Everyone shits on this as a kusoge but I adore 53 Stations for the enemy AI. Attacking is wonky until you get used to it, but Gimmick is the same wonkiness and people praise it. Enemies are fun and reactive, it's got cryptic shit like Mario, scenery is fantastic for an early low-tech title, and music is only okay. If it got the future Sunsoft treatment then I guarantee this game would have been worth as much as Gimmick nowadays.

It reminds me of a game that an old Japanese grandfather who studies ancient poetry and used to teach martial arts would own so his grandchildren had something to play when they visited.

Which is presented as an inanimate object, the same way the moving platforms operate in SMB, neither of which are as complex as animating an animal. It was certainly possible in 1985 and easier to do after SMB became the smash success it was, but at what cost?

Thoughts on the Kaiketsu Yanchamaru series?

I will admit one difference: you can leave Yoshi without losing him, you can remount.
The dinos and skateboards are basically just powerup sprites like the tanuki suit or kuribo shoe

>> No.6757401

>>6757254
Yes they are not complex and certainly possible, but that's hindsight. During the development of SMB, they did not have that hindsight and adding a dinosaur to a game that already worked wasn't necessary. Adventure Island is basically an iteration of SMB, so of course they were able to add to it, just like the flying carpet mechanic was added to Mario Madness.

moving from west coast to east coast in '88 with my parents, plugging in my NES into every TV of every hotel room and trying to beat Castlevania. Played it over and over and over again. In hotel swimming pools I'd leap out of the water making that "psshhh-tssht-tssht!" sound the fishmen made in the game.

I never fucking beat the Grim Reaper. Played Castlevania probably thousands of times and never got passed that smug cheating shithead.

I got my NES + turtles for xmas. It was the last present I opened and I was already happy, but the NES made it my best xmas ever. I didn't get an NES until I was 16 years old so nearly 3 years ago. Until then my experience with the system was exclusively with the Wii Virtual Console. I had Mario 1, 2, and 3 and Kirby's Adventure on the Wii and my love of retro games stems from those 4 titles and playing them growing up as well as Mario Kart 64 and Super Mario 64 but this is an NES thread. The NES is what prompted me to get deeper into collecting games and really learn about the innards of each system and how to clean/repair it all. It's also a great way to bond with my step dad because he grew up with one. Definitely one of my favorite systems out there.

Back in the early 90's one of my classmates had the raddest birthday party I've ever been to. The entire class was invited, and he had these various competitions set up with trophies being awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each. One of them was how far you could get in Super Mario Bros. without dying. Unfortunately I only made it to like the first underground level before fucking up. I did, however, come in second place in the electric slot car racing competition. I knew I still had the trophy lying around here somewhere.

>while i can see why people dont like zoomers getting into retro gaming because they usually ruin it for them,

I don't. I'm forty and I have absolutely no interest in getting more young people into old games or in keeping young people away from old games. I liked the games as a kid and now as an adult I like the games because THAT IS THE POINT. The games are still the same, regardless of who is or isn't playing them. I also like new games, because THAT IS ALSO THE POINT. If every person to sincerely say the name of any popularly known "generation" in any Internet comment anywhere were to instantly die upon doing so then life for the rest of us would only improve. The whole concept of naming generations of people is irrelevant to all practical purposes of any actual use.

I was playing Capcom's Trojan on the NES and at the first boss fight my big brother was spazzing out going SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT and kicked the table the NES was on (I don't remember why it was that way). The game then stopped and we thought he broke the system. We were not getting a replacement anytime soon. I was in shock and heartbroken. My brother peeked over into the console and lifted the cover and saw that the cartridge was up and that kick pushed it up. Nothing was damaged and the NES booted up like normal. We laughed and went on playing the game. I'm three years younger but I was actually pretty good at it, I could beat the pirate and was the first to beat the armadillo mutant in the game.

I really enjoyed the games from Konami, Capcom, Tecmo, Natsume, and Nintendo. Great memories bringing it over to cousins' homes and playing games alongside them. That TV commercial with CRTs bursting out the sides of a space station capturing people with the games got me to get the Deluxe Set. Between all the games of the NES, the NES itself, arcade games, Transformers, Robotech, Voltron, and Ghibli movies of the day convinced my younger self all the best stuff came from Japan. The system is still in my top 5 non-PC consoles because of all the fun I have with it.

>>6756794
While it is a very fun game, it is not the best to me. I remember calling all the Toys R' Us in the area to find one that had the game in stock. The previews in Nintendo Power and the fun of the first two Super Mario games convinced me to get it asap. I never understood why the game remained as Nintendo Power's #1 ranked game (with Final Fantasy at #2) for so long; I liked it a lot, maybe even more than World, but I enjoyed other games as much or more too in its day.

When I was young, I was always trying to compare the Ghost/Goblins series with the Castlevania ones. I always preferred the Castlevania games, but the Gn'G games always reviewed better in the magazines I read. That's when I learned the magazine reviews do not reflect my opinions and they can have differing tastes. Death was a huge barrier for me too back then, when I get past him, Dracula was way easier, subverting my expectations.

It does everything a kusoge does. It launches enemies at you that are impossible to dodge if you don't know they're there preemptively, moving platforms are practically invisible (sprite flicker) and don't sync up correctly, and it's riddled with instant death traps like pits and Elmira.

I finished it last weekend, it's a straight up kusoge, don't let the Konami logo fool you.
