Is this game fun? I've never played through an RPG, I mostly enjoy arcade type games (shmups, fighters, jog and jabbers, puzzle, run n gun) but I love some of the mech designs, and of course the waifus.

It was really disappointing because the tactical rpg phases are extremely easy. The rest is nice.

>I've never played through an RPG

I'm half-way through Soul Hackers and I'm reminded why I like retro jrpgs so much.

The battle system is simple to get into but flexible enough to offer some mechanical depth, the story is very good and well written with continuous momentum pushing forward with some fun surprises thrown in (so far it has never dwindled or felt like filler). The characters are likable, have distinct personalities and their voice-work is exceptional (Nemissa is charming and it's funny to watch her possess Hitomi since the two are very different); the art style has a 90's cyber-goth atmosphere thanks to Kazuma Kaneko's wonderful work, the music is also on point varying between soothing jazz beats to haunting electronic tracks, and the graphics are pretty nice for a saturn-era 3DS port. I only wish they updated the sprites a bit to take advantage of the 3DS hardware, I know it's not going to happen but a proper modern remake/port with high quality production would've been amazing, oh well, at least Atlus decided to make this port.

I'm playing it on hard and while it's not that challenging it's surprising to see some bosses and random encounters hit like trucks and wipe out my party with some crazy combos, this has happened quite a few times and it still makes me go "WTF?!".
A tip I'd give is that grinding levels' isn't as important as magnetite management and conservation. Don't walk around with summoned demons, only use them when necessary. I never really felt the need to grind in jrpgs though, but conserving magnetite in this game is a big part of playing efficiently, since summoning and even moving around dungeons causes your demons to consume it.

But other than that, it's great. It's probably the second best SMT jrpg I've played.

It is a mediocre at best game. It is the Saturn's equivalent to Shenmue: Sega overspending to produce a sub-par home video game that cannot decide what kind of game it wants to be. The best feature are character designs by Fujishima Kosuke who saved his best work in character designs for the Namco Tales series but shat out some basic bitches. Its story/scenario was written by Akahori Satoru who's stories all are like "1 guy 3 girls" but when Sega hired him on they asked for his best work and he responded "1 guy 5 girls" for the game and when asked to up his game for the sequel he responded "1 guy 7 girls" thus Sega exclaimed "brilliant!" then proceeded to throw a bunch of money at him. Sakura Taisen is not an RPG, so you are safe there, but if you want to play a SRPG, it does that pretty poorly and I'd suggest you look into Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, Disgaea, or Vandal Hearts instead. The dating game is pretty poor as well and you'd be better served playing Mitsumete Knight instead. If you are after a good story in a video game, you won't find it here either, maybe try something from modern consoles. The Saturn is one of my favorite consoles, but games like the Sakura Taisen series gives the many Sega haters on this board fuel, but that doesn't bother me as it is the Japanese equivalent to Madden games in the US: taking up all the junk/clearance bins in secondhand stores.

Saying its bad doesn't hurt him though. You're better off pretending its good and making OP waste his time. lrn2troll

In that case you should post your replays before continuing.

When will people stop describing Sakura Wars as a srpg

Awesome presentation, poor execution. The vn phases are way too big, the t-rpg sections too short and way too easy.
If you're into vns and/or are in for the waifus, you'll love it. If you're a t-rpg lover, you'll be disappointed.
In the same vein, I had more fun with Lakers III. Almost as easy, but with a way better pace. And boobs.

Not trying to troll, just answering OP's question.
