Is this game as shitty as people say it is? It seems interesting with cool atmosphere and like it would be fun co op, but all I hear about it is that it's bad. Is it casuals crying about it or is it true?

Suffers from Raven's disgusting switch hunt fetish. Far more time will be spend looking for the small change in level geometry in another area (or another map!) after you press a random switch than time spent fighting monsters.

Art style and weapons were cool as fuck, still love me some Wraithverge to this day. The constant switch hunts and back tracking kills your motivation to keep going in a hell of a hurry. Hexen II is impossible to finish today without a walkthrough, some of the puzzles are just to cryptic, such as the ones in the egyption themed area.

The Hexen II expansion however was a completely different experience. It's more like Quake with simple puzzles you can solve without a walkthrough and linear progression. It also added a new character class.

The point is Hexen expansion doesn't add or change anything other than adding more levels, correct?

Gross exaggeration. The game tells you what to do; it's a little cryptic, but everything can be eventually figured out with a little systematic searching and trial-and-error.

I played the game when I was 10 and I did not understand all of the text the game spewed out (because I'm not a native speaker of English), which added even more difficulty to it, and yet I finished it.

I consider it a good game to play every time you want a break from the usual ID Software retro stuff (Doom, Heretic, Quake). As others said, it has cool weapons, requires you to make extensive use of items, and is pretty enjoyable. Not necessarily as enjoyable as the other titles, but it has its unique flavor and is definitely the most sophisticated one among them.

Hexen only respawns the two-headed basic enemy though (forgot their name). I quit Deathkings because of the swamp level (Darkmere?) with respawning Stalkers. Those from across the map would form a firing squad while those near me blocked me from going anywhere. I killed hundreds of those and nearly gave up because of a maze-like underground room where different sections of the water would go up and down at different times.

The "1/100th of the puzzle has been solved" and "Something has happened somewhere" memes are totally overblown. It's not shitty at all. It's cool as fuck and there's nothing else on 5th gen consoles like it. It's got the action of Doom mixed with the puzzle solving and mystery of a dungeon crawler and it's wrapped up in a dark gothic 90s style that few other games have outside of Diablo or maybe Demon's Souls. Beating this game was one of the most memorable gaming experiences of my life and I never played it until about 5 years ago. People call it shit because they got filtered by the difficulty. The game is hard as balls on higher difficulties and the puzzles are going to stump you if you're too retarded to piece clues together, but if you have an IQ over 100 you should have no problem with this game. N64 version is the best IMO, it replaced the gaudy FMV with cool written intros to each level and music that sounds a little creepier. Definitely recommended, just don't play the PS1 or Saturn versions unless you like half the content and enemies with only a front sprite.
