What are some retro games that are either a really uncommon mix of genres, defy genre altogether, or are simply really unique in terms of gameplay (emphasizing gameplay rather than aesthetics here)? Examples include:
>Shenmue (real-time adventure game with life sim elements)
>Racing Lagoon (racing JRPG)
>Wonder Project J (Robot child raising RPG and/or Pinocchio for weebs)
>Sentient (first-person adventure with social simulation and trust level elements kinda like The Thing)

>Gunparade March gives players a decent amount of freedom for a PsOne game – you can study, go on dates, start fights with your classmates or focus on becoming a pilot. The school sim is part, probably the most interesting part, of Gunparde March. There are also Evangelion-like monsters to defeat with a tactics-lite system.

Moon: Remix RPG Adventure for the Playstation. It will be translated and localized for the first time with an upcoming port for the Nintendo Switch.

It is technically a role-playing game, but is unique and attempts to do something brilliant and interesting, turning the genre on its side.

This is a great idea for a thread, particularly since you specified you're looking for games that are unique for their gameplay as opposed to just having aesthetics that look "unique." I hope it has a good run before it dies.

He specifically stated he was not looking for games that are merely gimmicky.

>>6767480
Call their games gimmicky, sure, but as long as they're fun, effective, and challenging gimmicks, it's just as well.

For games with hybrid genres, you can't go wrong here. It's a classic so most have heard of it.

Omikron: The Nomad Soul. It's an adventure game with first person shooting and 3D fighting game elements.
