I really don’t get the hype for this. It’s a decent game but most of the content is padding for just getting 300 cars you’ll never really use with the actual grand prix being really short. I prefer 64 and 2 on PSP

I like the game, but the reason why Type 4 gets massive praise is because people probably "beat" the Grand Prix once, the equivalent of playing a coin-op game once, which is enough play time to gush over the insanely good late 90s Namco production like graphics, music, and SOUL. The truth is you practically require a spreadsheet to play Type 4 for real. If you thought flight and space sims were autistic, this PS1 arcade racer says hello.

There are a combination of 321 cars in the game (20 cars for each 4 manufacturers then paint job rehash for each of the 4 teams, plus a Pac Man bonus car). In order to unlock them, you need to use every unique combination of racing team (game difficulty), car manufacturer (handling model), and finish in very specific positions THROUGHOUT the grand prix.

For example, picking team Pac Racing Club and manufacturer Assoluto, finishing in these EXACT positions 3rd > 3rd > 2nd > 1st > 1st > 1st > 1st > 1st will specific unlock car 1, 2, 7, and 14.

Pic related that's my spreadsheet from a few years ago before I wanted to commit sudoku and played Rage Racer instead.

Repetition is not even my complaint, it's when you have to finish in 3rd and 2nd so you spend the entire last 2 laps riding up the AI's asshole and push them through the track, and should I remind you that in Ridge Racer you "bump" instead.

People generally like to criticise this version for the controls. But, with a little tweaking, this version of Daytona USA is one of my favourite ports of the game.

480p @60fps via VGA. Virtually no pop-in. Actually, a good conversion of the arcade game. I can see why some people would not be a fan of the aesthetics of the DC version, and I prefer the voice audio samples and music of the original. DC game also supported 4 player races online. Which was fun as shit, when they worked. Though the lag through a 56k modem could be pretty bad.

TNFS is only worth playing really if you want 1) to experience the origins of the series or 2) actually played it back in the day and want a mostly srs bsns but not autismo racing game. It has aged the worst of all of the early titles but that is entirely down to it being on more limited hardware (strictly speaking all versions are ports of the 3DO). The best IMO of the old school games is III but most would pick high stakes/road challenge but i've got a chip on my shoulder of road challenge.

I just tried RR64 yesterday and man does it feel weird to control. throwing yourself into a drift felt super unnatural compared to other ridge racers I've played, and it has this strange herky-jerky veering when you finally exit the drifting animation. I wanna give it some more chances but it sure did play strange.

I seriously have a problem with High Stakes specially on PC. Need For Speed is about driving it like I fucking stole it. But the entire game to me is slowing down for jumps because catching air kills my chassis and suspensions. Hitting signs dings your bill. those tracks return in high stakes; i personally prefer the newer tracks because of their more realistic design and appearance. obviously it's still not *really* realistic, but i think the colors used remind me a bit of film photography and evoke the same vibe as photos you'd see in late-90s road and tra- hey, wait a minute

No, no it is not. NFS 1 through to porsche are about driving (not racing, a subtle distinction) the bedroom poster. All those supercars you wanted in exotic locales but will never afford - that is what the games are styled after. This is why the games also offer a host of technical information and history - it is really aimed at the boy who has the poster and memorised all the specs.

The herp a derp racing set in with HP2 but at least from underground 1 they wore that intention openly.

NFSIII is my favourite NFS game of all time as it nails everything from the sound, the style and the gameplay. I find high stakes regresses in some areas as it is a blatant setup for porsche (which is considerably more serious) but falls into this weird mix of too serious for its own good but still trying to be arcadey - III gets this balance spot on.

I got into PC gaming way, way later than the 90's but these days the magic of dgvoodoo and dosbox lets me play the old titles I missed out on.

Speaking of PS1 racing - does anyone know if Circuit Breakers ever actually got that expansion? I have scoured the internet and supposedly it exist on one of the demo discs but i've never been able to source it or find confirmation. The #DO original plays more like a race simulator than the other versions that came later. I honestly never really spent much time with the PS1 port. I would imagine that it is pretty similar to the Saturn game. The Saturn version is sped-up. It's like EA tweaked it to play more like an arcade racer. The Saturn game runs at a fairly steady 30fps. It's a good port.

