alright, I'll do a script translation for 20 yen per character. that means if there are 500 text boxes with 20 characters average it will cost you 200,000 jpy or about 2000 usd.
if you want to pay for editing and romhacking on top of that go for it, if the script has to be compressed due to technical restrictions afterwards it's not my problem, it's a low-ish rate for j->e translation.

It's not a slur, though it is old-fashioned and mostly only used as a porn category these days
I think "tranny" is too strongly insulting compared to newhalf so I'd go with one of these:
1) transsexual -- sounds appropriately old-fashioned
2) shemale -- to go with the "it's used that way in porn" angle
3) newhalf -- screw it, make 'em look it up on the internet

This is the sole reason for all the autistic screeching in the thread. Things that get a "good enough" translation often never get anyone else bothering to improve on it later. Pretty sure those are controversial.
That thing is often framed as a "localization vs. literal translation" argument when actually it's "incompetent rewritten script that turns characters into caricatures vs. incompetent dry script that erases personalities". It's especially common in retro games due to lack of space to convey the original script in English appropriately, but it happens a lot in modern translations too.

When I think of a shitty translation that gets almost universal praise I think of Gyakuten Saiban/Ace Attorney, the characters are completely gutted in English in many cases, and replaying it in Japanese after learning it made me realize how much was lost in translation, an easy example being Mayoi/Maya being the surrogate "how's that kanji read" character while in English those bits make her seem retarded or an excuse to add a forced tutorial.

Still, there are things I believe it's almost impossible to translate, like accents from a region in Japan that the person translating has no idea of how to "localized" it. Making a character in rural Japan speaks with a Texan accent just to show he speaks different from the rest is shit.

The meaning of "ぬしNushi" is not "king".In Japanese, [Nushi] means a special creature living in the rivers and mountains that is different in size and color. It is the creature that stands at the top of the place, which is rarely seen and we don't even know if it really exists.

I'm a Japanese who just happened to see it.I've also played the sequel to this game on the PC engine.

The reason is because each of the four character goes out to fish a river nushi, for each of them the fish is a different one(one of the is even a catfish namazu: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namazu).). Though only one is called "nushi no something" when you catch it, all of the characters has their own specific fish is described as "kawa no nushi" during the intro.

CAN WE MAKE A 4KIDZ VERSION AFTER YOU GUYS ARE DONE PROPERLY TRANSLATING IT?

>> No.6770435

Guys, aspiring translators, just a quick reminder that context is pretty important.

For example,
> $2CAE8 イワナは元気良く泳いでいった。
is currently (in the spreadsheet) translated as:
> FSH is cheerfully swimming.
and that is a translation I might in fact make too, if I had no further context.

But! In-game, that message is displayed when you have the fish hauled up from the water but it breaks out of the hook. So it's actually completely wrong. Something approaching a correct translation would be:
> FSH broke off and swam away!

With that in mind, please, have some playthroughs of the game so you can translate in context:

There's actually a small error in the translation. Whoever translated it must have read 泳いでいった "went off swimming" as 泳いでいた "was swimming". That accounts for half of the change in the sentence desu.

This should be noted, good call. In the end however, once we get some context clues and see the translated string, even if it's shitty, it shouldn't be too hard to reword it to fit better.

Yes. The google sheet has a "translation" and "better translation", so if anything is missing a context, we can fix it. It's always better to assume the "translation" column is almost literal(or in some cases quite literal), so one can fix it later by taking in consideration the context. Mostly because I assume many of those are specific to some point in the game that you are not going to get it if you don't see it. Good thing this guy posted some playthroughs: >>6770435

I certify that the
Fishermen's Association

The Fishermen's Union translation is incorrect.

The statement shows that
It's probably an association run by the fishes, and it's content to honor the players.
It's not a fishermen's association, it's an association made by fish.

It's an association of fishes.

It depends on how people want to take things forward. For example the Goemon games were always "Mystical Ninja Goemon" or something of the sort. The recent patches all went with "Go for it Goemon" which is more of a literal translation. So while this could keep as "The Legend of The River King" might as well go for something else like "Fishing the River King 2".

An addendum about nushi.
For example, suppose we, Japanese, see an outstandingly large boar deep in the mountains. The person who sees it is a nushi guarding this mountain! We think thatThe same is true when we place it on other animals.

There is a saying in Japan that there are eight million gods, and animals have gods too.

Guardian is perhaps the closest expression to nushi.

Even a domesticated cat becomes a nekomata after about 20 years.
Even tools can become nekomata after a hundred years of use.
Although there are few people who believe in it anymore ^ ^

Found the data now – there's 73 entries in a long list at 0x28018, 23 bytes per entry.
In these 23 bytes there's stuff like pointer to fish name data, pointer to description data, which image to use, probably the stats too, shown on the left to the image in your pic.

I don't think there's 73 unique fish in the game though so maybe there's other stuff here too, but can't say for sure yet. I'll start extracting these as soon as I figure out the bytes
