 1cc collecting scrub, and you won't have mental problems like most of the players. You won't waste time on their community drama. Anyone with half a brain will figure this out but I thought I'd save you some time.

Tip: Batrider and Garegga are your friends, don't fear the rank or what you've been told.

This is legit. 1CCs are nothing bad though. Collecting some still puts you ahead of 99% of so called shmup players. Just dont grab a bunch of easy ones and expect street cred.

The discords and shit are full of baby shit drama from nonplayers. Avoid. Marks is probably the most tolerable but only by a little. I believe they have their own "secret" pro server so they dont have to deal with it either.

Twitter is the only place i have seen a lot of good players constantly posting some good shit and not collector "look at my new game i bought that will never be played" shit. Follow some legit guys and post about your own scoring.

Also, there is room for a mid tier. You dont have to jump into scoring and expect to be popping WRs all over the place. A 2-ALL of DDP is a nice accomplishment regardless of score. This is something i wish the higher level players would help support. It cant be expected that everyone hits 600 mil in DDP or your run is shit. That will be the only thing that kills the scene.

It's a good game that's overhyped by non-players, with an interesting gimmick and some old-school elements, but also a very harsh restrictive learning curve. Take a look at stage 4 to see Ikaruga at its best and worst. There are really well choreographed enemy patterns and high precision, elegant gameplay but it's all very restrictive and unforgiving. You either dance to the game's tune and memorize every individual enemy spawn which can get very chaotic or you kiss your chain goodbye/be scared of shooting down enemies.

I got a RAP 4 used so i could put whatever i wanted in it. Really just try to get something that has a great shell or base. You can replace everything in those and it will last you forever.