>> No.6761448

Thing is all the other versions other than the 3DO are just the same game - the platform differences are solely down to what each platform is capable of and the PC version is flatout the best. The saturn and PS1 versions are not inherently sped up, the 3DO just runs the game at 20fps and under most of the time. The only reason to play the 3DO is to see where it all started but beyond that it is just a footnote. NFS earned its reputation primarily within the PC space for a reason.

>The saturn and PS1 versions are not inherently sped up

That's not true at all. The cars in the Saturn version (and presumably PS1) all reach higher top speeds. It's not just a faster frame rate. And it does affect the way the cars handle in those versions, there's more under-steer in the Saturn/PS1 games overall. The acceleration of the vehicles in general are faster too. The breaking feels different. I honestly prefer the 3DO version because it does play more like a real driving sim in comparison to the other versions.

I'm going to take issue with these claims specifically. RR1 was the best you were gonna get as a arcade port at the time for a 3D game. RRR is a better game on just about every front (I dislike the OST compared to the original).

RR1 and Revolution aren't "lazy", they basically ported the arcade game with new physics to work better with a digital pad. Early 94-96 sequels were refinement driven to iron out the fugly graphics so that's why Revolution and even Wipeout XL still uses the old school arcadey non-progression models. In 97 and after you started to see more "career" modes and started cranking out actual content. Type 4 isn't lazy per se, but nearing '00 they really went mad in padding things out to milk every hour of playtime out of you. Again with Wipeout, in Wipeout 3 your "progression" is making you finish gold on every track using every ship on every speed class. Ridge Racer V is more of a tech demo as with RR1.

I am a bit disappointing that the bonus disc was never included with the PS1 mini. But then again, the emulation was trash in that machine. Ridge Racer Type 4 didn't even run at a proper framerate. It was awesome when publishers use to throw in free content like this.

At that point in time, Nintendo was trying to get some PS1 exclusives on the N64. They also funded the port of Resident Evil 2. Ridge Racer 64 was built from scratch by Nintendo Software Technology group in Redmond, Washington (Nintendo's own headquarters), and was meant to be a compilation of everything Ridge Racer. It has the courses from RR and RRR, and NST made one new course that was set in a desert. Ridge Racer 64 also has its own collision and drift system, but you can chose the RRR or Rage Racer styled gameplaty as well. The is pretty good in the N64 game. Well no shit, but the PC had genuine million sellers. Just because it didn't have as many million sellers compared to PS1 doesn't invalidate them as being "unpopular" or not "really popular".
>but back then PC was still niche
Niche in how dedicated players were to certain games. There were still big sellers on it that were popular. And again, popular enough to get ported to consoles even if the games weren't designed for consoles.
>no kid was asking for a PC
Nigger, if you had a computer capable of running the big PC titles at the time, you wanted whatever came out on it, just like how any kid with a PS1 or N64 wanted the hot new games for those systems.

Not going to lie friends, I may need some help.

I got The Need for Speed working on PC through DOSbox, but now that I'm trying to get NFS II: SE to work, I'm having a lot more difficulties it seems. Sometimes it'll get to the menus, sometimes it won't. Oftentimes it'll show the 3DFX logo, then go to black and stay that way. Regardless, there's no way for me to exit the application, I have to manually sign out using ctrl+alt+delete as it won't close no matter what I do.

I've tried everything I could think of, tried a lot of different ROMs and ISOs and configurations and patches.

Fuck knows as I went through a lot of internet trawling to get the game working. I even named the file "keep as it fucking works".

III and high stakes are much, much easier to get running. II falls into that weird void of very early Direct3D that just do not function anymore due to things 16bit reliance or general doing funky things modern windows does not handle. I think RG mechanics has a torrent of all the early NFS games floating about as well.

i'm no expert but let go of gas and then press gas or brake to initiate drift. in drift state, i think you need to turn a bit in any side (it doesn't matter) so then when you want to end the drift you need to straighten up again. pressing gas if it wasn't pressed might end the drift too i think. in drift state your rotation doesn't effect the position of the car, which gravitate to the center of the track pretty quickly, but i think it might affect speed loss, more angle - more loss. so the only reason to do any significant angle is to show off.

Let go of power, turn, hit power again. The real trick of RR's drifting is you aren't going to be applying countersteer during the drift. Once you start the drift the car will turn as if it is on rails at that angle so counter steer is only applied at the end to end up going straight again.

Pay close attention to this webm - you can see the slight drop in revs as the drift is initiated and it is full throttle all the time otherwise.

>> No.6767230

>>6767208
Its all about using only a few inputs. A tap or two to initiate the drift and you only need about that to straighten out. Where I think you are going wrong is the car is gripping when the viewpoint is still at an angle so you are applying either too much counter steer to straighten up or not enough. You might want to counter steer to straighten a little sooner than you currently are. Again there is no secret just practice. I suggest sticking with the F/A racing car as it really is the most balanced.

RR's drifting is very binary - the car is either sticking to the track like glue or is drifting, there is no inbetween state like you see in basically every other (non arcade) game. Burnout for example is the polar opposite - a drift can be manipulated easily and you can gradually change from drift to grip but as said ridge racer doesn't work like that.

Your list was pretty based until a few items.

>Dirt 3, Rush 2, Top Gear Overdrive
You're going to have to explain those ones to me.

Dirt felt like it continued to get more gimmicky and casual over time until their return to form with Dirt Rally, though I admittedly didn't play much of the series.

I've been playing Rush 2 and Top Gear Overdrive on N64. Neither feel fun to play longer than a few minutes, as much as I wanted them to be, I'm not sure how anyone can play them for long, unless I'm really missing something, which I could be.

How do you feel about Sega GT and Sega GT 2002?

Never even heard of Rock n Roll Racing. I've only played tiny bits of PGR, but if they're that high up I may need to buy an Xbox hueg. Also, based MSR placement.

Dirt 3 is the only one of the dirt games I’ve played and if you set the options to be more arcade like, it feels like a spiritual successor to sega rally, i put on damage though to make it a bit more fun. I hear dirt rally is very very sim like

Rush 2 is just a good solid arcade style racer that fixes most of the issues from 1. Top gear overdrive has a nice career style mode and almost felt like N64’s answer to ridge racer until 64 came out

I haven’t played much sega gt but i’m guessing they’re like forza or gt, which I should add forza 1 is great and I liked forza horizon 4

Rock and roll racing is top down and has a metal ost, it’s a ton of fun. PGR is my favorite racing series ever because it’s like ridge racer except it has real cars and the drifting and style driving actually matter, especially in the first game. MSR is actually PGR 0. If you like MSR, they’re essentially the same

It's very, VERY fun but there are things about it that I can't shake and diminishes it in the long run for me.

The biggest one being the AI doesn't ACTUALLY race you (like rubber-banding AI at least is actually driving against you, even if they're getting boosted or slowed depending on your performance; Burnout 3's opponents basically have fixed spots they will always appear at).

The boost system is based around plowing into things along the side of the road (which only count if they haven't been hit yet, meaning cars in front get fresher boosting opportunities) and battling rival cars, which is very odd, and the controls for the game are so loose and difficult to rein in that it runs counter to the boosting system (you either trip over debris or can barely hold onto your car when you go up against the other cars and it all descends into frustrating, nonsensical chaos).

I am, still dealing with the fallout. I know no one cares, but I just recently got settled back into the board after not posting for years, and was getting cozy in this thread, then they immediately changed the rules the next day.

Oh well, I guess as someone said, all that does is increase the number of racing games to talk about, even if that now includes some I couldn't possibly care about, but I'll quit whining now.

I'm down to talk about whatever, though I originally came to talk about Cruis'n, but it's looking like that probably won't be a thing anymore.

Fucking this. I remember being around when Sega GT came out and I was so hyped for it, especially when it was a game you could play in arcades. I felt like it had a ridiculous amount of potential, and fully expected it to be a longstanding franchise.

Despondent anon here, HALE yeah. Fucking love World and Exotica. Most people tend to favor USA because it was the most well known/widely exposed, on top of being the first in the series, but I personally find World and Exotica more appealing overall and expand and improve on the formula, especially when it comes to locales/track variety, and car roster variety. I have USA and Exotica on N64 and looking to get World. I hear World is the best 64 port of the trilogy. USA does indeed just feel like a 3D OutRun, which isn't bad in of itself, but there's a lot of repetition there and a relatively lacking sense of speed compared to World and Exotica, though I don't think the arcade is bad by any means. Though the 64 version is pretty sad by comparison. I hear MAME can now emulate USA and World, but not Exotica yet, which is the one I've been waiting on the most.
